Wolves ready to pull plug on deals

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is ready to pull the plug on major deals if they are not closed soon.

Efforts to bring defensive targets Roger Johnson and Matt Mills to Molineux have hit deadlock, with both Birmingham and Reading unwilling to drop their demands into line with what Wolves are prepared to pay.

Yesterday, chairman Steve Morgan warned clubs must ‘get real’ over their demands.

And Moxey has now revealed Wolves have sounded out other clubs so they can still strengthen their defence if they miss out on the pair.

Moxey said: “We have got feelers out to a number of clubs. So we either start getting serious now or we move on.

“We are now telling clubs to make a decision. We need to get things done and what we’re saying is ‘if you don’t want to do business, we’ll forget it and move on.’

“We’ve done one deal for a high-class midfield player who, from the vibe we’re getting within the game, will be regarded as a very astute piece of business.

“We’re also delighted to have signed a quality goalkeeper who will provide the right competition.

“But we need to concentrate on other, more pressing areas now.”

It’s obviously going to be tougher to sign players like Johnson and Gardner because there is much interest from other clubs. Clubs like Birmingham are inevitably going to want as much money as they can get from these players

On their day: Jarvis, Hunt, Fletcher, Doyle, O’Hara are as good as any players in their positions in the bottom half of the table.

A new look defence is very much needed.

This ‘take it or leave it’ stance will not get us the players we want, not so early on in the closed season. While I understand the club will not be held to ransom over their top targets I think that we have offered just about bottom level of the players price bracket in the £7M & £3M for Johnson & Mills respectively, we would probably have more joy if we were to up the bids fractionally, I don’t mean break the bank and go all silly, but a final effort on each of these players, £3.5M for Mills and £7.5M plus Berra for Johnson, give them a take it or leave it ultimatum on those deals and we’ll possibly tip the balance in our favor. Losing out on these players for the sake of half a million or so is lunacy ! If we’d have been willing to pay the right money in the first place we’d already have Johnson and Scott Dann! Come Moxey and Morgan drive a hard bargain by all means but let’s get these deals done!

If the shoe was on the other foot, and we were looking at selling off our major assets, then nobody would complain about dragging it out to try and get the best price possible.

The transfer merry-go-round is only just starting. Our problem is that Vile, Sunderland, Newcastle and Blackburn are all awash with cash from sales. Whilst they are clearly more established teams in the prem than us, this has to be seen as our competition rather than the newly promoted sides.

With our public comment that we are in the market for a couple of centre backs and prem quality players being somewhat short in supply, we run the real risk of trying to be a bit too forceful and missing out on what we really need.

    Fingers crossed anyway.

Obviously with the current financial situation Birmingham want as much as they can get for the players.

However these players were in a relegated team and although looking good in this team – are they significantly better than what we have? AND who else is going to buy them play in the Premiership or the Championship???

Remember two years ago some of us would have paid £4M for MM……. and eventually he did not even go for £2M.

Yes we do need 2 or 3 defenders but it has to be the right guys at the right price……… and they have to want to come and play here.

We’ve offered good money for these players if reports are to be believed. At some point you just need to draw a line under it & move on. If somebody else wants to hit £10million + for Johnson then let them.

Problem is we are in for players like Johnson, Mills, Gardner that are wanted by other clubs. I don’t blame Blues or Reading for wanting top dollar, it’s business, we’d be the same if the situation was reversed. Agreed we don’t want a Dutch auction situation, but if these are the players we want, our top priority, then we are just going to have to be patient and negotiate. In fairness Blues are going to have to sell anyway so that in itself will bring a focus to doing business with them.

In the meanwhile I console myself with the thought that the centre half partnership for most of last season was Berra and Stears, which was good enough to bring us to 32 points from 30 played, before we hit the wall eight games prematurely.

Whoever we bring in needs to be adding something to the squad and needs to be exposed to a full preseason training program. Our team needs to hit the ground running this time around and the first couple of games gives us a chance to make a good start.

Some of the figures being floated for Johnson, Mills etc seem overblown given their age and experience. it’s the world we live in and points to the Club putting more effort in identifying young talent and bringing them through a sound Academy program. We should pay a premium for top coaching to improve our reserve squad. McClaren is not everyones cup of tea but what he did for Middlesborough has generated a lot of talent. If that can be achieved in a backwater like Teeside why can it not be accomplished from the second major conurbation in England????

This is how transfers are done nowadays – we have made genuine offers for 2 playes for probably slightly less than we are really prepared to go – Birmingham have put a totally unrealistic price on Johnson and Reading are getting what they can for an unproven PL player – both offers are rejected as is always the case with any first offer – now we do a bit of cajoling the press to put it out that we won’t be held to ransom and the 2 clubs need to think on, now we will hear again that the players involved have attracted interest from a number of clubs trying to force Wolves to up the offer or carry out the threat of looking elsewhere…. we will almost certainly now go back in with a slightly improved offer and if that’s not accepted by the clubs involved do what we say and move on. You should never make more than 2 offers otherwise it looks like you’re a bit desperate unless the player is an absolute world beater , – we are of course assuming the players involved actually want to come to Wolves -

Quite rightly Jez Moxey is upping the ante with the respective clubs. If you take the dialogue that is mentioned in this article at face value, it is no more than simply putting presure on B’ham and Reading.

Negotiation is all about compromise, unless one side has no other option. I believe that B’ham is in a far more perilous financial position than Reading, and maybe forced to reduce their asking price nearer to what Wolves (or others) are offering.

