Wolves unlikely to sign more players

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy today admitted it was “unlikely” the club would make any more signings before the big Premier League kick-off.

McCarthy, who must move players out before bringing anyone in, has had his phone glued to his ear this week trying to wheel and deal, with a midfielder top of his wishlist.

But the manager has seen Liverpool’s Jay Spearing pledge to fight for his place at Anfield, while Michael Johnson is poised to rejoin his former Manchester City boss Sven Goran-Eriksson at ambitious Leicester.

Asked if he was expecting more new faces before the start of the season, McCarthy said: “It’s unlikely, unless we can find a gem from somewhere who’s good with both feet, who can head it, who’s quick and who doesn’t cost anything! We don’t know, but we’ll keep looking.

“There’s still quite a lot of time to go in the window actually and who’s to say there might be someone leave and someone else come in?”

McCarthy insisted none of the ‘family silver’ will be sold, although Richard Stearman was today linked with a move to Saturday’s opponents Ipswich.

The Wolves boss said: “It won’t be Matt Jarvis, Kevin Doyle or Steven Fletcher. But something might happen. I’m not expecting it, but it could.”

u would hope that before the transfer window closes that we would get someone else in. I think there is an offer for Dann on the table and Blues are holding out for more. Loan players should be loaned with a view to a permanent move if both parties r happy, that way they have some heart in it, we have seen that with O’hara.

WHERE HAS ALL THE MONEY GONE ?

I can tell you, on a new ground!! Thats why we’ve got no debt yet, because of course we will have £15 million in debt when the ground is finished

Disgusted by the way the club is run. a complete lack of ambition from the Top. I am now a firm believer that Mick knows his targers, he just doesnt get the backing to go sign them!

Great – another main target lost to Leicester.

Mick reckons we will be interested in any great players who cost nothing – just about sums us up.

We have lost USA and brought in some fella from Swansea, I’m not convinced Johnson was the right CB from blues to buy and all our other targets have turned us down.

Sorry lads, but I can’t raise the optimism and enthusiasm for the coming season that some of you can – we were nearly relegated last year and have done almost nothing to improve whilst our rivals have.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get Dann & Ridgewell in then our defence would be complete in my opinion.
But let’s not get carried away and relise the books do have to balance and players need to depart but anymore come in.
I’m just annoyed that we still haven’t got a left back in and were going into the new season with the same defence apart from Johnson(quality signing by the way).
If the Baggies manage to take Foster,Dann & Ridgewell off the Blues for cut prices then what a bit of buisness that could be.

There is no evidence that Mick is just trying to accommodate Stephen Ward as at left back. He purchased Van Damme last year and it was through no fault of his that Van damme didn’t settle.

Richwolf – Every transfer window you moan, every transfer window you say we haven’t done enough, every week you’re saying we’re doomed, I remember your claim the early birds weren’t selling……… every single time the club, at every level, proves you wrong.

You bang on about ambition, ambition, ambition. I remember the clamour in January for our board to show the same ambition as Birmingham had. Well that’s worked out well for them. The board are clearly ambitious, but they have stated many times over & over, the ambitions are for long term growth…. not to simply blow a load of cash on short term player contracts who’ll come & go within 3 or 4 years & not leave the club anything to fall back on. The stadium is so crucial to increasing our revenue which in turn allows us to increase our spending, I really can’t comprehend why you struggle to see the importance of this. It’s not just about a few extra thousand seats, it’s the whole non-match day revenue as well.

Albion and ourselves appear to be run in a very similar fashion at the moment, I struggle how to see how you can be impressed with their ambition and disgusted at the lack of ours ?

We have Elekobi and Ward at left back. We have Zubar, Stears and Foley at right back. We then have Johnson, Berra, Stears, Craddock who all play at centre back. What Wolves need is a good deal on whoever they can get. We have a fair few utility players so in a sense we are well covered.

I think a midfielder is more sought after because after Henry and O’Hara we ain’t got anyone else. Guediroa and Edwards are injured, Milijas has a lot to prove still and we then only have wingers and strikers.

I would say midfielder is a bigger priority than left back due to the injuries we have there.

