Five year anniversary for Wolves boss
Thursday 21st July 2011, 11:40AM BST.
Mick McCarthy today celebrated half a decade as Wolves manager by declaring “I would love another five years – and let’s lift a major trophy.”
Boss McCarthy, appointed as Glenn Hoddle’s successor on 21 July 2006, is already the current fifth longest-serving boss at one Premier League club.
McCarthy is also fourth on Wolves’ post-War list after the legendary Stan Cullis, Bill McGarry and Graham Turner and has his own place in club history after winning the Championship and earning a third successive season in the top flight for the first time since 1982.
And the 52-year-old said: “I want to be here for a long time. I’ve been here five years, but I would love another five years – that would be great.
“This is a great part of my footballing life here – it’s been brilliant. I’m in touch with realism – if we could win a cup then great, but not at the expense of relegation.
“But of course we all want to win a medal – when we were kids we all dreamt of that.
“Playing in a cup final and winning it and as a manager, it’s on the wishlist.”

Well Done Mick!
I’ve knocked you and probably will continue to do so, but I like it when you prove me wrong, so keep doing it and lets hope the board get behind your plans!

well done mick you have brought success in the five years you have been here who would have thought tha this would be our third year in the premeirship when you think we had the like of hoddle and taylor ex england managers and we were light year away from the promised land!
5 great years at that. Its been a fantastic ride with many highs and very few lows, You may have had your stick from certain fans, but i think its safe to say that you have proven all those fans wrong when they said you would never be a prem manager basing it on your 1 and only season previously in the prem with Sunderland. You have still got your knockers but im sure everyone associasted with this club, including the knockers themselves want you to prove them wrong. If 5 more years mean we continue to pregress with this fantastic young and hungry regime, ignoring all the prima donnas and mercinaries then i will take that anyday.

Ey oop, numpties.
Merlin here, five years, eh? Cracking, I’ve put a right shift in down here.
Didn’t start off too grand, but I knew once I got the boy Wardy in, we were going places. I mean, we won the Championship, but the following two ding dong relegation battles? Right smashing. All the boys putting in a proper shift, proper champions all of ‘em.
Another five years? Easy. Just gotta find me another Wardy and we’ll call if fifteen.
Roll on this year’s relegation ding dong. Love ‘em, me.

Mick McCarthy is a cash cow to the Wolves owner.£10 investment,Mick has earned at least £100m in extra income over and above standard championship money. If ever he left Wolves htere would be a queue of championship clubs wanting to hire him.For us fans Mick has given us our pride back.I often go to lich field, a Villa town, they like to call it a city. But theses days it is great to see lots of wolves colours proudly displayed.

Well done mick when hoddle left we had nothing now a good young team new ground on the way and three years in the premier league all in five years.
…And i think non-numpty Wolves fans would be happy to have him for another 5 years. And yes a major trophy would be magic. Credit where credit’s due, Mick has done brilliantly so far. UTW!!

good work mick, your a top bloke, you will be an even better bloke if you buy a decent LB..
keep up the good work m8.

Its really hard to not like big Mick he is the kind of bloke you would like as your mukka down the pub on a Saturday. I just think he needs to be dragged into the 21th Century we need to invest a lot and I know some people will say we should not over commit the club and I agree but if being in the Prem is worth the reported £80million then why not spend 50-60 million of it and keep the rest to ensure the clubs survival as I gurantee the championship is worth a lot less.
Congrats Mick. I was at the first match you took as Wolves manager. Away at Plymouth, the improvement you have made since that game with the team you inherited cannot be exaggerated.
Long may you reign over us. Well done Mate!!
Up The Wolves
Report abuse
Well done Mick. Here’s to another 5 years of improvements and, hopefully, a major trophy, as long as it’s not at the expense of our Premier League status – a la Blues Carling Cup.

Anther five years … another fifteen more like.
Best Wolves Manager …. certainly in modern times. Best Manager we have ever had.
Only trouble is, he ticks all the boxes for the next England job!
When you think of where we were 5 years ago, and for 25 years before that, I think that puts Mick’s achievements into perspective.
Let’s hope for more of the same over the next 5 years, steady improvement and to be looked on as an established premier league team.
We are having another summer of sensible transfer dealings to gradually improve the squad. O’Hara and Johnson and a couple of good loan moves will be great business.
I think it’s great to be a Wolves fan right now.
Surely a cheap dig at Brum! Love it!!!
I like Mick and fair play to him but 12) Bob Le Chien really lol i am afraid he doesnt tick any boxes for England
Report abuse
He has taken u further than any other manager has managed to do in the last couple of generations. Stability has got to be the way to go.
The players perform for him, they respect him, the people in the game respect him too.
The club always needed a strong personality to deal with expectation, I think we thats the reason where we are now.
What i like about him is he’s a realist, things don’t change over night.
The seems to be in great shape for the future. Keep it going Mick.
Congratulations Mick.
Now go find us a decent Left-back!!
Out of Darkness.
Well done mick, congratulations.
I have had the benefit of speaking to Mick on a number of occasions and he knows what he is doing, he knows the strengths and weaknesses of the team, he knows the centre half and left back issue and is aware of the financial implications of addressing it. Cummon the board back him.

