Jez Moxey in warning over Wolves sales

Chief executive Jez Moxey today admitted Wolves may still shed more players – despite preparing to lose their 12th this summer.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s six-figure sale to Peterborough and the loan of Carl Ikeme to Middlesbrough – both expected to be sealed this weekend – will take the number of departures from Molineux to 12 since May.

Mendez-Laing’s sale is the sixth permanent exit with Marcus Hahnemann, David Jones, Greg Halford, Nathan Rooney and Johnny Dunleavy, while the loans of Michael Mancienne and Geoffrey Mujangi Bia expired.

In addition to Ikeme, Steven Mouyokolo, Danny Batth and Scott Malone have already departed on long-term loans.

The club are still keen to offload Stefan Maierhofer, Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes while trying to bring in at least another signing.

Just three players – Jamie O’Hara, Dorus De Vries and Roger Johnson – have come in and Moxey admitted he “doubts” whether they will make a major splash again in this transfer window.

But Moxey stressed the process was all about making the squad leaner and giving fringe players a chance elsewhere.

Great to see the new stand taking shape. Agree with Moxley that we need to move on several of the fringe players but I hope that it’s a smokescreen about no more signings. I still feel that if we could get Dann in to parner Johnson and also Ridgewell for knock down prices from bankrupt B’ham, Hilts on a freebee and a couple of loans then that would give the club the strength in depth to comfortably take us to mid-table without the nail-biting finish to last season or constantly looking over our shoulders.

Why don’t we bat Keogh and Vokes to Brum?

They have not a got team to put out.

If albion can get rid of Carson for a price we can get rid of our weaker players.

The starting line up V Blackburn is basically the same team as last apart from Johnson for Mancinne and berra for Craddock.

    Thats a depressing thought

A major splash would be nice but realistically a decent amount spent on a left back would be most appreciated – and deperately needed!
Reducing the numbers is necessary at all times not just now so no surprise about that news but then transfer fees for those players need to be of interest to other clubs otherwise the likes of Keogh and Vokes will forever remain on the books and as they will figure very little, that is purely a waste of valuable finances.

I certainly hope the club stick to their promise, players out, then players in. As for Maierhofer, Keogh and Vokes, I think there is little chance of clubs matching anywhere near our vaulation, so at the end of the day it could be a case of accepting a more nominal fee or worst case scenario, cancelling their contracts.

So can anyone please explain if the O’Hara and Johnson deals that we paid out was far less than the reported 7 and 5 million and the 12 players that have left the club. Why do we still need to offload before we can bring in any new players. surely we have money still set aside for transfers.
Is the pot empty the 3ms have done a great job in running the club i would never want this club to overspend and go in the same direction as the blues. but if they think we can cope in this league and finish mid table with the defence we have then they and anyone else will be in for a huge shock.
we need a L/B that has to be our priority before the start of the season then we can kick on.

Complacent is the word, very few takers for the poor players Moxey needs to get the money back from.

Hope they do sell Ward, Henry and Berra, maybe able to by a LB.

George & Stearman could make it with the right training and tactics, however we haven’t got a coach capable of doing that.

A quick look at the list above suggests a lot more deadwood on the books than was easily apparent. Even so, the wage bill last year in terms of % of turnover didn’t suggest wages were a problem, so that still leaves it a bit of a mystery (for me at least) as to why the purse strings are quite so tightly stretched at present. A long look at the books next time out might be interesting.

Whatever, Johnson seems sure the squad is a strong one, MM seems content, the other two M’s are seemingly sanguine, so let’s get ready to enjoy the party they feel sure they have fully prepared. Blackburn start quaking in your boots!

We do need to reduce the numbers and start having more quality than quantity.
We must sign a “LEFT BACK” this is imperative to our season. We continue to display the same issues as last season in defence.Berra,Stears and Elokobi must start to show a consistent level of calmness! These players can do a good job for the club. They have to cut out the “mistakes” the silly “numpties”!!

you can always see the weak areas in your team by thinking about who would be bought if the current squad was put up for sale. The like’s of doyle,o’hara, fletcher, jarvis etc would go somewhere else in the prem. I’m sure our current LB would still be here so we need to improve there. So would Ward and Henry….if they went,it would be down a league…..or to a promoted side. Im not anti ward and henry…the lads can do a ‘shift’ and sometimes rolling up your sleeves is whats required..but wolves are trying to get stronger and they are now backup players at best…these sort of players will keep us near to the relegation zone if they play too many times next season. Lets hope for a couple of more new faces. Good luck the lads for the new season

Why are there people like you who seem to think that O’Hara is not a new signing ? He was on LOAN from January. Remember ?
We now have O’Hara for the whole season as well as Stephen Hunt and Adlene Guediora. In case you didn’t notice, rather like last season, there are points available between August and December.
We have also signed a new goalkeeper to replace USA. He had 25 shut outs in the Championship last season and as we know first hand, after many seasons stuck down there, that’s impressive.
Now, along with Roger Johnson I make that five ‘new’ players we are starting the new season with (you could add Fletcher to that after his unfortunate start 12 months ago). Plus another one or two still to come in. We all know that the board and management don’t broadcast their transfer activities. Stop getting wound up by the media
Finally, It was Sir Jack who (quote) “let Dave Jones down” not Steve Morgan. I think we all understood his Golden Tit outburst after a series of managers wasted his money. (I leave out those idiots who verbally abused and spat at him)

Essentially all this amounts to is some seasonal pruning.

