Wolves set for Craig Gardner blow

Sunderland are set to deal a major blow to Wolves summer transfer plans by winning the fight for Craig Gardner’s signature.

The Birmingham City midfielder had been one of the prime targets for Wolves boss Mick McCarthy in the club’s ‘cherry-pick’ of players from their relegated neighbours.

But Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is understood to have now lodged a £5m bid which has been accepted by Blues and, with the Black Cats offering the biggest financial package in the scramble for Gardner’s services, look set to land the signing.

It would be the second time McCarthy has suffered frustration in trying to recruit Gardner having originally wanted the player when he left his first club Aston Villa 18 months ago.

Surely you don`t believe that the 3M`S had any intention of signing any of these big name players.Look at thier record of signings, apart from O`Hara and Fletcher oh and maybe Hunt they always look for” bargains” from the lower divisions.I`m sorry but you have to pay that little bit extra thesedays,I`m not saying throw money about but pay sensible prices. You need the likes of Johnson and with such as Jonny Evans you may have a reasonable defense. When you buy you push for a player ,when you sell you have more influence and can demand that bit extra. So come on 3M`s lets get sorted sooner rather than later.

With egards to Mat Mills and Roger Johnson, if its the difference between finishing 17th and 15th, without even considering relegation its self funding to pay £10m & £4m. Its a no brainer – if they are the players that will make the difference.

I dont think we need any more central midfielders anyway. We have O’hara, Milijas, Guedioura, Henry and Edwards all vying for 2, possibly 3 positions in the middle.

Lets face it we need to sort out the defence. Once thats done we should in theory finnish comfortably mid table. The reason for this is because, with a decent defence we could play with 2 up front. Correct me if im wrong but last season we put more balls into the box than any other team, but with Doyle up front on his own, that stat is no good to us, as hes rarely in the box, but if we had Doyle and Fletcher up front, im sure our crosses into the box would have more end product, meaning more goals and more wins.

I pointed out Doyle and Fletcher up front, but i honestly dont mind any combination of our 3 main strikers, as they are all top quality prem strikers capable of getting into double figures.

This sums it up really! and is why we are going to find it difficult to improve on the field (rather than off it) 5m for gardner by todays ridiculous pricing id say is pretty fair, if we are not going to pay this price for a young player who would improve us then im sorry but we will just stay still! yes wages comes into it, ofcourse they do, but surely the first step is to get a price accepted! but moxey i guess was talking to them about peanuts! wages could have been upped instead of the stadium rebuild (as nice as that is). We can bank on us getting another couple of cheap options that are untried & turn out to be useless i.e george friend, jason shackell, berra, elokobi the list goes on!

Its simple! buy proven quality to improve on pitch!
as with all walks of life “you get what you pay for” especially at this level!

Just think after 2 seasons, the time surely is now to look upwards!

dont break the bank but break the habit of buying mediocreness on the cheap! its a false economy!

one final thought, not sure where gardner would fit in mm’s plans as there is not a cat in hells chance he would drop henry for him!

Pure speculation yet again, have the club confirmed we were ever after him? Good player, but would rather have some real quality additions in defence and perhaps look to a loan signing for midield/striker. Its going to cost big money for the defensive signings required (Bassong/Warnock calibre) and as a statement of intent it will be interesting to see who the club gets in the next couple of weeks. For £750,000 for each place higher we finish up the table, surely a bit of punt on signings/wages might be worthwhile?

Gardner can go where he wants and money always talks.
Sunderland was a club that was going into receivership not long ago,yet with some astute signings they are getting stronger, the only thing “GUARANTEED” for Gardner will be the fact he wont be getting relegated.
I would certainly ask the question of Mr.Morgan “Why are we not able too sign one or two players from europe or further a field?”
We are constantly linked with british players that are being chased by clubs who are willing to spend the neccessary pounds.
I would also like to ask how many players in recent years have we purchased and have sold them on for a profit?
Yes Sunderland buy and spend big but the players seem to increase in value when bigger clubs come in for them…So yes they are paying higher salaries and higher fees but it results in the player being sold on at a much higher fee…so considering the buying and selling of Sunderland they tend to make “MONEY”.How many players have we had an “OFFICIAL” bid for?
Therfore does it really show that the club are in the best “HANDS” with Moxey and Micko?
If we were to be relagated everything will become pear shaped and stall the “tortoise” progress being made.

So I am not one for asking why we are not spending this that and the other.I would however like the search for players to spread out a little across “EUROPE” wigan do it constantly by players for 3 million and sell them on for 10million…The players they purchase look more than just handy….So it is been done, for example we bought “HAMMIL” will he sell for 1 million profit?Did we need to buy him as he wont get to play,so the 500,000 spent on him could have been used for a better players wages who will “PLAY” along with the salary he is on….Arsenal do it regular buy some great technically gifted players for 2-3 million!!! who then are sold when they move on for a much higher return!

