Wolves to play at Celtic in friendly

Wolves will play Celtic in a pre-season friendly at Parkhead next month.

The game between the clubs will take place on either Tuesday July 26 or Wednesday July 27.

It depends on which night Rangers have their Champions League preliminary round home qualifier, as Glasgow police won’t allow the Old Firm teams to play on the same night.

The Champions League draw is on July 15, so supporters will have to wait to confirm plans.

Wolves’ second successive pre-season trip north of the border sandwiches Saturday friendlies at Notts County and Ipswich.

But it’s the game at the 60,000-capacity Celtic Park, 12 months after Wolves’ 2-0 friendly win at Hearts, that will set fans’ tongues wagging.

It will also be a special night for manager Mick McCarthy, who remains a popular figure with Bhoys fans after a successful two years there as a player from 1987 to 1989, winning the Scottish double in 1988 and the Scottish Cup a year later.

Wolves played Celtic in a friendly in 1959 to celebrate the opening of the Scottish club’s flooflights. They ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Peter Broadbent and Jimmy Murray.

Any “oldies”, which Glasgow club did we play, at Molineux, pre-season, in 1961? I wasn’t there as I was working at the Victoria Hotel at the time. I’ve always thought, looking back, that it was Celtic. Perhaps it was Rangers.

Why are people getting excited about this ? Why are people not annoyed about the lack of any transfer action. It’s doing my head in now, were all going on about how we want to finish mid table this season but how with exactly the same team as last year but without Mancienne and Jones

At long last, we have organised a decent friendly. I know pre-season friendlies do not mean much but I personally want to see Wolves teams go out in any game and perform professionally – including reserve and testimonial games!
With a prestige friendly like this, I trust that Mad Mick will put out a strong side, as there are sure to be decent numbers – as normal – from the Wolves ranks!
Now let’s see if we can get the Mills deal done and dusted.

    15) Shut up moaning. Wolves have been linked with exactly the right type of players and are doing their best to get them in. We have been more active than most, as we actually have money and are not in extreme debt like others. Wolves fans are excited at this announcement, as loyal fans will be there, to see two famous British clubs in action. These games rarely happen!

There won’t be trouble guys! Glasgow on a week night is a great place to go and get a beer and watch a football match especilly at Parkhead….now if we were playing Ranger’s over in Goven….that would be a different kettle of fish for sure!!
Anyway there will be more Celtic fans looking to say hello again to Big Mick,as he is well respected by Celtic fans.
I expect a few deals to start coming through as it will be 1st July in a couple of days and lots of deals can get completed by clubs. Mills still not sure..we need Premiership quality players to bring expierience to our defence. As we have all been saying LB and 2 CB and another centre midfield creative player.

Come on, Moxey, let’s show up to Parkhead with a squad of decent players. Time to pull the trigger on a pair of defenders, a central middle and fox in the box before the end of next week, so they can all bed-in and gel with the team. Will be a great day and night out up in Glow-town! And, welcome home, of sorts, Mck! UTMW!

Interesting game for both Clubs. Have Wolves improved from last season with (hopefully) a few new faces and are Celtic (along with Rangers) good enough for the Premiership?
Okay it’s a friendly but it’s noticeable that the players both the Auld Firm clubs sign are now Championship standard.
I remember the 2-0 win against Celtic, although it didn’t really register as important at the time. The European defeat by Rangers a year or so later did though !
0-2 at Ibrox, 1-1 at Molineux and Rangers fans ‘took’ the South Bank. Very unusual in those days.
15 Billbrook. Don’t understand your impatience, you can see what we’re trying to make happen. Lots of proposed transfers are up in the air, these things take time, it’s not just Wolves. Also July 1st is the official opening of the window when contracts end. The talking’s been going on but, now the action really starts.

Bilbrookwolves your an idiot! I think the fact wolves rushed there transfers last season spoilt you. Patience! I’d rather wait till next month and sign Johnson rather than signed some other crappy championship replacement last week. The reciculous prices paid for jones and Henderson etc has inflated prices at the minute.are you telling me you’d rather we had completed all our business now even if it meant we missed out on signing quality, or would you rather we pay the blues asking price and get ourselves into debt risking the clubs future?? Everybody cares but we can see the bigger picture!!

how many teams HAVE actually made signings or even spent money this summer – not many.

we have spent 5m already, these things take time. the market is skewed, clubs look like they;ll be holding out for every last drop of blood.

gonna have to be patient this summer i’d say. besides looks like Mills will be next to me, he’s obviously no good being a Championship player.

I was of the same opinion as you and tbh I would prefer for us to spend the 10M on defenders. But this info has come off one of the wolves board of directors so I’m guessing it’s fairly reliable! But I was as surprised as you!!

    25) I would not worry about him mate, as he is probably another armchair supporter. I went to every league game last season, was at Burnden Park for the Chorley debacle and even seen us in a European final and therefore have the seen the very best and worst of Wolves. People on here think it is easy to get and get whoever and it is obviously not. The latest news, for example, is that Stoke have put a £16m offer in for Dann and Jerome and this will probably be turned down? That’s how hard it is!

would be a complete waste of time even if we could afford him.

with clubs like L’pool and Spurs in the race weve no chance. like I say we cant afford 10m on a midfielder ATM.

i’d be very surprised if we bring in another midfield player, we look OK there like you say we need 2/3 defenders.

    44)

apparently the Stoke bid for Dann and Jerome was 8m up front with 8m in add-ons. Caps, performance related etc.