Also, this is to comment number FIVE and those like it:

The STAN CULLIS stand is being funded by cash which is set aside and nothing to do with the cash we have for transfers. I wish Wolves fans would stop believing and spreading fallacies in order to make your incoherent and unnecessary moaning seem true and well placed.

We have a strong team as it is, not a team that will break the top 10 but a team who will survive comfortably. Where’s the rush? And if we do make a bad start, Mick has time to get somebody in.

The three M’s could spend a load of money this season and get it wrong. They’ve upped their spending in accordance to the progress made since day one of the Three M’s genesis.

AND remember we have to assemble a 25 man squad, so Mick does need to offload somebody before we can sign someone else, otherwise we’re decent paying wages for a player to sit in reserves all season when they could be playing regular first team football and we could get some cash back off their sale or even loan out those players like Keogh.

As far as some of the other teams are concerned, Blackburn are screwed with these owners of theirs and will get relegated, then there’s Norwich who are not a Premier League side and I think you’ll find this division is too big for them and they’ve been promoted far too early…

And that’s just three teams. There are other sides who should be a lot more worried than us. How many players have we sold or released in the last five years that were regarded as one of our best players and we were gutted to lose. Personally, I can’t think of any. The addition of Roger Johnson and 3 poor teams promoted.

Elekobi played well last night and Ward is there for cover so why do we need a left back so badly? Hunt will run his legs off to track back and help out as well.

As for midfielders do we not have enough already? surely only Man City have more!

As for Keogh he is the ONLY player who can play Doyles position (in a 4-5-1) so i think we should keep hold of him.

But if you look at MM’s comments it clearly states that we are still looking and lets face it there is still plenty of time left. For me it would be stupid for a side in our position not to use the two loan deals available to us. I recommend young, hungry and talented lads from the top four clubs. Just look at Bolton and how well they have utilised this over the last few years. So where I would not be too bothered if we make no more permanent signings it would be unforgiveable not to use our loan options.
Incidentally has Sven Goran Eriksonn bugged McCarthy’s office, it seems they go for every body we go for. I think we could have some real fun there if thats true.

I have said it before and i’ll say it again we all need to be realistic. Steve Morgan agreed with Sir Jack to put £30m into the club and this he has done (and no it is not being spent in the Ground, those funds come from a different source).
Yes our turnover has risen due to TV money but we have spent nearly £50m on players over the last 4 years and recouped only about £5m.
Some of the players bought have failed (I won’t list them) but others are worth significantly more than we paid for them (including the likes of Karl)
The salary bill has risen to now be around £25m which rises to £30m with insurnace, bonus, etc. The sad fact of heh matter is that most of our money now goes on running costs and wages leaving very little for new players. As each season passes the wage bill spirals up and the funds for transfers falls. Eventually you end up where the likes of Everton are; having to sell their best players to fund team building.
As a club we MUST build a larger ground, yes we will not fill it every week but the attractive games will fill it and so the ‘average’ gate will rise and the revenue will also rise in tandem
I certainly would not wish to go through the agonies of the last day of last season again but I am also a realist and accept that we will finish only a handful of points above relagation (probably 42/43) which will be progress on last season and so I will be happy.

Now the truth is out, I remember many who commented that it is only June and you are jumping the gun, well it is now August and still not the players we need, this has happened because of the poor buys made by McCarthy that no one else wants, so the wage bill plus loss of the asset price is an issue.

That’s the reason Morgan has had to stick with McCarthy as a new manager would want to spend more money.

The defence is poor and will remain poor, another let down to the many fans who are being asked to pay their hard earned money to watch players who are not good enough.

    Very disappointing but hardly surprising.

I would take the same situation as last year, so we can build again, slowly but surely. Morgan is a business man, he will get the club into a position, which could become a potential purchase for an overseas buyers. He will then sell, but lets face it that not the answer. Are we ever going to win the league? Are we ever going to qualify for the Champions league? It has taken Man City, close to £750m to get there, we will never have that. So lets look forward to a long and exciting campaign, taking us away from the daily grind of reality once a week.

If we play the shirt tugging and constantly fouling Berra in preference to Stearman alongside Johnson next season – especially without giving Stearman and Johnson a chance to prove that it could be an ideal partnership we would be daft and myopic.

