Wolves manager Mick McCarthy joined several of the club's 1974 League Cup-winning team in a celebration to mark the 45th anniversary of London Wolves.

McCarthy travelled down after his team's 2-1 friendly defeat to Crewe on Saturday and joined Wembley heroes Geoff Palmer, Kenny Hibbitt, John Richards, Dave Wagstaffe plus Barry Powell at the event, held at Charlton Athletic.

Team-mates Phil Parkes, Steve Daley and Steve Kindon, who were part of the 1974 squad, also attended the event.

And McCarthy brought the house down with his opening gambit: "Thanks very much – that's the first time I've had a standing ovation at Charlton Athletic!"

The Wolves boss, who was joined by director John Gough and secretary Richard Skirrow, went on to say he liked the London Wolves events because of the positive reaction he always had from the fans.

Fans and the stars listened to a video address from former captain Mike Bailey, who was unable to attend the event because of a prior engagement.

Bailey revealed how coach driver Sid Kipping insisted on driving past the Hawthorns on the way back after they had won the cup.

Gough told the fans about the plans to build a world class academy at Compton and the latest on the £16million new Stan Cullis Stand, while Richards paid tribute to the organisers and thanked for how well the former players are treated.

The London Wolves group is the club's oldest official supporters club.