The players named that have left permanently would not have figured in any significant way this season.

The ones going out on loan may improve and ultimately be of greater value on their return. Possibly good enough to be considered for the first team.

That just leaves Maierhofer, Keogh and Vokes to move on. I’ll be surprised if they are still with Wolves come the end of August.

I agree completely with Post 15 Arnie. If we are to avoid another season of struggle in the bottom three we need an accomplished natural left back not some makeshift excuse for one. Elokobi simply isn’t good enough. Likewise Karl Henry would not be a regular in any other Premiership side, nor Wardy, although they all have plenty of heart. This is the prem after all and heart and a shift is NOT ENOUGH. If our club runs itself financially very well, then let’s see that reflected by playing to our strengths and not our weaknesses on the pitch.

We just don’t have enough quality especially when we get injuries.
It appears that leicester had more appeal for several of our targets than playing for Wolves in the Premiership.
I cannot understand why Danny Batth has never been given more of a chance, just like Elliot Bennett who is now at Norwich.
Who would want to give Mick McCarthy more money to spend just look at some of his signing and the money he has wasted over the last few seasons, most of them we would have to sell on at at loss.
Teams like Manchester City can afford to do that, but we should invest in quality players that will improve the team to help us to stay in the Premiership.

Moxey is talking as if we’ve spent £30 million or something. Let’s not forget we’ve bought in two players for a combined transfer fee equal to that of one player (Steven fletcher) a year ago. Surely to god funds should be made available for a left back and another centre half! Moxey himself said these were needed soon after last season ended, so why go back on your word? If Stearman goes, which shouldn’t be for less than £2 million as he has more Prem experience than Matt Mills we will have to bring in another centre half as we’ve already let Moyokolo go on a silly season long loan.

In other words, I’m pleased with who we’ve bought in so far but without further defensive improvements we are looking at another season of struggle.

I think most Wolves people believe we are close to having a team that is capable of ‘fully’ establishing itself as a Premiership club – the likes of the Evertonians and Villa. Being close is IMO two good player purchases away and perhaps the odd loanee. Shipping 12 out does not automatically mean we save all the money on wages for them but surely the signal being given is that we haven’t finished our transfer dealings just yet.

Bit surprised with how Wolves have treated the young Sam Vokes TBH. Even fans deem him surplus to the squad. The boy use to score for fun down in Bouremouth – lower league yes, but most goal scorers don’t lose their natural ability. The boy is still very young.

Getting rid of Keogh, Maihoffer would be a good call – Mendez Laing is going. Why? Another Academy product shown the door – still can’t believe they have allowed Danny Batth go the Owls on loan, our best Academy defender since Joleon Lescott. I think Danny would be brilliant alongside Roger Johnson – talking of RJ – is it true he is now the team captain as some reports suggest, I haven’t seen anything official from the club & Karl seems to have taken it really well if true.

I keep seeing mentions on here about young Zeli – yet he never seems to be in Wolves squads. Is this kid going to make it or will he fall by the wayside like Mark Davies did for some other club Notlob to benefit from our Academy!

I like others would still like to see a LB & CB bought in as I think Berra will wrestle & shirt pull too much & get penalised! We should have enough players to interest Birmingham so we can deal for Scott Dann & Ridgewell if the latter doesn’t go to the Baggies.

He & Mick are constantly looking at ways to improve the playing squad.
If a good deal for the club can be done, the club will try to make it happen.
We do not have a sell to buy policy at the club.

Just to let you know I have never said that Stephen Ward is an outstanding left back. He has however played Left Back regularly in the Premiership and is now an International footballer, also playing left back.

The only reason the club would sign a left back is on the basis that the one we sign is better than the ones we already have?

I would be ‘chuffed to bits’ if we sign a top quality left back – that being an established Premiership and International player (like Ward and Elokobi).

What I fiercly object too are the Numpties that feel it necessary to ‘Slag Off’ our players regardless of the 100% total commitment they have given to this club.

Yes there are clearly better players available in all positions but Wolves clearly can’t afford them without putting the club into financial meltdown.

The new stand is a well thought out part of the overall development of the club to make Wolves a sustainable premiership outfit, but once again some Numpties think this plan is wrong.

In fact some Numpties slag off everything that the Wolves (3Ms) do and say – these Numpties are not supporters they are at best followers and they need to do us all a favour and go away taking their negativity with them!