If we actually sold Stearman for the reported £1Million we would be absolutely freaking barking!!!

We got a million for that tweeting flop Halford – Stearman at 23 still has a great future ahead of him when given the chance to
gain the final experience he needs to avoid making the occasional error. I hope when he finally matures into the finished article it is with us rather than with another club.

It was only a few months ago that Stearman was praised by Mr Steve Morgan as one of our brightest prospects and given a new contract – so it would hardly make any sense to sell him – especially for a paltry million.

Realistically another season of struggle looms ahead I’m afraid and you always usually find one gem from the promoted three which I think will be QPR (along with Man City possibly the richest club in football). In saying that I fully realise the dual loyalties the Chairman will/may have in keeping his building business interests alive during a recession, along with the need to keep a football club in the top flight.

The above article has to be newspaper talk, either that or the E&S providing propaganda for Wolves to assist their bargaining position(s). Anything else suggests the Chairman’s building interests are far from healthy and need propping up by the true reason for the club’s existence, which is that of being the flagship of a city and the inspiration for thousands of fans, both within and outside that city.

morgan has not yet invested the money he was suposed to as part of the deal in buying the club. he has only invested money from tv rights and players sold none of his own. he then invests into the stadium and houses which in turn will make the club more valuable and him more money. that was not what we agreed steve.

if this is true and mm isnt going to sign anymore players then we are doomed,i watched the game against celtic on internet and the defence was shocking how we did’nt conceed a goal i dont know, bad finnishing by celtic i suppose but believe me there wont be bad finnishing in the prem bottom 3 all season at this rate and all the so called progress we have made will be wasted,i dont care what the board say players will not be sold even if we go down but player power will kick in and this team will be dismantled then lets see how long it takes us to get back up,,,,

if we need to sell the deadwood to bring funds in for new players were in big trouble? simply because they aint very good and no one wants em and who’s to blame for that mad mick and his scouts who convinced the board they was world beaters, millions have been wasted on buying in bulk when it should have been used to buy a few quality players like we have done now with ohara and johnson but to little to late,,,,,

i have been concerned all close season of the transfer policy of the club, that is what our budget is and whether we had woken up to the fact that we are a premiership club and must pay prem wages to attract better players than we already have at the club..We continue to lack ambition but I thought with johnson we had finally woken up.
But this news means once again that were trying to stay up on the cheap.
with a minus 20 goal difference from last season, and from the season before the argument that berra, stearman, ward, foley and elokobi are good enough and will get better baffles me.
They have improved but cannot perform consistently well enough at this level and we must have additional defenders to the squad. Also if you want to improve our defence we need another defensive midfielder like tiote at newcastle who can tackle and pass a ball unlike Henry.

As a measure of that achievement consider the status of the 2 teams who were promoted with us!

These are happy times at Wolves. Enjoy.

You clearly know nothing about maths or football, the prem is worth at least 30mill a year plus extra sponsership extra TV rev extra gate receips so lets take that up to AT LEAST 50mill so 150 mill over 3 years AT LEAST so that means we have approx and im being conservative 120 mill left for wages. I love it when idiots post on this site it makes me laugh. Nice on Mike !!

Re left back I think big George was pretty serviceable last year, I’d just be getting Danny Batth back from loan as a backup, seems a pretty good prospect to me.

Seems to me that the big problem last year was that the defensive unit was not operating as one, get a leader in there to sort it out. i reckon Johnson fits the mould.

I know you will all call me daft but Lucas Neill is available on a free. He is proven premiership quality and a wonderful leader, just thought I’d throw it in and wait for the backlash.

We do have a pretty useful midfield and as long as we can stay injury free a pretty decent striking partnership, SEB was still a bit on the chunky side last year let’s hope that his pre-season was productive because he is a very good striker.

I actually love the pragmatic approach being taken by the current admin. The ground re-development will yield great times ahead for this famous club and make no bones we will be in the Premiership to enjoy it.

I can’t imagine any of you would wish the club to be in massive debt and taken over ny some filthy rich Sultan to use as a plaything for himself and family, then to leave us in the same position as we were in the 80′s.

