Mancienne to finalise Hamburg deal

MICHAEL MANCIENNE is due in Germany tomorrow to finalise a £3m deal engineered by Hamburg's ex-Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen.

MICHAEL MANCIENNE is due in Germany tomorrow to finalise a £3m deal engineered by Hamburg's ex-Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen.

Mancienne has spent the last three seasons on loan at Wolves but, after a disappointing campaign last time around, the defender returned to Stamford Bridge with no prospect of a permanent move to Molineux.

And with Chelsea ready to cash in on the England Under-21 man, Hamburg have made their move.

Manager Mick McCarthy has lined up more experienced defenders in the summer with Blues' Roger Johnson topping his wish-list.

Meanwhile, Wayne Hennessey today offered his thanks to senior team-mate Marcus Hahnemann amid mounting evidence of major changes on the way at Molineux this summer.

Veteran keeper Hahnemann, currently with the US national team, is expected to claim a free transfer exit out of the club after Hennessey reclaimed the starting position last season.

Chief executive Jez Moxey was back at his desk today after a short post-survival break to deal with the outstanding issues.

And Hahnemann's future will be prime among them with the veteran keeper keen to now chase a starting spot elsewhere following Hennessey's re-emergence last season.

Hennessey claims to be in the dark about his senior colleague's plans but, with reports that Preston keeper Andy Lonergan is already being lined up as a replacement, he said: "Marcus has been a massive help to me over the season.

"As goalkeepers we are all very close and support each other whoever is in the team. Everything happened so quickly at the end of the season and I know a lot of things weren't going to be sorted out until we knew where we were.

"Whatever happens with Marcus he has been a big help to me and I'm sure I'll stay in touch with him."

Hennessey put the seal on his season with a final appearance for the Welsh in the Carling Nations Cup on Friday but now feels firmly re-established as Wolves' first-choice after Hahnemann stepped in to take up the role the previous season.

"I've enjoyed the season. I managed to win the place back in the team and once I'd played a few games I felt I'd found my standard again and felt really good," he said.

mick will save us (I hope)

Wayne really needs to sort out his aurthority with the defence in front of him. If he could do that, theres no doubt we could stop a number of goals being conceded. He is still a baby in goal keeping terms and has plenty of time to further improve his game, but theres no doubt that if he can get a voice to go with his superb shot stopping, he could be world class for us. Maybe a new or additional goalkeeping coach is needed to improve that area of Waynes game.

As for Marcus, he has done well for us, and even though technically he wasnt as good as Wayne, his age clearly showed as he was definately better at commanding his area. Good luck to him, wherever he finds himself next season.

Quality keeper please not another one for the future!

Thank god he's not signing on a permanent transfer but all the best to him

Interesting to see andy lonergan being linked but don't see why we need another keeper when we got ikeme as backup

Also interesting to see Henry linked with Newcastle

Would like to see Johnson Ohara williams Billy jones n Scott sinclair come in what people think

If I recall correctly, Chelsea were asking £4 for Mancienne this time last year. Jez Moxey wisely, in my opinion, refused to pay that much. Played some useful games for Wolves as a defensive midfielder but he's not what we need at the moment. Still, best of luck to the lad.

Thanks for Mancienne's efforts but it was clear to see with the final games - mistake at Blues, run ragged against Blackburn - that it was the right move not to sign him. I would like Roger Johnson or Scott Dann but think we might struggle, as other bigger spenders will be in!

Poorthonrs ONLY 18,000 home fans

Brilliant news about MM because it means I don't have to see the headless chicken in a wolves shirt again. Shocking defender and I'm delighted to hear this news. FWAW

Mills Wolf

Big thanks to any of the lads who pulled a Wolves shirt in the season, but have moved or moving on.

Just hope we replace these player who are leaving with better players not just like for like.

No penny pinching now Mr. Moxey

John De Wolf

If Man City are still interested, I'd swap Hennessey for Given plus cash. I think he makes too many mistakes and he's got at least another 5 years before he peaks and we need someone now as defence is our weakest area.

Other keepers to go for: Friedel, Westwood, Gilkes, Foster

Hamburg are a top team and they must see something in him, good luck to ya Mancienne, served us well for the years gone by

Wolf at gate

Mancienne could have made a very good left back for £3 million. Looks like Hamburg have spotted something we have missed !

the magic wanderer

I wish Mancienne all the best, I think he was a good player but as a centre back not solid enough. Hennessy is a good keeper for his age and a good shot stopper but I think we need a more experienced keeper who has a more commanding presence. Given would be a great signing, though we would be lucky to get him. Brad friedel, David James and Edwin van der sar have all shown quality keepers can play into their late thirties.

good luck to him,he`s going to be a good player but isnt yet the finished article.

we cant afford to have someone learning his trade when we are struggling to cope with the premiership.