Reading are in a better position to hold onto Mills if he signs a new contract. If the player decides he wants to move on, then this may well prompt Reading into a deal.

In any event it would be naive to think that there are’nt alternatives which Wolves have in mind, which maybe better than Johnson and Mills.

We haven’t spent that so if a player fits the team profile and MM thinks its the answer to our defensive problems then pay what’s being asked before someone else does; don’t buy someone else because he’s cheaper.

We go to the showroom and extract a price from the salesman. It’s too high so we attempt to talk him down whilst he tries to talk us up.It’s called negotiation.Hopefully we can reach an agreement at not a lot above our budget but if not we walk away and go for our second choice and the process starts all over again.

This is all tactics to hurry Birmingham and Reading along, I’m confident we will get our men! I personally feel that Birmingham willbe the next ‘big’ club to go into administration. I have no faith in the owners at club at all. If I’m right, then it’s no wonder they are holding out for more money… They will drop the price eventually when nobody is interested
Maybe offer the same price that has already been offered with a clause which ensures an extra payment of £1m if we finish above 15th AND Johnson plays at least 30 games???

@31 Peter .. Granted I’ve never had much of a poker face! But then again I’m not leading the negotiations!
@45 Mick will sAve us ( I hope) your right I don’t know what we’ve officially offers but neither do you my friend, I’d say the express and star would have a better idea than any of us seeing ad they are probably in daily contact with the Wolves press officer.
I just think if Mick has identified these as his top targets ( which he obviously has some time ago) and Moxey and co have agreed to try and land them then 3 weeks into the closed season is a bit soon to write off any chance of signing them cos no agreement has been made yet? And then what I was saying is maybe a final offer ever so slightly higher than what has already been made might just seal the deal? What’s wrong with that?

JB-56…I agree with 49-jaundice eye with regard to our super hero, kevin doyle.
Take a look at what is happening at Wolves and then have a real good look at yourself.
Wolves have just signed Jamie O’hara ( the future) for 5 years, whereas, kevin doyle( the past) languishes on 2 years at the moment.
Yes we all read that Wolves are attempting to shore up doyle by extending his contract…its not going to happen.
Wolves want to shore him up to increase his possible transfer value on the market, there is no way doyle will lock himself into an extended contract while he is not first choice striker for Wolves.
Watch this space, along with the likes of Karl henry, kevin doyle I predict will display unrest before the start of the season and be up for grabs.
Wolves will want what they paid for him at least but I believe that will be unlikely considering the ‘ordinary’ season he had with Wolves. He, i believe will go back to the Championship where he will excel in lower grade football.
when one watches the like of steven fletcher, a true striker, how can you compare him with such a player, and now jamie O’hara, poor kevin doyle is very much on the outer.

watch this space for the news

Boingboing – It doesn’t work like that for many Wolves fans on here. They’d walk into a car showroom with a budget, then feel like they had to spend over that budget or else it would be a sign of a lack of ambition !!

are you an idiot? doyle is still our best player and to even suggest that he may be going to the championship is a joke. he is a premier league player without doubt and it would be great if we can get him tied to a new deal. in what you call an ‘ordinary season’ he still played a vital role and was 2nd in player of the season votes

64 Robert Perry. As we look forward to a 3rd successive season in the premier league, and financially sound, I certainly hope Moxey does his usual thing.

Because it is the RIGHT thing.

70 – obviously many things are a matter of opinion. However if your opinion is that Kevin Doyle is not a top class footballer then it is not worth reading.

Why should other teams answer you? You made an offer, they have refused that offer. Isn’t that enough of an answer?

As Mick has said, the players have two values that have to be met. What the buying team wants to pay for them and what the selling team is willing to accept to sell them.
I don’t think Birmingham have gone cap in hand asking Wolves to buy any of their players so stop making stupid comments, Jez and Steve.

Kevin Doyles a striker – A striker who dosnt score, he holds the ball up well = Great whoopee, why dont we improve the rest of the team instead with the money from him so we dont have to rely on a non scoring ball holder uppper?

Johnson & mills would be excellent players for us I’m sure,at the right price, but the way things are going we won’t get either & settle for second best from our feeder club, sunderland. Come on me babbies utmw.

73 you are spot on.Doyle is one of the few players we possess who is premiership quality.72,Grace NO true Wolves fan wants us to go the way of Leeds etc.HOWEVER we have been very lucky to stay in the premiership the last two seasons and we need to invest in quality players. I am sick and tired of people criticising the likes of myself who dare to suggest the club show no ambition whatsoever and are frightened to recruit experienced premiership players.

Some of the Wolves fans on here are total buffoons!
    i) Kevin Doyle PLUS £4m for Johnson? What? Doyle is a regular International for an Ireland side that is currently more successful than England and a well respected manager like Trappotoni thinks of him as one of his first choices. Blues would have to give us money!
ii) Kevin Doyle is no better than a Championship player? Yeah right!
iii) One of the reasons that we are strengthening the defence and possibly midfield is so that we can play two upfront in most games and Doyle and Fletcher are our best two, with SEB waiting in the wings!

Sorry disagree, 1st year we stayed up comfortably & last year we got 40 points, which, as we all know has only failed once to retain premership status & most years is good enough 15th – 16th spot.

As for showing no ambition last year we spent £18m & will probably spent a similar amount this year which for a club of our size, does show ambition, also for the first time I can remember the club actually have players that have a resell value.

So in terms of ambition who would you like to see struting their stuff around Compton this pre-season??