Top man (ager!) and you have made a lot of people eat their words mate ! Keep it up

Good luck to Mick and WWFC, lets keep improving, the team, the ground, the training facilities and the city.

Well done, Mick. He is just what we need at WW. Realistic and honest. He stops the happy clappers getting ahead of ourselves and adds a sense of proportion to procedings. We fish in a different pool only (only!!!) offering £40k pw. We are solvent, well run and progressing. I am delighted with Mick McCarthy and his team. May they be with us for many years to come. Chopping and changing every few years is no good. This guy is committed to us. We should love him and embrace him as a true Wolf. Wave that wand, Merlin. Congratulations, Mick and keep up the great work. We are Wolves!

Congratulations Mick, glad to have you as our manager and hopefully for many a year to come. you have brought success and continued progress and development, delivered us to the promised land and kept us there for three seasons, lets hope we can stay a bit longer….i think its fair to say we all like it there!
Moxey and Morgan need to back you at least one last time in this closed season and sanction bringing in a LEFT BACK!
All the best Mick (left back please)
Up the Mighty wolves….
P.S we need a left abck..

I’ve got to echo the sentiments of previous posters and say a massive ‘well done’ to Mick. I’m still not convinced he’s the man to take us the next step to a higher level in the Premier League but looking back on his five years in charge I can’t help but think it’s been pretty amazing. Especially considering where we were after Hoddle. The best thing MM has brought in (his biggest strength in my opionion) is a fantastic team spirit. We all like to moan but seeing players take pride in wearing the old gold like they do now and throughout Mick’s reign has been brilliant. Especially considering some of the mercenaries we had to put up with when Jack’s money was naively thrown around! It’s a good time to be a wolf at the mo. Congrats also to thew other two Ms – Moxey and Morgan.

Happy anniversary Mick!
Arguably the best manager at the Wolves since i started to support them back in 1974.
He is definately up there with Mcgarry and Turner in my eyes.
Mick has been instrumental in the way the team and the club as a whole have developed and improved in the last 5 years, credit where its due.
Here’s to the next 5 Mick!…..or10?

Wonder if we’ll go another 5 years without a decent left back?

Thank you for all the hard work that you have put into our beloved club and I hope that we continue on our current path!

Mick has brought us so far. After the Hoddle debacle, he’s turned the club around. The whole club ethos reflects Mick, and i’m chuffed he’s our manager. He cares, and the players care. The togetherness at the club, as mentioned, is a rarity in the modern game, and he’s improved us season on season. I don’t think we can ask for much more.

Well done Mick…. don`t always agree with your team selections, desperatly need a seasoned left back. I too remember those dark days and the cloud the Twaddle left us in. With the likes of O`Hara and Johnson signing the only way can be up…….. UTW

Hear hear! Well done Michael, lets hope you`re still the manager for the next oh, 60 years shall we say? Unless we`re bottom at Xmas of course! No, must be POSITIVE!!! Whats happened to Lee Wallace?

9) Mad Mick has always had to operate within a set budget and tight wage structure. On that basis, he has done brilliantly! Yes, he has frustrated us all with his stubborness, at some stage and wasted money – Alex Ferguson has done it many times! However, Wolves currently boast a multitude of mainly young, full internationals – Hennessey, Foley, Berra, Ward, Jarvis, Gorman, Guedioura, Hunt, Edwards, Vokes, Fletcher, Keogh and Doyle. Admittedly, a couple will have to be moved on but that’s the way of life.
Interesting links we have at present are Spearing and Ayala and I think that both would be quality additions but we would have to move others on too. We must get a left back though.
Well done Merlin!

I have to swallow a little here but I must say that I agree 100% with Richwolf[No.1],But pleas Mick get us a partner for Johnson and a Left back and I will be a lot happier.

I have not been your biggest fan Mick but I take my hat off to you for keeping us in the Premier League.
Im not a massive fan of MM i have to admit, but if you didnt watch us and looked in from a far you would judge what he has done with the club as a roaring success! My opinion of him has been clear on these pages before, i like MM as a guy, i just think his stubborness & lack of tactical awareness is his floors!
Take tuesday night for example, if from that he cant see we need a LB urgently, a centre Midfielder to replace Henry Urgently & that Foley is in no way shape or form is a midfielder then something is wrong with his judgement, i accept that you have to try things in pre season that you dont normally but the fact is thats Henrys position & he was dreadful (again) plus he plays Foley as a mid in actual prem games.
Another point about friendlies, MM must have a starting 11 in mind, play them together for 45 each game, then div about with the team in other half, surely its best these players get to form an understanding rather than being thrown together & looking like strangers who have never played together which was the case with some of our football last year!
Its not always possible with injuries i know but i just think its that simple!
Take germanys national team, they hardly ever change there team if all fit whatever the game…. and you cant really argue with there record can you!
Anyway its a good time to be a wolves fan as no matter how bad our tactics and football is at times it still is better than having to travel to championship grounds! & we should all be proud that our club is being run properly and have big plans that are being acted on!
Can MM & TC be the men to deliver a team to match Morgans ambition?
JURY MIGHT BE A WHILE!!!
Congratulations Mick, ignore the idiots and the Baggies having fun and keep doing what you have been doing. Long may you reign!!

