All change for Wolves in Carling Cup

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has all but ruled out any more signings – and revealed plans to change his entire team for the Carling Cup trip to Northampton.

Stefan Maierhofer’s £1million move to Red Bull Salzburg will be the 14th departure of the summer, but the striker will not be replaced.

And, despite being linked with Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard and Fulham full-back Chris Baird, McCarthy revealed any more incomings are unlikely.

He said: “I don’t see anything happening. It’s very doubtful. I said that before but left it open, because you don’t know what might happen and that’s still the case.

“We were a bit light in midfield with Adlene Guedioura having had an ankle operation, and David Edwards struggling with his back, but he’s back in training now.

“Dave’s looking like he’s going to be playing shortly but tonight is too soon. But he trained with the first team yesterday and Sam Vokes is involved tonight.”

Vokes is a likely starter alongside Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in attack, with all of the shadow squad who have been on the bench so far. Youngsters Anthony Forde and Leigh Griffiths are also travelling.

McCarthy, who is aiming for his 100th Wolves win tonight on the club’s first competitive visit to Sixfields, insists he is not being disrespectful to their League Two opponents, who beat Liverpool in last year’s competition.

He added: “If Northampton play above themselves and are more motivated than us, they could win.”
