Jody Craddock nets new Wolves deal

Jody Craddock has won his battle for another year’s contract at Molineux.

Manager Mick McCarthy has confirmed his ‘old reliable’ Craddock will be kept around for a ninth season after the 35-year-old’s vital input to the closing stages of the Premier League survival quest.

The news continues one of the most durable and popular careers by a Wolves player in modern times and will delight the popular Craddock, who was hoping to stay on for another season despite an injury-hit campaign.

“Jody had really struggled with that hip injury, perhaps more than people realised, but he came back into the side towards the end to great effect,” said McCarthy.

“He scored a goal at Sunderland and made a terrific contribution.

“He placed great faith and trust in the physios and he’s now as fit as anybody.

“He never asks for a day off, he’s in for tennis before training and remains a fine example to everyone at the club.

“But this is not a contract out of sentiment.

“He is a top player still as we saw at the end of the season – in the last few games his performances were as good as anyone.

“Everything about him is still valued highly here – his professionalism, he is someone that everyone looks up to in the way he conducts himself. He’s a very humble guy.”

Craddock has proved to be one of the club’s most consistent figures and earned a tribute, too, from chief executive Jez Moxey.

He said: “Given what Jody has done this past year, he is worth a new deal.

“He brings more to the club than what we see out on the pitch as well with his leadership and his professionalism and stability.

“He is everything Wolves are about these days. He’s very much a Wolves man now and his value to the club extends beyond what he gives to the team.”

Craddock’s late-career revival at Molineux has been one of the wonders of the modern age.

McCarthy was all set to dispense with his services four years ago but, with his team struggling during the manager’s second season, Craddock was recalled from a loan at Stoke City to return to Wolves duty.

Since then, he has played a starring role both in winning the Championship title and retaining Premier League status last season.

* Michael Mancienne was in Hamburg today, sealing a £3m move.

The Chelsea defender, who has spent the last three seasons on loan at Molineux, has decided to move abroad to further his footballing education after the Blues gave the green light to a sale.

“Hamburg get 50,000 every home game and my first job is to help them get in the Champions League,” Mancienne said. “It’s a very exciting move.”

As much as I like Jody as a player and leader I think his legs have gone – this is not the kind of signing I was hoping for. We need 2 new centre backs if we are to avoid the struggles of the last two seasons – JC is not the answer. Johnson and Dunne would be my targets but then what do I know! A proper left back would be handy as well. Milias and Berra should be shown the door behind Jones and Mancienne – and lets just hope someone is willing to take the Hoff and Keogh off our hands. I think we should targets players like Gardener Ridgwell Hitzelsburger and DJ campbell to give us a better squad – but I fear a summer of near misses in the transfer market and we will be left with a very similar looking squad – prepare for another season of struggle, folks!

Jody deserves a testamonial when he does retire because he epitomises what we want at Wolves, a never say die attitude and a real love of the club, he might not play many games this coming season if we make the right signings but his presence around the place will be invaluable.
We must hurry up and sign O’Hara and then several other defenders and a midfielder and perhaps a class forward. glad to see Mancienne gone and hopefully a number of other makeweights will go clearing the way for some real premier signings. There is no substitution for class, in the second half of the Blackburn game we had O’Hara and Hunt running the show for us and the fact that Hunt did not want to celebrate but to hurry up and get on with the game showed a real professionalism that we badly needed. We must sort out the captain issue as well with both of these players again in the frame, they both talk to their team mates as well as get stuck in.

Good news, for Jody and everyone involved with Wolves. Lets now bring in two more top CH’s swap Berra for Bougherra, then bring in either Johnson,Dann,Dunne,Cueller? And get O’Hara’s contract sorted before another club comes and pinches him, and also go and get Shane Long now Reading didnt get promotion he would give us four very good strikers. And sort out once and for all who’s going to play LB regular this coming season? Plus it looks like we may need a back-up GK ,Westwood of Coventry would be ideal. And clear the deadwood out.UTW:

The last three games showed the players we should retain in attack and midfield and quite frankly with Ebanks and Volkes in the wings, I for one cannot see a place next season for Kevin Doyle, and believe we should sell him on.

He is a very good footballer, has a good football brain, runs all day, and is a good team player…however, a striker he is not,far too light, too small, and reluctant to use his head, can we really afford to keep such a highly paid player on the books when Fletcher looks to be the no.1 choice.

I think we will sign at most 4 players including O’hara. Possibly a loan signing or 2 added on to that aswell. We have already got rid of Jones, Mancienne, Hanhemann, and probably Bia aswell, so i think there will be more than enough room in the squad for Craddock. What we are getting with Craddock, is someone that knows this cub inside out, someone that knows the players around him well, someone with ample experience, and a true professional setting a great example to our younger players. For that i think the extension for Jody is a great thing, and i truly hope that if he decides to take up coaching, he does so at this great club.

