Roger Johnson agrees Wolves move

Roger Johnson is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ third summer signing tomorrow as manager Mick McCarthy looks to continue strengthening.

The 28-year-old defender declared he is “halfway” to signing for Wolves as he continued to undergo his medical.

Birmingham confirmed a fee had been agreed yesterday, but it is believed to be slightly under the club-record £7million Wolves paid for Steven Fletcher last summer.

The former Cardiff and Wycombe defender has agreed a long-term deal set to make him Wolves’ highest paid player at around £40,000 a week.

The loose ends of the deal are being tied up but, with all parties hopeful there will be no late hitches, the club plan to formally unveil Johnson at a press conference tomorrow.

Negotiations for Johnson were resumed over the weekend, it has emerged, after Blues came down on their demands because of their financial position.

Wolves are armed with extra funds after the £1million sale of Greg Halford to Portsmouth, who sealed his three-year deal yesterday.

Next on their hitlist is a left-back, although boss McCarthy would like to bring in another central defender and they retain an interest in West Ham’s Matthew Upson.

Jonathan Woodgate, who signed for Stoke yesterday, wanted £20,000-a-week plus £10,000-a-week appearance money, but Wolves declined the offer.

As for left-backs, Wolves have to weigh up whether to go toe-to-toe with Albion for Birmingham’s £3million-rated Liam Ridgewell, or choose the cheaper option in Hearts’ Lee Wallace, who has a year left on his contract and would cost between £1million to £1.5million.

Get him signed up Jez and stop messing around, remember Scott Dann was ready to sign before Birmingham offered more money and look how much that has potentially cost us.

Bid £15m for Lescott and I’ll really believe the 3M’s can take us to the next level. Some of this can be funded by selling the deadwood – Ward, Keogh, Vokes, Berra, Stearman, Doyle, Henry and Jarvis.

Here’s the most important line for all of those saying on here who complain so much about how long the signing process takes:

“Negotiations for Johnson were resumed over the weekend, it has emerged, after Blues came down on their demands because of their financial position.”

So we’ve probably saved ourselves 3m from what Birmingham wanted and still got the player.

I believe this deal truly marks a watershed in Wolves’ history. The way the game has changed in recent times means this is the sort of deal we need to do to try and move on to the next level.

However, it is a massive investment and risk as it must change the wage structure at the club. There are no guarantees, but this shift should cement our position in this league.

But I feel a little sadness and no little angst at what we have lost. Not so much as a club, but as a sport.

No 2 Bob Wolf – What are you on about? Don’t you think they ARE trying to sell the deadwood in Keogh, Vokes, Berra.

As for your comments on Ward, he’s never going to be a world beater but his attitude alone is an example to the younger players and enough to allow him to stay as a squad player.

As for Doyle, you obviously have never played the game or understand it as this guy is class at what he does. He’s not a prolific goalscorer but that isn’t his job, he’s there to do the dog work up front, hold the ball up etc. 4-5-1 ring any bells ?? What do you want him to do?, take on 4 defenders on his own and rattle every chance into the top corner? Of course you do you numpty!

Jarvis, England international?!? Say no more, class act.

As for the crab, leave him in front of the back four, O’hara will do all the creative stuff. He breaks the play up and gets in there, what more do you want from a defensive midfielder??

£15M for Lescott? Are you mad? £5M tops and thats if we want him, he’s injury prone and when does a backward step ever work for anyone? He would have come last season if he had have wanted to.

The 3 M’s are doing a magnificent job, stop whining and show some faith and trust in the most successful managerial team at Wolves in decades.

dead wood like doyle and jarvis – the same deadwood that was linked with small clubs like arsenal and liverpool?

15mill for lescott would be nice, his 100k a week wages may be a small issue. Oh and who wouldnt want to swap the champions league for a rennegation fight! some fans need to get their head out of the clouds.

Need to move on to a left back, and a pacey forward. would like to see koncheskey / wallace, possibly dj campbell has a good record but hear he is off to QPR. struggle to come up with realistic targets to be honest! anyone have any realistic ideas?