Sir Billy, I do not slag off our players, but I do question our priorities re the ground development. It will be good to have better stands of course it will, but they have to be paid for.The £15m for the North Bank will have come from profits made in the last two seasons or half of the £30 million, via Sir Jack’s deal. This money could have been spent on improving thr team.It is a question of priorities. It is phase 2 and 3 of the ground development, where the financial squeeze will start to bite.An extra £30/40 million that must be found from profits or by taking out a big mortgage. To add to that we must now pay something to finance the new training ground. It should be obvious to everybody that this will put a strain on team development.I think Sir Jack’s Molineux and training facilities were perfectly adequate, and we should have concentrated 100% on building the team.

Wolfhedd. Think frobo and harrywolf have a point. The playesr you mention are all uk based and no scouting was really needed. Henrys no good, ebanks blake is not really prem class, kightly yet to prove his prem worth so thats just Jarvis that ticks the boxes.
Think what theyre on about is molumbu from Paris st Germain for 300K, odemwingie from russis for 1.5m and tchoyi from god knows where for 1.0m. We wulfies have to admit thats an envious bit of business.
When we try our luck abroad we get van Damme and the hoff, our scouts on the continent need to be removed from their posts!

gresham, good point. But lets not praise that lot too much, even it does baffle me how they get all these good foreign players before anyone else at next to nothing.
Wolfhedd, please don`t mention `talented scouts` and `karl Henry` in the same sentence.

    WHO R wba anyway???????

Gresham. You have hit the nail firmly on the head when you say “try our luck”. Wolves scouting system has been pot luck/use a pin since the three M’s got involved. Can anyone out there name a Wolves player of the likes of Tigywinkie and Umpalumpo that has come through the scouting process?
I include the likes of Kightly et al in that scenario.

gresham wanderer – I would prefer our targets to money grabbing foreign mercinaires any day of the week. How many of their players are going to want to stay should they get relegated, or should a bigger club come along.

As for suggestng Jarvis is the only player in the list that ticks all the boxes. Blake had a decent scoring record last season, and is easily a better player than Cox who was on the list of baggies players. Kightly may not have proven himself yet, but £25k for a fantastic championship player is still top class business. Henry may or may not be very good, (The england management seemd to disagree) But 2 consecutive seasons in the prem is more than any of those players in the baggies list have managed.

I agree that we could be looking further away and picking up some fantastic players, my point is, were not exactly doing bad with our transfers at them moment and contrary to what many people choose to believe, there isnt a team in the prem that doesnt make the ocasional bad transfer and that doesnt have any dead wood in their squad. I suppose we will see how well albions bargain players do soon enough based on whether they can avoid second season syndrome. But i cant see them having as easy a time as many people beleive.

Where is the other centre back that we were supposed to be after and of course a left back.Moxey, why don`t you come clean and admit leading the fans on about purchases and say that you have no intentions in that direction, better still why don`t you go back to Stoke once and for all.Mick why don`t you try being a manager and telling the idiot that you need at least two players as described above,in fact don`t tell him demand.Moxey hasn`t got a clue on the football side so educate him .

Wolhedd. Stop going on about the Albion, their lot must be loving it. Mind you woudnt call anyone who signs for Jeremy peace a mercenary, bit of a contradiction as they pay practically the lowest wage in the prem and to be fair to molumbu he has just signed a new deal.
Fact is we do need some quality and I’m sure there will be one more signing

Those within the game know how difficult the transition is when attempting to compete with the levels of fitness, speed, strength and skill within the EPL. We have so far survived by more luck than judgement, whilst at the same time building up the attributes which individuals need to stay ‘In There’. It is so important to gain those improvements.

Why then are we sending a very promising central defender Batth to a Division ONE club, the Championship would not be good enough for his development whilst belonging to a PL team, so why on earth send him to the Basement ?

He should be at Compton training with the first squad, with outings in cup games. The net result of this stupidity is that upon his return he will be out of his depth, probably told he is not going to make it and sold on the cheap. Yet more youth investment wasted and talent abused by people who know no better. All for the sake of a few shillings saved by Scrooge Moxey and the old pals act between managers, how utterly sad and with little or no regard for the lad’s future.

Crockett48 – I’m going to take a stab in the dark at this one and assume you’re not involved at any level, with the coaching of Wolves players, be it senior or youth. You, like the rest of us fans, therefore don’t actually have the slightest idea just how good Batth actually is. You say he should stay put & play in cup games. The chances are in the early rounds we’ll get drawn with lower league clubs anyway. He’ll benefit more playing regular league one football than just training day in day out at Wolves with just getting a few cup games against League one clubs under his belt.

If he is good enough, he will crack the Premier League regardless of playing League 1 or Championship football this season. It didn’t seem to hold Beckham’s career back that he spent a loan spell at Preston, or Tom Cleverley at Leicester then Watford, Chris Smalling made the jump from non-league Maidstone to Premier League Fulham in one year….. if Batth is goog enough, he will make it.
