Jez Moxey expects test for Wolves

Chief executive Jez Moxey has insisted there is no guarantee Wolves will find it any easier in the new Premier League season.

Wolves are preparing to embark on their third successive campaign in the top flight for the first time since 1982.

Despite staying in the Premier League with three minutes to spare last season, Moxey and manager Mick McCarthy are optimistic the experience of the squad coupled with the quality of new signings Jamie O’Hara and Roger Johnson will see Wolves have the best chance of improving on their positions of 15th and 17th in the last two seasons.

The bookies see it slightly differently, having made Wolves fifth favourites for the drop after Wigan and promoted teams Queens Park Rangers, Norwich and Swansea.

But, given the unknown factor of the three promoted teams, Moxey is cautious.

He said: “You’d like to have that view but I think that would be paying disrespect to the other 19 clubs.

“Wisdom says this third year in the Premier League wisdom should get easier, but there are no guarantees because everybody is trying to improve the same way.

“Some will spend more money than they have got just to stay in the league and be prepared to take huge debts on board, and you could get caught out by a club doing that.

“We’re investing and trying to do it sensibly.”