Doyle and Jarvis deadwood?? They have been 2 of our best players over the past 2 seasons, we need to keep hold of our best players and add to them with signings like Johnson and O’Hara, which the club are doing.

Lescott is not going to come back to Wolves!!! He is on £90k a week playing for a club in the champion’s league, he is not a realistic target.

The 3ms are doing a great job like they always have done, get another CB to pair with Johnson and a left back then we are good to go!

Smart, smart business with Johnson. Upson’s odds have been shortened to 4/1 on to join us, intersting Anelka’s odds have been cut to 7/1 to leave chelsea and join us! crazy not sure I’d want that.
Love to see us have a punt on hargreaves, and we certainly need strength at left back. I’d like to see konchesky very steady, ridgwell is a risk injury free tremendous but spends so much time injured. Finally another forward to provide competition and cover not sure we’ve got quite enough with just three. Crazy prices being quoted at momment £5 million for Maynard! £10 million for long. Great transfer business so far. These signings are failsafe. R.Johnson alone should guarantee fewer goals against Wolves. I think it’s a good strategy to sort of defence first. If we keep all our players, we’ve got no “weaknesses”. Next season we can begin to spice things up a bit, because that’s all we lack – creativity. If we get our defence sorted out and Fletcher finds back to last seasons form, we should be destined for a midtable position. And if Doyle and Fletcher clicks together at the same time we could even end on the upper part of the table.

You really can’t be serious can you? Doyle is absolute top draw and Jarvis was voted as our player of the season by the fans and players including the manager. I think you must live on another world? And as for the Lescott bid, I’d love to see Lescott back in a Wolves shirt but his wages are about 90k per week. Would you honestly like to see us pay a player that much a week yet the rest of the squad on about a 3rd of that. Imagine what that would do for team morale. You carry on living in a dream world…

2-”Bob Wolf,” so we bring in Lescott, and get rid of Berra and Stearman. (Among others.) Let’s suppose Johnson and Lescott are injured or suspended, and please tell me who we will use as cover? Jody Craddock, and then who? Zubar? Elokobi? Surely you would then start / continue berating Mick playing players “out of postion.”

To call Doyle, Henry and Jarvis “Deadwood” amazes me. (Actually, it’s you, and so I shouldn’t be amazed.) Ward has proven himself to be a more than useful squad player, being able to fill in at left-back left-wing or striker.

Wonder how many people will be knocking on Mr Moxey’s door asking for a pay rise now?

I think the message for fans bodes well – assuming he finally signs (I’m worried that Brum might use this as a last gasp attempt to flush out a few extra pennies). It demonstrates that we are prepared to pay the wages for players, as befits a side playing their third consecutive season in the top flight. An extra 10K a week represents the difference between finishing 17th and 16th (given the £500K price money for each place).

Undoubtedly, there are clauses cutting player salaries if relegated whilst we have demonstrated with our signing of players from relegated teams that their loyalties lie with the premier league rather than their employers, so we would have assets for sale.

Have to admit, when you look at £20K a week for Woodgate rising to £40K if he’s playing ( league starts in 2 years I’ve been told) , it doesn’t seem so bad.

I desperately hope this happens. If it does it will be a fantastic piece of business by the Wolves. Roger Johnson has all the attributes of a top drawer centre half. Hats off to Wolves for getting this done at a sensible cost and for showing real ambition to become an established Premiership side.

Yes we still need to strengthen further but this news gives us great reason to believe that we will do.

Keep everything crossed Wolves fans for pen to paper, this is the sort of quality player that can transform our prospects.

I agree with No 2 post Bob Wolf, he is right. Doyle had a great season the season before last and I am sure we were going to sell him for £12m to a top 4 side and that’s why we got Fletcher. As for Jarvis since he became an ‘england player’ he has been poor he like Doyle has had his head turned and they both think they are better than they are. I would play Hunt and Fletcher in place of those two now overated players anyday!

Good times to be a Wolves fan right now. Once we’ve got Johnson we can get Ridgewell at left back than Dann/Tompkins for the other centre half position. I think its important to get a slightly younger bloke for the other central position. Get these three pieces in place and barring injury bad luck I am more than confident of at least 14th place.

