McLeish’s exit halts Wolves’ moves

Wolves fear a potentially costly fall-out of Alex McLeish’s walk-out on Birmingham.

Manager Mick McCarthy has targeted several Blues players including Roger Johnson, Scott Dann and Craig Gardner to improve his squad in the wake of the St Andrew’s club’s relegation.

An approach has already been made for Johnson and talks are continuing to land the 28-year-old defender, while McCarthy is keen to land his central defensive partner Dann, who also he tried to sign two years ago, as well as Gardner.

But should McLeish eventually be appointed Villa’s new manager, Wolves fear the Scot may have already told the trio to ‘sit tight’ and wait for him to pitch up elsewhere, therefore scuppering their plans.

Sunderland, armed with cash following the £24million sale of Darren Bent and £20million Jordan Henderson, have reportedly bid for both Johnson and Gardner, while Liverpool are thought to be interested in Dann as they stock up on homegrown players.

But Wolves, whose chief executive Jez Moxey revealed yesterday he is working on “a couple” of deals that are not for centre-halves, are quietly confident of landing their prime targets.

They are also monitoring Villa’s Richard Dunne, a long-term favourite of McCarthy’s.

In addition, Wolves are putting the finishing touches to the £5million signing of Jamie O’Hara from Tottenham.

Dunne – a very bad idea. That’s all I’m saying.

I would k=like to see on eof the centre backs buts gardner, im not so sure. Yes, no doubt he’s a decent player, but not sure if he’s worth the money (about £5m) when he’s only a little improvement on what we’ve got. Rather spend the money elsewhere in the team. as everyone has stated all season, left back, two centre backs. Any as i havent seen some of our new young strikers (the new lad from Dundee) maybe a good young back up striker.

Positive rumors being thrown about. Let’s see what happens. In 3M’s we trust.

Who at Wolves fears that “the Scot may have already told the trio to ‘sit tight’ and wait for him to pitch up elsewhere.”?

Where’s the qualification of that statement?

Sounds like no news coming out of Molinuex today to me.

Then again, not having taken the tablets this morning it also sounds like it was one big conspiracy “Tell the fans we target Johnson, then find any excuse not to bother, and tell the fans at least we went for him”.

    Medicine please nurse.

Is it just me or is anyone else thinking the same, one they are ex championship players, two Blues went down this season ???? why is it a big deal if we dont get them. Im more worried about getting O’hara signed up and possibly a couple of proven centre backs. Not ones that have had 1 maybe 2 seasons with a relegated club.

I think if Mcleish ends up at villa Johnson could follow him there.I don’t think he is worth more than 7million.we could then get a cut price deal on dunne which wouldn’t be bad.if the bassong rumour is true and he is interested in wolves sign him up now!

4 – Blues didn’t go down because of a poor defence though. They went down because they didn’t score any goals. The only reason they did as well as they did was because of how strong they were at the back…….. contrast that to our defensive record last year, it’s easy to see why those players have become targets.

I doubt if we would get Johnson in anycase, as we will be outbid! Scott Dann is going to Liverpool or Arsenal, I suspect. We definitely have a chance with Gardner and £5m is the right sort of fee, for someone who was Blues top scorer last season.
Dunne – no thanks. Totally lost his pace and Jody would be quicker. Bassong – yes. Mills – untried in the Premiership.
    Finally get O’Hara’s wages sorted!

I have to say I don’t think we would miss any of these players too much if we didn’t get them. I’d like to see us get O’Hara and Lukman Haruna (who looks like a real Unit with quality) in the midfield and in defence Matt Mills and Bassong who might even be able to cover left back a little bit aswell. A goalkeeper (Kieron Westwood) may be useful aswell. The only issue with Bassong and Haruna may be that if an African Cup of Nations happens we could be a bit short given Big George and Adlene could be called up too.

However, unless we can get them cheap I don’t think we need the Blues players who couldn’t keep their team up last year anyway.

Stephen Hunt’s goal has had far reaching effects, not the least being the salary of Alex McLeish (£1.6m pa) sliced in half because of a relegation clause. This has now resulted in the mayhem that’s going on between Blues & Villa. However it would appear that another problem McLeish faced was the forced exodus of his best players. Unlike the E&S I think the Carsen Yeung board will sell quickly to the highest bidders to try and recoup some of their irresponsible spending over the last twelve months. They are already preparing the way by signing Championship players like “Hit Me Baby One More Time ”
I feel sorry for Blues fans (not the idiots, we’ve all got them). The poor sods are watching their Club fall apart.
Hands up all those who are glad they are Wolves supporters (especially those who remember the balti brothers era)

    The Usual Suspects

Imv RJ leaving Blues bears no reflection on whether Blues have or have’nt got a manager
Wasnt it the case that Blues were having a clear out anyway and that these players want out because they want Premiership football?

Rumours are that Bassong from Spurs (apparently a reliable source on his tweeter page) is a target for Wolves

Personally not worried in the slightest if RJ comes or not as long as we bring in better than we have and Bassong can play at left back and centre half alledgedly

    Up the Wolves!
