Dorus De Vries is backed at Wolves

Dorus De Vries has been backed to give Wolves “something different” in the battle of the goalkeepers.

The 30-year-old signed a three-year deal last week on a free transfer, replacing Marcus Hahnemann.

The Dutchman arrives as something of an unknown to Wolves fans, but certainly cemented his reputation as a heroic figure at Swansea.

In four years, De Vries won two promotions and set a club record 25 clean sheets in a season, playing more than 200 games in all competitions.

But De Vries is not your normal goalkeeper and didn’t pick up a pair of gloves until he was 15, playing as a centre-back in his school years.

Things only changed when he went along to support a friend in a national annual goalkeeping competition held in Holland. De Vries gave it a try and never looked back.

Now he attributes his formative footballing career as an outfield player to his excellent distribution skills, which has been a hallmark of Swansea’s neat possession game.

Wolves’ goalkeeping coach Pat Mountain said: “Dorus will bring something different and will be a really good addition to the department.

“Coming from South Wales, I’ve seen a fair bit of him and he’s got a great record at Swansea over the last four seasons.

“And that’s both in terms of the number of games played and the amount of clean sheets, particularly over the last two years.

“The number of clean sheets he’s kept would have been impressive in any league but particularly the Championship, where it’s so tough.”