It is very pleasant to read so many positive comments on MM. He deserves many acolades for his achievements to date. Like any human being he can look back and think in hindsight I would have not done that. I hope he is with us for many more years and I wish him good luck and fortune.
Could I also add a big thank you to the other two Ms. Moxey in particular has had to take a great deal of criticism. Our club is well run and he must take some credit for that.
Now let us ALL get behind the club to ensure we remain, where we deserve to be, in the Premier League

Without doubt McCarthy has been the best manager for many many years.
Unlike some other clubs, we are blessed with having a management team that work together to continually improve the club, both on and off the field.
Long may it continue.
Changing the subject, i hope the talk of taking two Liverpool players on loan is not just to offset selling Jarvis to them !!
Thanks Mick. Any other club in the world and you would be feted. Wolves though, and you are harangued, insulted, doubted and accused of being unable to take us to the next level. You had no Premier League success with Sunderland, and yet you are still thought of there with fondness. Here’s to you, and I hope you will be Wolves Manager for many years yet.
Win a cup for us this year, and that will delight most of us. If it’s not the Premier League Trophy this season, FA CUP. Premiership Trophy and Champions Leage Trophy next season, it still may not be enough for some folks on here.

It’s amazing to read such support for Mick on these pages – he must be delighted. It will be interesting to see what a lot of these people say at Christmas when we are struggling near the bottom.
The three Ms deserve every bit of support we can give them throughout the whole of the coming season with only constructive criticism when it’s really necessary.

Congratulations Mick, I hope you stay there for many, many more years. All the best.

Mick’s bluff commonsense demeanour conceals a sharp football brain.
Let’s not forget the occasions over the past couple of seasons when we have not simply beaten but actually outplayed some of the top teams in the world. You can’t do that with hard work alone.
I hope he gets sufficient resources now to be able to turn these great cameos into the norm. If he does, then we’ll be a ‘big club’once more.
Now wouldn’t that be an achievement!
Well done Mick pity you didn’t take over after Graham Turner! What waste of years in the Championship or what ever it was called then.

well done that man, keep proving us wrong, best man for the job, good luck next season, lets finish above aston vanilla.

Crowfish, great posting cannot disagree at all.
Mick has done a great job in bringing us to and keeping us in the Premiership, now he needs to move us up a level, this means signing a Left Back as top priority,Centre Half, and either a competitive midfielder or back up goalscorer.
Still lets praise him for his achievements as this is what the article is all about.

Top man and the best manager at Wolves since Bill McGarry.
I hope you are our manager for a long, long time. The club is unrecognisable to the shambles you inherited and your place in our history is assured.
You got to admire the bloke for all he’s done for the club.
Now if only Jelle Van Damme didn’t get homesick, our left back slot problem would be sorted.

ADAM H – Considering we are now in our 3rd straight season in the premier league, i dont think you can talk about being a championship club. You only managed 1 point against us last season and that was a close call, Your transfer business so far suggests you arent going to do too much better this season. I find it funny how you all think that just because you finished comfortably last season you have a good enough squad to survive already, reminds me of the Birmingham fans at the start of last season.
Super Mick is an absolute legend. When he took the reigns I truly feared releagtion into league one, not promotion to the PL. He built a team out of nothing and instilled in the players a level of committment and dedication which I had never seen before as a wolves fan.
Not many managers could have come in when we had no money and build a team which could both gain and retain premiership status.
As a Wolves fan I will always be grateful for what Mick has done, and next season when we lose a few on the bounce we should remember the progress we have made under this manager rather than call for his head!
That said, I agree with the rest of you that we desperately need a quality left back!!
Congratulations, Mick. When you arrived, thanks to Hoddle, we had hardly any senior players left.At that time, where we are now was only a dream. Thanks for making it a reality.

crowfish you are talking like a prat! thank god that Mick is our manager and not you, maybe the fact “that” he is looking at the two Liverpool lads – 1.a midfielder and 2. a defender, has he said he is still looking, but idiots like you think it can all be done in an instance, reflected by wanderer in eire agreeing with you – pair of numpties or what.
How can he play his 11 when he had 4/5 out with injuries + 3 returning late due to playing in internationals, or maybe he should have played them anyway – because after all said and done they were only slight knocks – and who the F cares what the Germans do, has I said numpties or what.
