Wolves face Adlene Guedioura lay-off

Monday 25th July 2011, 10:30AM BST.

Adlene Guedioura
Adlene Guedioura

Wolves midfielder Adlene Guedioura will today see a specialist to determine the extent of his ankle injury.

The Algeria World Cup star hasn’t played yet in pre-season after returning to training with the problem in his right ankle and is set for the trip to the consultant to discover how bad it is.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “Adlene is going to see a specialist today about his ankle – we hope it’s not too serious.”

With David Jones released and reports suggesting Liverpool’s Jay Spearing has snubbed a season-long loan move to Wolves, Guedioura’s absence has meant Wolves have a shortage of central midfielders with David Edwards still out with his back injury.

Jamie O’Hara made his comeback in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Notts County, when academy graduate David Davis played.

And McCarthy revealed Davis had been held back from going out on loan because of the shortage of players in the middle.

The Wolves boss said: “Adlene and David Edwards are injured. David Davis was actually going to go out on loan but I need him here at the moment, as cover for the others.

“David Edwards is gradually progressing and we will have to wait and see.”

Striker Sam Vokes will miss Wednesday’s friendly at Celtic with his groin injury but should be fit for Saturday’s trip to Ipswich.

    Central midfielder needed!!!

    Someone to replace/back-up Henry………

Its a shame with Adlene as he is an excellent prospect but cant stay fit long enough to show us what he’s about. Fingers crossed its not serious.

To be honest id be happy starting the season if we can get a left back and a central midfielder in. Id love another striker too but the other 2 positions are more vital. Im confident Wolves can stay clear of the drop zone a bit better this year.

    Transfers?

I think this again highlights the lack of quality in depth. 2 midfielders injured and its panic stations and we have to delay a youngsters loan who hasnt started in the league yet. And it puts into question whether Adlene is fit enough to cope on the EPL?

The lack of depth was highlighted last year when 2 strikers were injured and we had to play Vokes and Ward up front against Stoke.

If this doesn’t make Mick realise we need a CB, LB, MF and FWD then i don’t know what will. There is some serious dead wood that needs moving on and fast aswell. If the likes of Maeirhofer, Vokes, Keogh havent got a chance mutually cancel the contracts, get rid.

This explain’s interest in signing another midfielder. Hopefully Guedioura’s injury is not that serious and he will be fit at the start of the season.
Interesting speculation regarding Stevie Hammell of Motherwell. A promising left back. Hope it’s true.

I can’t see too many problems for us this season in midfield, plenty of time yet to sign a couple of player’s. The Final two weeks before kick off is when it all really gets going!! E&S scratching around for stories to make their boss think they are working me thinks.

    Hitzlesperger, Ridgewell, Onouha(loan), DJ Campbell

I’ve heard no speculation linking us to Onouha, i just think he would be ideal for us

I also think ‘ideally’ we could do with another striker battling it out with Doyle, Fletcher and Ebanks-Blake

We definitely need a new left back and central midfielder though

That David Davis looks a good player, he played better than Henry when he came on against County.

Henry isn’t good enough in my opinion, he’s too negative we’ve all seen it.

We should be bringing the likes of Davis and Batth through instead of farming them out on loan all the time.

Mick will only take us so far as a club, he’s too stubborn to pay good money for quality players.

    2 CM needed!

Henry & edwards are both not good enough for prem! they should actually be the cover!

It is not easy identifying players that are available for that position but i do feel we are only 1LB atleast 1CM and a CB from being a decent unit.

I do fully expect us to start the season as is though, i bet teams are already getting there tactics ready for playing us, and thats hit elokobi’s side! a likeable fella but no prem LB im afraid!

Give johnson captaincy and replace henry please just imagine a ball winner that could actually pass a ball forward and start a move off instead of slowing the pace or passing backwards! he can still do a job in squad but for me has lost his way a bit!

Will anyone listen to me what we need more than anything is a striker that can finish inside the box ( an Owen/Fowler) type of player we have consistantly been one of the lowest scorers in the Prem all the seasons we have been in there. Yes Fletcher is a good player and yes Doyle works hard and will score 5-6 spectacular goals a season but we need another 15 goal a season player to go with Fletcher.

Com on Wolves sort it out. Our midfield is ok, yes our defence could be a bit stronger but we need a striker

The three that you have suggested would add little to our squad IMO.

Our squad is strong enough to compete in the Premiership next season, yes additional signings are always welcome but we don’t need to ‘break the bank’ to sign anyone, least of all journeymen looking for another pay day.

Spot on. Wardy can play anywhere.. The only niggling problem I have is he isn’t very good in any of them.

We need to replace Hapless Henry. Been saying it two years now. And we still need another left back, centre half as an absolute minimum.

Virtually no money at all spent this year so far. I’m hoping they pull something out the bag or maybe they like to demonstrate that they’ve learnt nothing over the last two years.

As for talking about our transfer business, i honestly dont think you can talk. Do you remember this little gem of yours “I was impressed with Birminghams january business and West Hams. Ours was abysmal.” So much for their amazing transfer activity.

Judging by the amount of times you have continually been proven wrong i think that if you are saying that our transfer business isnt good enough we can all be safe in the knowledge that it probably is. Right, Karl Henry is a local lad, fine and he may sometimes put 100% in ….in late lunging tackles ! I really want to like him but having watched his performances over the years, even in the championship, my conclusion is that he is not good enough for this level. I’m not a “knocker” but the times that he has been in possesion in the middle of the pitch only to pass back instead of out to Jarvis, or up to Doyle, or out wide to someone in space just frustrates me and we dont catch teams on the break when we could. I think he either doesn’t have the vision or he doesn’t have the confidence in his ability. How many times in the last 3 years has our “CAPTAIN” put in a man of the match performance ? I’m sorry but i believe matches are won and lost from midfield. What we need is another Alex Rea type player that can get stuck in but also can create. A solid LB another CB and a goal poacher are what we require to be a consistent mid table side.

Guedioura’s been unlucky with injury as he looks a decent enough player, but even when he’s fit, even McCarthy doesn’t seem inclined to give him a run in the side.
Given that we seem to be making a concerted effort to recruit in midfield, is Mick making a tacit admission that we’re short in that area, contrary to what some posters on here seem to think?
Personally, I’d be inclined to agree with him; Milijas is too inconsistent and lightweight, Henry needs genuine competition for his place, Edwards and Guedioura have repeated injury problems, and whilst Ward and Foley are honest competitors, neither should represent anything other than a stopgap in midfield.
Hitzelsperger and Reo-Coker would provide a goal threat and energy in an are where we lack both qualities, so I’d be happy to see us moving for either or both.

It doesn’t worry one bit why? I don’t rate the guy, I see a player who loses the ball far too much, positioning play is poor and he doesn’t pick out a killer ball, he runs around a lot has a shot on goal but he doesn’t dictate the play, Millijas could if given chance but doubt that very much.

Anyway Zubar started out as a midfielder and Foley could do a job in there if needs be or Davis if he has been playing well in pre-season.

On another note it seems Hammill is going to have a tough task of getting into the team this season being that there’s an article of him doubting himself as team player well the reporter has written he’s been told to be more of a team player which I find harsh, very harsh on the lad he didn’t deserve to get dropped when Kites walked straight back into the team and really did nothing better and then gets injured but that’s Mick’s fault for rushing him kites back into the team.

On a possible loan I’ll would like to see Cleverly come here on loan from Man Utd