    10 Mick Will Save Us
Yes, I think most of us will agree we need to play 4-4-2 to score more goals and to do that we need to strengthen the defence. I would rather see us spend the majority of the budget on the back line and maybe missing out on Gardiner could be a blessing in disguise.
Don’t get me wrong, I rate Gardiner and did so when he was at Villa, but, if MM thinks Johnson and/or Mills are the solution to a leaky defence then up the offers and forget midfield/striker
    But it must realistic.
I reckon Blues are undervaluing Gardiner at £5m. However, they are being ridiculous with some of their other asking prices. Ridgewell £4m, Jerome £8m (Wot !) and Johnson £10m.

Some fans on here are good at throwing other people’s millions at the problem, which is where all this lunacy started.
Abramovich has taken over the asylum
£13m for a MANAGER ? and a novice manager at that ! With his track record for managers, why doesn’t he just do the job himself ?

Disappointing as he’s an all action midfielder who scores goals. However, given a CHANCE Milijas and Guedioura alongside O’Hara could do the same.

Henry isn’t good enough to take us to the next level. If he keeps getting picked next season ahead of those players and Ward/Berra/Stearman et al get picked too, we will always be in and around the bottom three.

Gardener may well have been a player that interested McCarthy, but that could apply to a whole host of players. Until I hear it from the manager himself, I would treat this as pure newspaper speculation. As we have just signed O’Hara, midfield is not the most urgent position to address.

I would have thought “prime targets” would be more applicable to Johnson and Mills, (where bids have been made), and maybe Evans.

Yes they will have money to spend but at a cost of having to sell there star assets and hope they can replace them with decent players which is never guaranteed for starters.

Then you also go on to say “If we were relegated everything will beocome pear shaped”….

Well i disagree, out of every bottom half prem team in the league we are one of the only clubs who could handle getting relegated without the risk of going into meltdown, thanks to tight wages a good turn over & assets woth more than what we payed for them.

Hammil we bought for next to nothing and got in early beating other teams to him, and will always be worth more than we payed for him, same goes for Doyle, Jarvis, Fletcher, SEB, HUNT, even Henry !

There’s a long way still to go. I doubt Gardener was really ever a top tr=arget for us anyway. From the very little coming out of Wolves, it’s been that our targets were fro a goalie, a midfielder, a centre back, a left back and possibly a loan striker.

Gardener was only probably a prospect if there was a problem with the deal to sign O’Hara. If he goes to Sunderland, then they’ve spent about the same money to sign him has we did for O’Hara and probably given him a hell of a lot more cash then O’Hara got from us. Age wise, skill wise I think we got a better deal. I could see him taking over the captins armband either this season or next.

I think we could get Bassong for less than Johnson and about the same as Mills, so I think that may be the better option at centre back. Konchesky, I think would be a decent signing. He didn’t get a fair crack at Liverpool and would suite our type of play over Liverpools. For a loan striker… I think if we tried for Keane it would be too much of looking into the past and could we really want to pay those wages? Sturridge or Wellbeck if either are on the loan market again would do us good.

Wolves are no longer a one man team. I like the speed at which we are getting stronger. It is solid and sure and looks to the future. Look at where we were fours years ago and where we are now. Look at any point on the last 4 years and then go back six months. Without fail you will find we are a stronger team. So don’t look at who we don’t sign. Look at how the squad shapes up in August with who we have signed. anyone can criticise individual signings we do or don’t make. More important is the shape of the squad we do have. That squad is still premier league. There are still 72 clubs below us that want to be where we are.

    31) What history? Wolves are more successful than Sunderland… fact! Sunderland have won 6 top league titles – most of them 1890′s – and 2 FA Cups. Wolves have won 3 top league titles, 4 FA Cups and 2 League Cups!
Irrespective of money that you have received for Bent and Henderson, Sunderland are in debt and Wolves are not. We will not go down but you might!

Don’t rank him to be honest!
And why do we need another mid when our problems are more at the back!
Save the cash and throw it at a decent pairing I say!

I do despair when reading some of the comments, today football is a business. First you get the basics sorted out, consolidate and then improve your product by buying better quality players.

The ignorant comments from people who have never actually managed anything in life are not helpful. All the so called expert fans who know so much more than the current owner, CEO and manager simply prove the point.

Fortunately there is a sprinkling of sensible comments from people who think before giving us the benefit of their opinions.

We all get frustrated by the apparently slow progress our team is making, but some of us realise the limitations the club operates under.

no70 Well you should not despair and should not talk down to fellow fans/customers.The time to worry would be if no one cared enough about the club to comment. It is passion that drives the support base.I have to say I find it incredulous that you talk of the limitations that the club is apparantly working under. The club has benefited from a £30million gift from its previous owner and has received television rights of approx £65 million total in the last two seasons, with another guaranteed £80m to come. Some limitation that is.
