Stearman wants to stay at Wolves

Wolves defender Richard Stearman today brushed off speculation about his future – as Carl Ikeme was primed for a move to Middlesbrough.

Stearman has been linked with a £1million move to tomorrow’s friendly opponents Ipswich in the last two days.

But the versatile stopper, who signed a contract extension to 2014 in January, wants to stay.

The 23-year-old said: “It’s going to be a big fight for the shirts at the start of the season and, indeed, throughout the campaign.

“We’ve got great strength in depth there now which can only drive us all on to perform better and try to get in the team.

“Hopefully, I can perform well and manage to take one of those shirts.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ikeme has been given permission to play for Middlesbrough in tonight’s glamour friendly with PSV Eindhoven, with a view to a loan deal.

Ikeme, who had featured in all of Wolves’ pre-season fixtures before Tuesday’s win at Celtic, will join Boro’ on loan on Monday, providing Wayne Hennessey and Dorus De Vries come through tomorrow’s friendly.

De Vries suffered a slight groin injury in training shortly after signing but, so far, has featured in two development fixtures with Shrewsbury and Wrexham.

The Dutchman travelled to Celtic for Wednesday’s friendly but was an unused substitute, as Hennessey played the full 90 minutes.

Can’t see Stearman leaving, certainly not for £1 mil.

Surely pure speculation, he’s a valuable member of an established premier league squad.

    Please sell him.
All he does is fall over.
When there is a ball or pass to be blocked, he falls over.
When there is a shot coming in, he falls over.
When there is any sort of tackle to be made, he falls over.

I’m sick of losing my voice each week because of shouting at the guy.

I forget sometimes how young some of our players still are. At 23, he has 2 years top flight football under his belt and still has time to improve further. £1million for him was never going to happen anyway if Mills is moving on for around £4million – £5million.

Stearman is a bit of an enigma. Clearly talented but rather inconsistant. However, he is only 23 and still has the potential to become a top class defender. On balance I think he is worth keeping for another year and re-evaluate his form at the end of next season

It could be that he would perform better with Johnson alongside him, although I have the feeling that Berra will initially be the preferred choice at the start of the new campaign. That is assuming we do not sign another central defender.

Perhaps a short loan spell with a championship side rather than a transfer would be the best option.

Ikeme’s loan deal makes perfect sense.

I’m a big supporter of MM but Stearman has been really mistreated since joining Wolves. His development as a young CB has been ruined by being played in half a dozen positions! God I remember Neil Collins playing at CB and Stearman being shipped to fullback. Give the guy a chance, I really rate him!

I hope this is nothing more than idle gossip, cos 1 million for a 23 year old England u21 (former) international with 2 years premier league experience on a long term contract sounds terrible business for us, and we are really overloaded with quality defenders at the minute??? That does not sound like the work of a great board, unless the chuckle brothers are in charge!!!

I think Stearman is a good squad player as he can play full back and centre back, however, he’s not first choice as he still makes mistakes.

I think he will eventually become a very good player and to think he is only worth £1M i a joke, I remember him being linked to L’pool in our first season and he’s improved since then.

I’d still like another CB to come in and if we can get Ridgwell for £2M then that would be a steal as he can also play left back.

It’s worrying to think if Johnson was to get injured we have in no way improved our defence which has been woeful in the premiership.

I still think we need a CB, LB, CM and ideally a ST permanent or loan deals!

I don’t think the fans will have to patience this time around if we are in the bottom three again for the majority of the season, in what is our third premiership campaign.

Its Stearmans ability which always exposes Berra. Stearman occasionally gets plaudits for being quick and making last gasp tackles, but its usually because he is out of position trying to recover and has to attempt the spectacular. Berra is often criticised for being slow but he generally has another 10 yeards to run than he should do as he’s covering Stearman. How many times have you seen stearman get the wrong side of his man from a simple long ball. However….. I think its worth keeping him as Johnson may be able to knock this out of him. He has the raw attributes, but just not the ability to perform consistently.

Selling Stearman makes no sense at all. People stating ‘I’ll drive him there myself’ are clearly lacking in any sort of long term vision. Here is a talented albeit raw 23year old defender who is still learning his trade. Wolverhampton born, he gives his all to the club and will only get better given time and patience. Yes, he has had his moments, like everyone else in the team has. But he’s part of the Wolves long term plan, even if he’s still a rookie. We’re not going to be able to go out and replace him either if he does go. No doubt these folks giving it large regarding RS are the self same folks who berate McCarthy week in week out, and boo Elokobi, etc. Tiresome, witless supporters who make the club look silly week in week out. Another home-grown talent who people seem to enjoy slagging off. What benefit would it be to the Club to sell a 23 year old with 2 years PL experience for £1 million.