Good luck Mancienne and many thanks Marcus. We MUST sort the defence out next season it is a priority. Also give Bath more chances in 1st team.

Players in and out for me

INS : Roger Johnson, O Hara, Lescott (season long loan), Charlie Adam, Shane Long, Christopher Samba, Jerome

Out : Mancienne, Halford, Mujangi Bia, Hannemman, Berra (rangers), Jones, Dave Edwards, Karl Henry (Newcastle or QPR), Sam Vokes, Moyokolo, Mairhoffer.

angry wolf

We must keep Hannerman, quality keeper needed as backup for Hennersey.

Well make sure you dont do in the past transfer windows and leave it too late, get Roger signed now before someone else offers him another 5 grand a week!!!

if its all pie in the sky then tell the fans, we deserve a little respect.

3 million lol i wonder if they have money to spend should of mouykolo and Berra for 6 mill I'm glad we ain't taking him on for 3 mill I'm just hoping we land Roger Johnson and it's not just a smoke screen for a Curtis Davies or an upson who don't get me wrong or gud players but they are injury prone

When are we going to hear about jamie signing?

Winslow wolf

Hasnt ended up being the player he looked like he could be

The Flying Winger

Mancienne turned out to be a disapointment after some good games early on in his loan period he has really struggled and more so since his injury.

With better coaching and if he had been given a settled role then who knows.

I am lookimng forward to seeing Hennesey play with a more accomplished defence in front of him, which he hasn't had for the last two seasons, should this happen and he can command his area better then we could have one of the best keepers in the PL as confidence will breed confidence.

However coaching will also play large part in whether he steps up to the plate.

Moxey at his desk on Bank Holiday Monday?

Begs the question-is he putting a shift in or going the extra mile?

Dave Webb

Showed potential & gained England recognition, BUT as failed to show consistancy.

I for one, am glad we're not signing him.

Filthy Wolf

Mancienne? Thanks but I think we are well shot of him. No surprise he has gone abroad as there cannot be a lot of interest in the UK.

I'm surprised M Mancienne is considering Hamburg. My instincts suggested that he would probably not be signed by us. He has given good value over the loan periods with Wolves and he will always be appreciated for that. But I saw him staying in England, with possibly QPR (where he was previously on loan) as a destination - especially as it is a London club near his home. Good luck, where ever you go, Michael - and heartfelt thanks for your contribution. Hamburg didn't do Keegan any harm!

True Wolf

ooooohhhhhhhh noooooooo!!!!!!! Not Hennessey, he is the worst we can have! This is gonna cost us next season for sure. He is so hopeless and is the key reason we ended up so far down. The kid has no control of the box and more so the respect of the back four. He pulls off so many saves as he lets the opposition get into the box. He's meant to the the extra pair of eyes for the back line....!!! NO NO NO, Hanneman should have stayed - far superior but Muppet picks his favorites! I'm gutted.

I hear Dave Jones is also available as a manager!

ron jeremy

Frank Arnesen deserves the freedom of wolverhampton !!!

Roy Carter

never mind the mancienne deal why has everything gone quiet on the signing of o'hara

Wolves Mick

Thanks to Michael Mancienne for giving us glimpses of his true potential and being loyal to the Wolves cause. I am thankful in a way that he has found a new club as he just doesnt quite have what we need at Wolves right now - dependable and solid defensive qualities. Good luck to Marcus too - dodgy early days with us - but proved vital at times in the quest for us to stay up. Moving on now Wolves - just like we should be ;-)

Edinburgh Wolf

Not good enough for the Premier League thank God we didn't get mugged off for £3 million. Go and get Robert Green that will be a great back up AND give some much needed back up when Wayne has his drop in form mid way through the season, if not before.

Staffs Wolf

I must say this came around quickly and for much less money than greedy Chelski were going demand from us! Why haven't we signed Jamie O'Hara yet? I thought the deal had to be done by the end of last week?? If we miss out on him a number of us will be seriously hacked off. I would love to see us make an audacious £10 million bid for Johnson AND Dann.

I hope we will move quickly on any potential deals like we have done before to steal a march on our rivals. I would also like to see some kind of a deal for Kyle Naughton who can play both full back positions and will be an England regular some day soon. He has a lot more potential than either of Warnock or Konchesky.

Henners, well done on a solid season. At times it lpoked like a turkey shoot out there, your d-men going spare a lot of the time, and you keeping Wolves' chances alive with some clutch saves, non bigger than the second half dive, stab and clear of Foley's botched marking of ex-Wolves, Jason Roberts, who you saved magnificently! Chewy is a fine senior pro, so you had the best at your back, pushing you all the way. Marcus, if you are reading this, get yourself to Quest Field sometime soon, so you can push Seattle Sounders a bit further, to claim their first ever MLS title! Thanks for all you did at the Old Gold and Black! UTMW!

