Mancienne to finalise Hamburg deal

Mancienne to finalise Hamburg deal

MICHAEL MANCIENNE is due in Germany tomorrow to finalise a £3m deal engineered by Hamburg’s ex-Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen.

Mancienne has spent the last three seasons on loan at Wolves but, after a disappointing campaign last time around, the defender returned to Stamford Bridge with no prospect of a permanent move to Molineux.

And with Chelsea ready to cash in on the England Under-21 man, Hamburg have made their move.

Manager Mick McCarthy has lined up more experienced defenders in the summer with Blues’ Roger Johnson topping his wish-list.

Meanwhile, Wayne Hennessey today offered his thanks to senior team-mate Marcus Hahnemann amid mounting evidence of major changes on the way at Molineux this summer.

Veteran keeper Hahnemann, currently with the US national team, is expected to claim a free transfer exit out of the club after Hennessey reclaimed the starting position last season.

Chief executive Jez Moxey was back at his desk today after a short post-survival break to deal with the outstanding issues.

And Hahnemann’s future will be prime among them with the veteran keeper keen to now chase a starting spot elsewhere following Hennessey’s re-emergence last season.

Hennessey claims to be in the dark about his senior colleague’s plans but, with reports that Preston keeper Andy Lonergan is already being lined up as a replacement, he said: “Marcus has been a massive help to me over the season.

“As goalkeepers we are all very close and support each other whoever is in the team. Everything happened so quickly at the end of the season and I know a lot of things weren’t going to be sorted out until we knew where we were.

“Whatever happens with Marcus he has been a big help to me and I’m sure I’ll stay in touch with him.”

Hennessey put the seal on his season with a final appearance for the Welsh in the Carling Nations Cup on Friday but now feels firmly re-established as Wolves’ first-choice after Hahnemann stepped in to take up the role the previous season.

“I’ve enjoyed the season. I managed to win the place back in the team and once I’d played a few games I felt I’d found my standard again and felt really good,” he said.

mick will save us (I hope)

Wayne really needs to sort out his aurthority with the defence in front of him. If he could do that, theres no doubt we could stop a number of goals being conceded. He is still a baby in goal keeping terms and has plenty of time to further improve his game, but theres no doubt that if he can get a voice to go with his superb shot stopping, he could be world class for us. Maybe a new or additional goalkeeping coach is needed to improve that area of Waynes game.

As for Marcus, he has done well for us, and even though technically he wasnt as good as Wayne, his age clearly showed as he was definately better at commanding his area. Good luck to him, wherever he finds himself next season.

If I recall correctly, Chelsea were asking £4 for Mancienne this time last year. Jez Moxey wisely, in my opinion, refused to pay that much. Played some useful games for Wolves as a defensive midfielder but he’s not what we need at the moment. Still, best of luck to the lad.

Thanks for Mancienne’s efforts but it was clear to see with the final games – mistake at Blues, run ragged against Blackburn – that it was the right move not to sign him. I would like Roger Johnson or Scott Dann but think we might struggle, as other bigger spenders will be in!

If Man City are still interested, I’d swap Hennessey for Given plus cash. I think he makes too many mistakes and he’s got at least another 5 years before he peaks and we need someone now as defence is our weakest area.

Other keepers to go for: Friedel, Westwood, Gilkes, Foster

I wish Mancienne all the best, I think he was a good player but as a centre back not solid enough. Hennessy is a good keeper for his age and a good shot stopper but I think we need a more experienced keeper who has a more commanding presence. Given would be a great signing, though we would be lucky to get him. Brad friedel, David James and Edwin van der sar have all shown quality keepers can play into their late thirties.

Mancienne turned out to be a disapointment after some good games early on in his loan period he has really struggled and more so since his injury.

With better coaching and if he had been given a settled role then who knows.

I am lookimng forward to seeing Hennesey play with a more accomplished defence in front of him, which he hasn’t had for the last two seasons, should this happen and he can command his area better then we could have one of the best keepers in the PL as confidence will breed confidence.

However coaching will also play large part in whether he steps up to the plate.

I’m surprised M Mancienne is considering Hamburg. My instincts suggested that he would probably not be signed by us. He has given good value over the loan periods with Wolves and he will always be appreciated for that. But I saw him staying in England, with possibly QPR (where he was previously on loan) as a destination – especially as it is a London club near his home. Good luck, where ever you go, Michael – and heartfelt thanks for your contribution. Hamburg didn’t do Keegan any harm!

ooooohhhhhhhh noooooooo!!!!!!! Not Hennessey, he is the worst we can have! This is gonna cost us next season for sure. He is so hopeless and is the key reason we ended up so far down. The kid has no control of the box and more so the respect of the back four. He pulls off so many saves as he lets the opposition get into the box. He’s meant to the the extra pair of eyes for the back line….!!! NO NO NO, Hanneman should have stayed – far superior but Muppet picks his favorites! I’m gutted.

I must say this came around quickly and for much less money than greedy Chelski were going demand from us! Why haven’t we signed Jamie O’Hara yet? I thought the deal had to be done by the end of last week?? If we miss out on him a number of us will be seriously hacked off. I would love to see us make an audacious £10 million bid for Johnson AND Dann.
I hope we will move quickly on any potential deals like we have done before to steal a march on our rivals. I would also like to see some kind of a deal for Kyle Naughton who can play both full back positions and will be an England regular some day soon. He has a lot more potential than either of Warnock or Konchesky.

Henners, well done on a solid season. At times it lpoked like a turkey shoot out there, your d-men going spare a lot of the time, and you keeping Wolves’ chances alive with some clutch saves, non bigger than the second half dive, stab and clear of Foley’s botched marking of ex-Wolves, Jason Roberts, who you saved magnificently! Chewy is a fine senior pro, so you had the best at your back, pushing you all the way. Marcus, if you are reading this, get yourself to Quest Field sometime soon, so you can push Seattle Sounders a bit further, to claim their first ever MLS title! Thanks for all you did at the Old Gold and Black! UTMW!

Very pleased Mancienne won’t be at Wolves next season. He was awful in 09/10 and 10/11. Not sure about Andy Lonergan as No2 goalie though. You don’t want a keeper who never amounted to anything as your No2. If we’re shopping in League One we’d be better off signing Charlton’s Rob Elliot. He’s a very good keeper and would be able to pressure Hennessey for the shirt. Competition is healthy.

Good luck to MM at Hamburg, and also to USA where ever he ends up. Last close season we got in quick and had all our transfer business done and dusted in the first few weeks, hope the same is going to happen again before the rest start sniffing around our transfer targets. Already there is talk of Sunderland coming in for Roger Johnson, and it wouldn’t surprise me if someone else makes an enquiry to Spurs about O’hara. As to a back-up goalkeeper then Green from West Ham would do nicely for me (though I thought Ikeme wasn’t bad, so whats happening there?), whether they would let him go though is another matter. If Henry goes to Newcastle as some people on here seem to think might happen (I havent seen or heard anything about that), then we should get in quick for Reo-coker as a natural replacement.
