Mick McCarthy happy with debutants

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today singled out two stars of the future in full-backs Matt Doherty and Jamie Reckord – as Sam Vokes looked to rejoin the club’s Premier League party.

Full-backs Doherty and Reckord, both 19, played starring roles in last night’s 4-0 Carling Cup second round win at Northampton.

Republic of Ireland under-19 international Doherty, a bargain £70,000 signing from Bohemians 13 months ago, set up the goal of the night scored by Vokes.

Wolverhampton-born left-back Reckord, an England under-16 and under-17 international, was making his Wolves debut against at the club he made his senior bow for, on loan last season.

And McCarthy was delighted with his two teenage full-backs, who only got their chance because Ronald Zubar withdrew with a minor groin injury.

The manager said: “They were as good as anybody on the pitch and they are two good full-backs.

“I’m so surprised no-one has asked to take Matt on loan already, because he’s been outstanding in our reserve team.

“Jamie was at Northampton last season but it didn’t really happen for him. He was playing alongside some good players last night and he was excellent.

“I am not only thrilled for them, but really encouraged by their performances.”

Vokes’ goal last night was his first Wolves strike since 10 April 2009 against Southampton in the Championship.

But, with Stefan Maierhofer’s £1million sale to Red Bull Salzburg sealed last night and Andy Keogh on loan at Leeds until January, the 21-year-old Wales international believes he can grab his chance.

He said: “We’ve seen two lads go so, hopefully, that will give me more chances.

“I want to prove I can do a job. We’ve started the season really well and this is where I want to be.”