Personally, I think Stearman is inconsistent, but let’s remember he is 23 years of age. How many teams in the PL have a 23 year old (or younger) playing week in-week out at centre-half? Defenders don’t tend to come into their prime until their late twenties at the earliest (look at Craddock!). Once he adds a bit of consistency to his game he will be a decent PL defender. I remember some outstanding performances from him last season; Liverpool at Anfield, Chelsea at home when he partnered Elokobi at centre-half I think. I also remember some horror shows from him, but he’s certainly not one I’d be rushing to get rid of.

RichWolf – get rid of Edwards, Foley, Henry, Ward too? That’s pretty much the nucleus of our squad which has kept us up for the last 2 years. I think if Dave Edwards can keep himself fit this could be a big season for him.

IMHO I hope we have another marquee signing to come, at least in the form of a loan deal for a Karl Henry type player. Or to paint the picture a modern day Bryan Robson in the making. We have terriers, we need An Alsatian in the midfield pack.

Are you implying Bob Hazel and George Berry are the worst defenders Wolves have had ?
I think you might find there will be quite a few proper Wolves fans who will disagree with that.
Yes, really embarrassing, you can’t even spell Stearman’s name correctly.

However you haven’t made the most brainless post on this thread.
That honour goes to 19 Poorthorns. Come on mastermind, putting Wardy to one side for a moment, explain to us all why Mick McCarthy is the worst manager ever. Even the Tescos are laughing at you.

Bob Hazel and George Berry the worst defenders ? Why don’t you include Billy Wright, Bill Slater, David Woodfield, Frank Munro, John McAlle, Dean Richards and Joleon Lescott.
I sometimes wonder why some of you lot support Wolves. Maybe you don’t

Anyone having a go at Rob hindmarch has a) no respect rip and b) was not at the hawthorns for his totally undeserved equalizer in 90. One of the great moments. Also can I check – did we stay up? Have we improved the squad? If yes to both, then why am I still drowning in a sea of negativity?

Stearman is a liability.Too many costly mistakes in his game.Never gonna be good enough to play consistently at this level.

Worse defender for the Wolves Agree with the guy who said Joe Gallagher from Blues He came down here a season before and they beat us 0-1 and headed bricks and run the show.We bought him after and he was absolute dire also his m8 Kevin Ashley another blue nose never done it for us. But my worst has to be Derek Jefferson from Ipswich Great for the town but he came here and Bi Heaven contact lenses and all he was Awfull

We cant and we wont sell “STEARMAN”.He is a player tha as to be given the chance.Has he as gained ample experience wich as to have improved him for the season coming. My only advice to him would Stears being calm cool and collective, start using what is in your head. You will be fine.

Of course Stearman will be staying as has rightly been said at only 23 years old he has his best to come.
Also if he were to be sold it would have to be at least 3 times the £1M mentioned.

I think poster number #8 best sums up the situation….

No 19.. No1 you must be a young wolves fan because, I myself am no lover of Mick, but he quite clearly isn’t the worse manager we have had! No2 again although I do not like ward myself I think Michael mancieene beats him to the award of the worse ever, and Keith Andrews isn’t far behind either. No3 did you copy my name because you liked it so much :) thanks mate I’m flatered. Hugh boost for my ego!!!! FWAW

One per season the top players, not every week.
When you watch, you know Steerman has a mistake in him, and will cost.
    You need to lighten up.

85 Poorthorns. No wonder people are trying to copy your name just to bask in the glory of your football wisdom. Mancienne and Andrews Wolves worst players ? You obviously didn’t watch Wolves though the eighties !
When you’ve been on the pop I should keep away from the computer.

Barnes 1959 – putting aside the fact that even top class defenders like Vidic or Terry will make more than one mistake a season……. how do you suppose we go about raising the £30-£40million transfer fee and £100k+ a week in salary we would need ? How much did Chelsea spend of David Luiz ? and he was making at least one mistake a game towards the end of last season.

I little reality wouldn’t do you any harm my friend.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