Mills from Reading is probably worth a punt But inreality is he any better than Myokolo?
Someone mentioned selling Doyle??? No way! If we can get our defence and midfield sorted Doyle could be a great partnership with Fletcher

We have Berra and Myokolo at the club – Why not Part Ex these plus Cash for Johnson and Dann? Im sure they could do a good job for Blues in the Championship? Westwood from Coventry aparently is rumoured in one of the tabloids

Carlton Cole has had one decent season which caused every one to rave about him. His attitude means he is a definate no for me, but I would honeslty say that we have 3 strikers already who are better than he is. If we do end up buying another forward, i would hope that we continue in our pursuits of a talented youngster like that griffiths, We arent really going to get anyone better than what we already have for under £10 million, so a youngster with the potential to be the next Rooney could be a good shout.

As for the need of a defender, Experience Leadership and quality are the 3 main traits im hoping we will be looking for in a defender. That means i think we should be looking at no less than £3 million on a new defender. As well as possible loan signings or free transfers.

Jody Craddock has served Wolves well but Wolves need two quality central defenders. My fear is that the off field activity ambition to increase the capacity will limit the transfers or ability to attract good players due to wage demands.

We also need a left back and at least two more midfielders, plus replacements for Doyle and Jarvis should they go, which is likely.

Being 5 minutes away from relegation and surviving is down to sheer luck and reliance on other teams to be poorer than us.

I’ll be watching to see who the 3M’s bring in and if they do not bring in quality, we’ll not survive again. We ought really be looking to sign players of the caliber that Tony Pullis seems to sign at Stoke. Playing Foley in centralmidfield and Ward everywhere is not the answer.

Changing the subject, I’ve been pretty negative about Stephen Ward and haven’t changed my mind about him not being PL quality. However, I’m sure he doesn’t ask to be played all over the place. That is MM’s choice, but I cannot criticize SW on his effort, it has been 100% in every single match in all positions. I never thought I would say this but he is probably my player of the season.

This is not a decision borne out of sentiment. He reminds me of David Weir, who at 41 is playing on for Rangers. What Jody does better than our other centre halves is read the game. Admittedly he does get done for pace sometimes, but does this well away from goal, and if needs be is cute enough to take his man out again well away from goal.

What most people are failing to appreciate is the off-the-field influence in the dressinbg room and training ground. That role model influence is huge when it comes to impressionable young players and older players lacking in confidence.

If I was the club I would ask him to take on coaching duties to supplement his 4th choice centre half role next year.

Can I just ask what justification anyone has for calling for the sacking of Terry Connor. He must be one of the longest servants of the club and has been retained by a succession of managers who actually work with him every day, so might have more evidence to judge from. He is continually thanked by players who have improved their technique, which is his job – not first team tactics. 52 Sean Wolf. No, sorry, I mean’t Frankie Vaughan purveyor of tripe like ‘Garden of Eden’ and ‘Green Door’ … until Elvis Presley and Stan Cullis changed the world forever.

Incidentally, the Summer window opens in UK (quote) “end of season – August 31st”. Okay, this can be construed a number of ways. I’m guessing after the Championship play-off, but I could be wrong. That means May 31st was within the transfer window. Where June 1st came from I ain’t sure.

    WHOOPIE DOOOO

    Are they trying for a new Premier League record, the one Derby holds of least pionts in a season? This ‘signing’ appears yet again to show no ambition other than ‘let’s see how little we can spend and stay-up’ attitude that Morgan appears to hold;
    Take out the 12 points that they got out of the top teams by luck and WWFC would have been down by Easter; losing 6 points to the next two worst teams above WWFC, losing 5 points to the bottom club, how bad were WWFC in truth; They stayed up by luck, not judgement, McCARTHY is not a Prem level manager and neither are all but 4 players;
McCarthy should have gone on the day after the lucky escape; Morgan needs to spend, spend spend, on 3 defenders of Scott Dann quality, 2 Midfielders of Scott Parker quality and a striker of Bent quality so ensuring WWFC have at least 5 more years in the top flight; Get rid of everyone except Fletcher,Hennessy,Foley,Hunt,Jarvis,Hammil,Guidierra,Doyle and the promising youth players; Lean and mean, not cheap and tryers!

i think keeping jody on is vital. We defend better with him in the side and he chips in with a goal or two .I’m sure he wont play every game but even on the bench he is a good asset
Its also a sign that Mick realises that stearman and berra are not good enough. i expect one or both to go.
Mick must sign a couple of new central defenders.
As for Michael Mancienne he is one of few loan signing we have had who was fully committed and always gave his best, where ever he played.
