Wolves quids in on Roger Johnson and Jamie O’Hara deals

Wolves’ hardball approach on transfers has been rewarded after the club secured top signings Roger Johnson and Jamie O’Hara on cut-price deals, it has emerged.

The club paid just over £4m to Birmingham for Johnson for a flat fee with no add-ons.

That figure is nowhere near the £7m ‘confirmed’ by Blues at the time, or the £6.4m that was widely quoted in the days after the deal was completed.

Midfielder O’Hara cost them £3.5m, well below the £5m reported when he signed from Tottenham.

Reports suggested Blues had initially wanted staggering £14m for Johnson before dropping their price to £10m then £9m.

If this is true, then it shows just what astute businessmen we have running our great club. We are in good hands and, even if we had got relegated last term, we know we would not be in the sort of predicament Blues now find themselves.

This is the best time to be a Wolves fan in over 30 years.
If we keep all our ‘key’ players fit this time around we will finish mid-table – no problem. From there we will be able to build again.

Ok, excellent negotiating skills in securing the services of two top players. But Mick, WE STILL NEED ANOTHER CENTRE HALF AND A LEFT BACK! NOT ANOTHER MIDFIELDER! You’ve been saying this yourself. Get them in and we can all approach the season with an air of confidence. We could do with perhaps a slightly younger player alongside Johnson, pref with Prem. experience. Also lets remember that we have still not found a replacement for Van Damme.

Shows how much of a good job Jez did for us. When fans were urging him to just pay Birminghams asking price for fear of losing out, and now its emerged that we got Johnson for cheaper than it would have cost for the championship player mills. Fantastic bit of business and just goes to show why you shouldnt just throw all your money around just because you have it. I wouldnt be suprised to see a couple more signings before the season starts.

For all those people that do critisise Jez, just remember that you are the same people that were willing to pay £10 million to £14 million on Johnson, yet Jez got 2 players for cheaper than that, and thats why his financial sense is better for this club than yours will ever be.

Moxey proves his worth yet again. I doubt there is a better run club in the world let alone the premier league. New Stadium, new training ground – is there a better team to support right now? However, if we have only spent £8m this summer, that surely leaves some cash from Sky to splash out on a class left back and some cover / successor to Karl Henry???? 43 points this season, if we improve by 3pts every season we will win the League In 2026!!

How ever if it’s true it’s great business, I can believe the figure quoted for OHara, as it was agreed back in January before he had kicked a ball last season & was coming back from a very serious injury.

I still think we’ll see Warnock recruited from Villa & a suprise loan signing at centre half plus a young centre forward from one of the big boys.

Lets face it, the club are doing their business behind closed doors, We dont know who else we are looking at and the E&S dont know either. If we are after any new players we will go about it in our own way without any press knowing about it, so maybe we should all have a little patience and realise that the people at this club know what they’re doing.

These two deals along with others over the last two seasons highlights the step by step approach Wolves that is improving the quality of the squad. Yes there have been a few mistakes along the way, but that’s the same at all clubs. To me the positives outweigh the negatives.

Since promotion we have recruited quality players such as Doyle, Fletcher, Hunt, O’Hara and now Johnson.
Together with some of our promoted players who have improved by playing at a higher level, such Jarvis and Foley, we are now in a far better position to consolidate of status in the Premiership.

It would not surprise me to hear of another major signing in coming weeks. But if we don’t, there is always the January transfer window to strenthen the squad.

I would try and sign Ridgewell and Bassong. £5m-£6m for the pair. That would be class. Both can play either centre half or left back. Both would walk straight into the side next to Johnson and Foley.

Kidology in business deals is part of the process but if this article is remotely accurate it is impossible to reconcile with the present inability to do essential deals for additional defenders. From there, it is just as difficult to see how the whole scenario fits with the Chairman’s comments which were to the effect that he did not want another nerve wracking end to the season this time.
So, I’ll stay on the sidelines, assume the article is the result of a misunderstanding, and await two more purchases in time for the individuals to have ‘bedded’ down at the club before the season starts!
If that doesn’t materialise it will definitely point me in the direction of taking a holiday which would be the first for five years!

Great business MMM, great new stand, great new training facilities … but, mark my words, that goalie from Swansea will be the greatest signing of the lot!

    Spearing – midfield on loan
Sturridge or Wellbeck striker on loan

Bravo, 3M’s! Still time to soldify further! Keep up the great tempo in this open window. One or two more, yes, the highly spomen of “left back,” but even still, if we were to stop hunting for any further additions we look fairly solid down the middle of the park! By the way, he seems to be overlooked, but I reckon Ikeme might be pushing Wayne’s world and the new Dutchman’s! Heard he has been the best amangst the three…so far! UTMW!

