Wolves boss on his bike for charity
Tuesday 23rd August 2011, 9:09AM BST.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is getting on his bike to help raise £10,000 for charity.
On Thursday, the Molineux boss will cycle a half-marathon being run by club mentors Mike Wood, 52, and former Manchester City and Sunderland midfielder Jeff Whitley, 36.
The 13.1 mile course, which will take in the Staffordshire Railway Walk which runs near the club’s Compton training ground, is one of 10 half-marathons in 10 days run by Wood and Whitley, while Express & Star Wolves correspondent Tim Nash will join them on Thursday’s leg.
The mentors started the gruelling feat yesterday and have completed the first two attempts in just under one hour and 55 minutes for each.
McCarthy said: “Mike is an old pal of mine from my Manchester City days and is always coming up with challenges.
“This is a big one but he’s got a big heart and deserves all the support he can get with this.”
The duo, who spent a day a week at Compton speaking to players about the dangers of addiction, will have a three-day break after the 10 half-marathons before doing the Wolverhampton Marathon.
Wood said: “The target is to run all the half-marathons in under two hours and the marathon in under four.
“We’re trying to raise £10,000 for various charities around Wolverhampton and couple in Stockport.”
As well as cycling the route, McCarthy will also give generously.
Wood added: “We’ve already had quite a bit of commitment from the people here and there’s a suspicion that it will be a rather nice contribution from the manager.”
The pair have had help from Wolves’ chief scout Dave Bowman, who supplied their Nike footwear, and first-team yoga instructor Chris Taylor giving them free workouts.
They will also be running in Wolves’ kit, so fans can give them a shout en route.