Anywhere from 10th to 14th this year, we would have been in mid-table last year had it not been for some poor late goals.

Transfer Fees, Wages, Signing on Fees, Clauses inc App Fees, Staff Bonuses, Player Bonuses, League Performance, Bonuses, Stadium Maintenance Fees, Electricity Bills, Tax, Running Training Complex, Coaches etc etc.

It’s not as straight forward as we receive 30m, put in the bank and BAM lets all spend it on players. It’s goes into the CLUB. The money you get comes in monthly payments as well not all in one.

Love how people just add up the money you get for staying up then presume it’s the cash available for improvement on the team.

I still reckon there will be more arrivals. Irrespective, if we had to go with what we have got, we are much stronger than at the start of last season. Roger Johnson and a fully fit O’Hara are class signings and De Vries is very good cover. I know we have injury concerns with Guedioura but surely we cannot have the misfortune of last season’s injury problems? Hunt and possibly Kightly will be like new players.
Furthermore, I would suggest that the 3 promoted clubs will struggle and the following will probably do worse than last season? Wigan, Blackburn, Albion, Bolton and Newcastle!

Can’t believe what most of these comments are getting at…we haven’t signed anyone else because there’s no quality players available. The 3 M’s know what’s needed – they work with the team every day. We don’t want to sign anyone who’s no better than what we have. We really would have to steal a player who wasn’t happy at his club. Dann? How many clean sheets did his defence keep? M Johnson? Good for one or two matches only. Ridgewell worth a bid or loan arrangement. Ward or George will cut it at left back when needed. It’s goals that we need and we do have the strikers to do it.

144 – Maybe you should follow through your maths logic. I would say that the average wage of our 25 man squad is now around £25k a week. That means £625k a week, that means £32.5 million a year, that means £97.5 million over 3 years.

On top of that spending you have all the other costs associated with running a club like agent fees, ground staff, academy running costs, coaching staff, office staff, gas, electric, water, council tax………. i’m sure there are many more costs as well

Flying Winger – you said they weren’t “good enough”, these players have proved you wrong for 2 consecutive seasons. I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be nice to upgrade our left back position….. but if we don’t, it won’t relegate us.

Just because MM says it is unlikely we will sign someone does not mean we won’t. These are press statements. All they do is take the pressure off a bit and point the press to look elsewhere for a story…. Then we sign someone!! As for saying our current players are collexctively not good enough… Good enough for what? They have got us to the premiership and then survived there for two seasons beating a few notable teams on the way. I think they are never going to be good enough for the moaners who comment on these notice boards but they are good enough to stay in the prem.

If you want a win at all costs mentality, i hear Birmingham don’t worry too much about things known as a “budget” and they usually have a few empty seats knocking around…. they also show great ambition by paying wages they can’t afford and getting in established players like David Bentley & Hleb, maybe they would be a better club for you to follow

They say that now they have reached the season ticket sales target; If McCarthy thinks he has improved the first team significantly it shows how out of his depth he is; At least 2 central defenders, a left-back, quality play-maker and a pacey forward would have taken WWFC up two levels, but yet again it will be touch and go and having to abandon any chance of an FA Cup final appearance, a boost the club desperately needs to increase it’s profile here and abroad.

I don’t want to get into any arguments about the relative financial gains of being in the Premiership, but I did see two separate calculations at the close of last season which apeared to me to be reasonable efforts; one of them stated the minimum net loss for any side relegated to the Champonship would be £26m and the other report suggested £24m, so they were in the same ball park, and on that basis something around those figures should be available. (Always bearing in mind the ongoing costs that any signings will incur and which need to be factored in.)

However, massive building programmes may drain much of that £24/26m to an extent that the two signings may well be all Wolves can afford on new players until they have offloaded any driftwood.

Nevertheless,I do hope not as I’m sure the defence still needs some serious propping up,(along with a change in team tactics that don’t include things like passing the ball back to the keeper from the kick-off). If that isn’t done the doomsday scenario whereby ambitious players leave a sinking team could be with Wolves next spring, just as they are with Blackpool and Birmingham now!

Stll, I’ll suspend any further navel gazing exercises until then, and walk in hope even if now with reduced expectatation. Cheers.
