Wolves reject toasted by former boss

Wolves reject Charlie Mulgrew walked off with the man-of-the-match champagne for Celtic – and manager Mick McCarthy was happy to toast him.

The Celtic defender – on the losing side in last night’s friendly as Wolves triumphed 2-0 – was the makeweight in the £600,000 deal that took Lee Naylor to Parkhead in 2006.

But Mulgrew struggled in his two years at Molineux and left to return north of the border to join Aberdeen for £150,000, after just seven appearances in the Championship.

Now 25, the full-back has improved dramatically since then and rejoined Celtic last summer, becoming a regular.

And McCarthy said: “Charlie Mulgrew was excellent. He came to us as a kid from Celtic and left our place not being half the player he is now.

“Maybe coming to Wolves wasn’t sexy enough – I’ve no idea.

“But I admire him because he went back to Scotland with Aberdeen and rebuilt his career and I thought he had a really good game.”
