Wolves boss Mick McCarthy and his players are lending their support to a lung-bursting challenge being taken on by two staff.

Manchester-based club mentors Mike Wood, 52, and Jeff Whitley, 32, are running 10 half marathons in 10 days from August 22-31, and then the Carvers Wolverhampton Marathon on Sunday, September 4 to try to raise £10,000 for charities in the Wolverhampton and Stockport areas.

“‘Woody’ set himself a challenge and it’s wonderful to have a goal to aim for,” said McCarthy, who has been close friends with Wood since he joined Manchester City in 1983.

“It will be fabulous if he achieves it and well done to everyone else for helping him out. To try to raise all that for charity shows what a good heart he’s got.”

Wood said: “We work as club mentors giving advice to players of the pitfalls that come with being a professional footballer and we want to lead by example by working hard and raising money for charity.

“Our target is to run all the half marathons in under two hours and the marathon in under four hours.”

Wolves academy player Johnny Gorman lives near Wood and inspired him to take on the challenge earlier this summer.

Express & Star Wolves correspondent Tim Nash is joining them for one of the 13.1 mile runs on Thursday, August 25, when it’s hoped club secretary Richard Skirrow will also participate.
