Midfielder Nenad Milijas has left the door open to an extended stay with Wolves despite losing his first-team place during the survival crunch.

The Serbia international midfielder will discuss his future with the club on his return from holiday this summer.

Fresh doubts were raised about Milijas’ future at Wolves after an already patchy Molineux career suffered a further setback when manager Mick McCarthy dropped the 28-year-old for the survival run-in.

Now McCarthy’s plans for Milijas, who is halfway through a four-year contract, will be one element of the changes being planned by the club in the summer transfer market with midfield one of the areas marked down as a priority for strengthening.

Milijas’ future has been a hot topic with fans who have taken the player to their hearts especially in light of his battle to cope with the extra physical demands of the Premier League through extra training.

And Milijas, who has been the subject of transfer speculation over the final weeks of the season, says he is still loving life at the club.”I’m just really happy that we’re safe and it’s all over. Now we have time to rest and have a holiday,” he said.

“Moving to Greece? People can say whatever they want, but I don’t know anything about that.

“The club will say if there’s anything to say. But I’m really happy here and I love the fans.”

Milijas was omitted by McCarthy after the 1-1 draw against Fulham and left to watch the five-game climax to the season from the substitutes’ bench. In all, he made 23 Premier League starts and admits he was disappointed not to play a more prominent role.

“Of course I want to play regularly – every player wants to play,” Milijas added. “But for now I’m not thinking about that. There will be time to talk with the gaffer and the club to see what’s best for me.”

Wolves have never officially disclosed the fee for Milijas, signed from Red Star Belgrade in 2009, but it has been quoted between £2.6m-£3m. Wolves may decide this summer represents an optimum moment to get a return on their money.

n Birmingham were today linked with a move for David Jones following the midfielder’s release by Wolves.

Milijas really is an enigma. We can all see that he can ooze class and some of his passing is sublime, but, he can also go missing. This is the Premiership and his lack of pace, and dare I say, sometimes determination exposes our midfield. If we want to get away from the 4-5-1 we have to have midfielders we can rely on for 95minutes. There will always be a split amongst the fans on Milijas (we’ve even had some suggesting he takes Henry’s role !) but I’d sell him whilst he’s still got two years on his contract.
    I see Reo-Coker is a free agent.
PS To get away from 4-5-1 we also need a more reliable defence, but, I think the Board and Management seem to have recognised that.

We should keep Milijas despite Mick’s decision to stand him down at the end of the season.
I would suggest Milijas has shows leadership skills to the team, sadly lacking as Henry was unable to do it, and will prove to be a solid player for Wolves next season.

If its a choice between Craddock and him than Craddock should be released.

Love Nenad and his improved work rate and tackling has been excellent. The problem is I can’t see him in a 442 with Henry (I know what some will say to that). If we play 451 I would still rather see O’Hara, Henry, Guediora. So not first choice, but definitely worth a new contract as a good squad player with a great attitude.

I’d have Milijas in the holding role (the position he plays in and captains his country) alongside O’Hara every day of the week over Henry!

Back up would be Guedioura. It’s Henry who isn’t good enough and needs to be sold for us to move forward.

Millijas was one of the players who I thought would do well if he had a decent run in the team, however when he did get his chance he didn’t take it. Talented player but didn’t fulfill his potential.

I think he should be sold next season and let’s concentrate on a new midfiled line up.

We don’t need more of the same next season.

Its not just about improving the first team, we need to improve the squad as a whole. Letting Milijas go after he has gain experience in the league and, at times, shown he is a quality player wouldn’t make any sense. With David Jones leaving I would be stunned to see Milijas leave as well.

On balance I hope he stays, and when appropriate, play him alongside O’Hara.

Milijas is probably Wolves most creative player and best from a dead ball situation. But I think he only fits in the team when we play 4-5-1 and it would be good to think we will play more 4-4-2 next season with Doyle and Fletcher partnered together up front.

Its a difficult one with Milijas.

Theres no doubt that he’s our most cultured and technical player in the squad. A player who, along with O’hara, is the only player we have who can keep possession of the ball and really pick out a pass – qualities that we really lack in the team.

However, because we are largely a team of tryers – who rely on effort and commitment in the absence of genuine quality – we are not a good enough team to compensate the fact that he does go missing in games. Furthermore, given that he tends to largely play as part of a 4-5-1, this would be felt even more in a 4-4-2. So to suggest that he would make us more competative as a Premier League force as part of a two-man midfield is naive.

The reason we were in the bottom 3 for 95% of the season and the vast majority of the season before, is because we are not good enough WHERE IT MATTERS.