Very difficult business chasing quality players… even this morning, we are seeing the players agent leaving the deal dangling like a carrot, to tempt late interest and a wages auction with other potential suitors

And how many goals did Mr Doyle score for us?? Fletcher is a much better striker and kept us up with his goals. Doyle is a more-expensive Andy Keogh, a headless chicken who runs down blind alleys.

No room for Jarvis on the left, and Kightly/Hammill/Guerdiora/Edwards to cover the right.

as a wolves fan for many many years it is nice to see the club in the promised land as anyone knows it is a small process to build a team especially has we have just scraped by over the last two years.
However as regards to Bob Wolf the people that react to this man are giving him exactly what he craves the attention as every body knows that jarvis, doyle and many more players in the team are not deadwood but bob still gets you people to react by doing this i wonder if every body actually ignored his comment would he actually come back on and type the drivell he puts together in 10 seconds. Now to serious note we are climbing as a club even though we are still establishing ourselves as a premier club i for one would go for lb as ridgewell and tomkins as the other ch leave upson well alone midfield what abiut mark noble from west ham and to answer about a fast striker the only one i can think of is shane long but reading are requesting 10m for him if not noble then joey barton yes he might be a gamble and might have to pay high wages but one of the main reasons newcastle did so well last season and is available for 4m

90 Petenuts. You can’t have seen many games last season. What I am saying is true. Doyle and Jarvis are not as good as they have been. I perhaps agree that thay are not deadwood like the others listed but if we are going to improve year on year the club will have to sell any deadwood and cash in on internations when good money is offered. Otherwise we will be left with 25 championship players who will work hard but we will end up in the bottom 4 every season

Once the signature is confirmed this will prove to be a real asset for us. I believe our management team has certainly delivered so far. Let us not “rush in”, let us “negotiate” properly and we will be fine. We have saved a lot of money by dealing in this way and I honestly believe we will be an extremely competent side next season, hard to beat, good football being played, and I (and I can be quoted) feel we will be mid table at the end of next season. We are Wolves. We do need another Left Back though!!

Have a look at his response in the next match at Sunderland when he came on at half time, and that sublime cross for Fletch to put us 2-1 up. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

As for Doyle, no he is not prolific, but you only have to see how much struggled for 5 games when he got injured after playing for Ireland to know what a good player he is.

I saw every home match and 7 away matches last season. One thing you fail to address; and that is the form of any sportsman. They can never be at the top of their game all the time. Take Berbatov and Rooney as high profile examples. Doyle, Jarvis and Henry all suffered a dip in form during the season, but, they are an integral part of Wolves development, to shift them out in the manner you suggest makes no sense.
Every player has a price of course, but, surely if you “cash in on internationals” in other words your better players, that’s when you will be left with 25 Championship players.
Bit by bit, year on year, with a few mistakes, MM is building a squad that can establish us a a sound Premiership club. Sorry you can’t see that and feel it necessary to agree with an attention seeker.

Hope the Johnson deal goes through, he will definately strengthen us.

(plus he backed out of a deal at wolves before).

Upson will rock the boat … no thank you !!!

    Dunne …. alongside Johnson ???
    surely a lack of pace

Tomkins … not sure … have seen he drop some terrible clangers (but what defender hasnt).

Evans … all gone quiet on that … but surely he wont get a look in at Utd this year ?

Nedum Onuoha surely would be ideal.

108 farmer ted…I agree with what you say on ‘form’ However my main point was that Flether and Hunt are better footballers than Doyle and Jarvis and if a big offer came along we should cash in. However its only my thoughts and I guess what do I know when at Sunderland I was giving George a bit of stick for more than once kicking it out when he was trying to pass it down the wing. Even our players would not pass to him as he was that bad and he then gets a goal. Also it was a great cross by Jarvis for the goal in that game much better than his normal ‘float over’

If the Johnson deal goes through (and I sincerely hope I haven’t put the kibosh on it) I think there are a few Wolves ‘fans’ who owe some apologies to our board. I can understand a few of the fans getting impatient, but there are some who have dished out dog’s abuse to Moxey, in particular, and should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.