While the new players add to the quality of the squad and are welcome additions, I am still not convinced that without further fresh blood that this group can (a) propel us up the table to a “safe” mid table position (b)keep us consistently out of the bottom three positions in the table. We need to have a LOT more firepower up front than we showed last season and a generally tighter defence. Doyle, Ebanks-Blake and Vokes need to be a lot more productive. Johnson will be a big plus defensively but we will still be suspect at the back against the top teams.

Our pre-season games to date hardly inspire much confidence.

Do I detect a tad of the old closing ranks around our Karl, in yesterday 2pm issue of the E & S. I can think of a lot of reason why this chap should be fighting for his place, his intelligence level being one of them. Captain Sensible or what. Thirteen very obvious comments was obviously thirteen too many, er for exactly who, I wonder.

so why is there no money to bring in anymore players , when they are spending millions on a training ground and stadium , should’nt the team come first ? a top premiership club will bring in more revenue so spend on team please ! common sense walk before you can run and not the other way round !

Looking at the deal that brought Johnson in, makes me think there is a real possibility of signing Dann! Jonhson was valued at £14m and we get him for £4m + add ons! We could get Dann for £4-5m.

    We should get;

    one more centre back

Bassong £3-4m (played for Tottenham today)
Upson free (although story has gone cold)
    Dann £4-5m

    one left back

    Ridgewell £2-3m

If Hiztleberger wants to come then we’ll have him. If not then i think we will loan a midfielder and a striker.

    Spearing?
    McEcheran?
    Sturridge?
    Welbeck?
    Macheda?
    Ngog?

    I think;

    Dann
    Ridgewell
    McEcheran (Loan)
    Welbeck (Loan)

These deals are very good if that news is true. However, we still need another CB, LB,CM,RB and striker. The players who I would get rid of would be:
    Berra
    Keogh
    Vokes
    Edwards
    SEB
    Foley
    Maybe Henry
Thinks players to get in are:
    Joey Barton/Mark Noble
    Welbeck ( on loan)
    Daniel Sturridge
    Wayne Bridge (Loan)
    Julien Faubert
    Scott Dann
If what has been said is true Wolves need to spend more to improve this team and aim for better next year.

On the day Johnson signed Moxey was quoted as saying that the fee being reported (£6.8m) was wildy exaggerated, therefore, I wouldn’t be surprised if this story reflects the reality.

So far so good but wise up suckers, we are doing business on the cheap because of the huge amounts of $$ being spent on the stadium.

Ok, i did say back in May we wouldnt spend that much this season. But i said it would be around the £12m mark, which is what we all thought had been spent, now if this is true and we have only spent 7.5m, then we have got to get a left back. Loan siging? maybe bridge if we can get a deal for at least half his wages, or if buying, then i think ridgewell would be a decent signing as he can also play centre back. I hope Danny batth can get a loan to Shef Wed, and show MM what he can do, as i think he looks great. Same with Davis, if he can go out again, but someone in the higher leagues, i think he owned the pitch when he played for the shrews, my boss a gay meadow season holder says the same. I know were not going to fill the three positions we want (LB,

Not too sure where people think all the money is coming from! Yes being in the Premier does mean we are turning over £60m per annum but once you take out all the running costs, VAT, management costs, youth team, reserves etc.
Acknowledge despite very prudent salary caps that basic salaries for the first team top £25m plus bonuses, insurances etc. there is probably little more than £10m per annum left to spend on players. The longer we spend in teh Premiere the higher average slaries become until eventually the only money left to buy players will be that generated form sales (this is how the likes of Fulham, Bolton, Everton, Sunderland, et al operate). Thus if this report is true then we might just have a couple of million left so don’t hold your breath.

Granada Wolf – So far so good but wise up sucker, we are doing business on the cheap because of the amazing work being done by the people running this club. What does it matter how much money we spend as long as we bring in the right players. I dont think anyone can complain at the quality of player we have bought in so far, and the price we have paid is not a bad thing, in fact it shows how well this club is being run. Im guessing your one of the immature fans that like to brag how much a team spends during the transfer window.

As for all the people complaining that because we have spent less, we should be bringing in more players. I have no doubt we will, as theres still plenty of time to go to bring in new players. Im guessing the getting rid of players before bringing in new players is more to do with the wage bill than raising extra transfer funds.

Agreed Wolfhedd (92) We are a very well run club as the spectre of our near folding up still haunts the corridors.
However we are not going to be safe with the current squad unless at last some of our youngsters actually get into the first team and add to the quality. We’ve mad a lot of youngsters professional in recent years but thus far where is the real class act that we need?