Andy Lonergan for USA - are we having a pre-season laugh!

Colin Peppiatt

Very pleased Mancienne won't be at Wolves next season. He was awful in 09/10 and 10/11. Not sure about Andy Lonergan as No2 goalie though. You don't want a keeper who never amounted to anything as your No2. If we're shopping in League One we'd be better off signing Charlton's Rob Elliot. He's a very good keeper and would be able to pressure Hennessey for the shirt. Competition is healthy.

thank goodness mancienne is not staying, now Henry next please to many mistakes, adds loads of pressure to an already shaky defence.great back passer though.we where lucky this time,we need some more quality in defence.hope its not another season like last.uthw

angus borders

Mancie good luck at hamburg, you are sure to score more than once at the reeperbahn ground.

Old Golds Worth More

Good luck to MM at Hamburg, and also to USA where ever he ends up. Last close season we got in quick and had all our transfer business done and dusted in the first few weeks, hope the same is going to happen again before the rest start sniffing around our transfer targets. Already there is talk of Sunderland coming in for Roger Johnson, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone else makes an enquiry to Spurs about O'hara. As to a back-up goalkeeper then Green from West Ham would do nicely for me (though I thought Ikeme wasn't bad, so whats happening there?), whether they would let him go though is another matter. If Henry goes to Newcastle as some people on here seem to think might happen (I havent seen or heard anything about that), then we should get in quick for Reo-coker as a natural replacement.

Mark C

Thanks Michael, good luck. Look forward to seeing you playing for England as you certainly will.

truckin wolf

Thanks Michael and good luck but its time to clear out the dead wood and I think moxey knows that. If he doesn't I'm sure morgan will be telling him. I think we'll have a good summer transfer wise and this will lead to a more successful season

chris hoggard

A belated well done to all at Wolves.I never thought we would have 3 consecutive seasons in the Prem given our transfer policy and wage structure. Massive achievement by Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor. Those wanting Johnson and Dann can forget it,we missed the bus two years ago.More like we will end up with Mills from Reading.

no24 Of course Jez is at his desk,he gets paid double time on a Bank Holiday.

Bob Wolf As well as Dave Jones,I hear Paul Ince is available.

Brummie Rob.Have you dished out for that bottle of wine yet,to Pete Nuts? You could always double or quits for next season, with 3 coming up 35 points might well be alright for next season.

Farmer Ted

18 I think it is you who should learn a little respect.

The board have always conducted negotiations behind closed doors...or haven't you been bothered to concentrate ?

We are not the only ones who will be interested in Roger Johnson we have to persuade him Wolves are the right club for him for both ambition and salary. And the poster who suggested we make a £10m bid for both Johnson and Dann ! What planet have you been on for the last few weeks ? Carson Yeung has put a £10m minimum value on EACH!

For the impatient ones wondering when O'Hara will sign. The window opens tomorrow.

6 Jay Jay. You think we should be the only Premiership team to start the new season with only two goalkeepers ?

Finally, thanks Michael Mancienne. Good luck at Hamburg

Cuddly Dudley

43. Chris, Havin' a pop at my mate Jez and the transfer window hasn't even opened yet !

He was in over bank holiday 'cos he's got a new hi-viz jacket with his name on it and he wanted to be out on site organising the deliveries of Ready-Mix for the new North Bank.

I'm sure he'll get the players on Mick's wanted list at the right prices and wages.

Pity Mcleish and his cohorts didn't do the same when they signed Johnson, Dann & Co.

The Birmingham City red hot potato list !!

Out of Darkness

I like what was mentioned above, Mancienne could have potentially been a good investment as a left back.

And for everyone wondering why we havent signed o'hara yet, is because he's sunning himself playing golf and when he comes back will sign. Couldnt sign him until tomorrow anyway when the window opens, so deal has been done provisionally until he comes back.

Just seen on bbc sport he will be going to hamburg for 2mil euros (£1.75 mil) that maybe because it is an ex chelsea guy trying to buy him and its not an english club.........but surely at that price he is worth a punt ?!?!?

He is still young and can improve + i can't think of many better players for that prce considering he can cover most defensive positions and defensive mid

Ye Olde South Bank

Shame about Mancienne flopping at Wolves. For a short time -in the Championship, at least- I thought we were possibly witnessing the emergence of another Lescott. However, the top flight found him out.

Truth is, Mancienne became a liability, so no surprise we weren't interested. However, I wish him good luck for the future and thank him for his efforts.

I too had great hope for Mancienne , when he came he was great, didn't quite work out but thanks Micheal for all your efforts...