It’s all very well and good for McCarthy to say that we’ve played some good football this season, and to quote Alex Ferguson – saying that we’re in a false position etc. But the reason why we’ve struggled to get out of the bottom 3 for the last 2 seasons is because we are not good enough where it matters: We are too easy to beat (20 defeats this season is the worst in the entire PL) – would having Milijas in the team improve this? And we do not score enough goals. Whilst Milijas popps up with some great strikes every now and again, is this enough to make us a competitive PL team next season?

If we were a team that keeps hold of the ball and dominates games more than we do, then he would not be required to run around as much as he is asked to do, and he could be

If he’s happy to stay and fight for his place then good on him – he’s probably our best passer of the ball but as a few people have already said, he can go missing in games and struggles in a 4-4-2.

Very useful to have to cover injuries/loss of form and refreshing to see a player wanting to stay and fight for his place.

Sign O’Hara up and I think our midfield options look quite strong already. I’m a big fan of Karl Henry, but he was poor against Blackburn on the last day when it (could have) mattered – Wilson Palacios is rumoured to be available from Spurs, could be an improvement?

    4) He is not good enough to much of a luxury, was that including against utd, city and liverpool games we won against the best teams in the country in which he was pivotal to.

    6) He didnt take his chance, i think he did. We were playing awful until Milijas was brought back into the side against chelsea away, we played very well and lost but we then improved from that point onwards.

It amazes me that fans who apparently watch wolves every week dont rate milijas but rate henry, unbelieveable to be honest

Nenad shud be given the opportunity to build on whats been his best season yet in the Prem. His vision, range of passing but also his work rate has improved vastly along with his understanding of the need to tackle back & work without the ball. If we were to place Nenad alongside Henry & judge their performance after every game then there would a noticeable swing to Nenads performances.
I know Henry has worn the captains armband so much this season but it wasnt for his ability as a player on the pitch & its easier to find a replacement captain than to replace what I consider a dam good player……simple decision as far as I can see it, sell Henry, keep n extend Nenads contract & get O’hara signed n give him the armband

Milijas is an enigma: a classy player much like Paul Cook used to be, blowing equally hot and cold. That said, he has the brain and skill to unlock defences with his precise passing and will be useful next season feeding our numerous wingers and Fletcher/Doyle, plus he’s not afraid to shoot and chips in with the odd crucial goal. After a good pre-season he will hopefully be fit enough to keep up with the attacking and defensive rigours of the Premiership. Keep him and move Henry on as he stifles our attacking play which was evident in the games he didn’t play last season.

A really good player and a good person to boot. Never causes trouble, even though McCarthy has not treated him that well. When he has played over the last two years, Wolves have a win ratio of one in three, without him it drops to one in five. He should be a near automatic pick for most matches. The Usual Suspcts

Milijas was brought to Wolves in the knowledge that he played a free role creating chances for Red Star Belgrade to score – and wasnt really used to play an ultra defensive role in a midfield that often played so deep ala Wolves

He has had to adjust to this new deep midfield role that more often than not invited other teams right back at us whenever we lost the ball – so no surprise that his form has been up and down – Imv confidence comes with feeling comfortable in your role

Without O Hara and Hunt creating opporunities in games we would be left with relying on Jarvis – Guedioura (sp?)is imv under appreciated by MM as he has shown that he has what it takes to scrap in midfield but isnt a wide player

Karl Henry imv could still become a more grounded player under the right coach – which leads me to say that Terry Connor may be the one who should make way for a better coach ala Ray Wilkins – someone who has played and coached at a higher level

Im no fan of KH but if people look back at Chrstiano Ronaldo’s first few seasons in the Prem – it is obvious that his frequent step overs in games were ‘coached out’ of him

As a Captain – KH is not strong enough but perhaps with the right coaching we could see progress in the right direction with players like Milijas and Karl Henry?

The real question marks are in defence – which is weak in the middle and at Left Back and whilst Big George Elokobi is an adequate squad infill – he shouldnt be first choice imv

JC a great servant – but a regular first choice? Berra – shirt tugging specialist – Championship and Scottish Prem capable Stearman young and able to be coached by a better coach than TC Myokolo – did very well for Hull stats very good again with a different coach could see vast improvement Zubar ad Foley at Right back – imv no need for another player to cover at RB

As for talk of Johnson purchase from Blues – someone else on another post has already mentioned – Scott Dann valued by Blues at £10m so what chance we buy Johnson ?

Dann and Johnson have a very good undestanding and working relationship so will Wolves bust a gut to get both or either of them or are we going to try elsewhere when the price scares us off again?

O Hara would make a great purchase but we need badly to improve both centre half slots and first choice left back Milijas and KH imv should stay and thanks TC but Wolves require a first team coach that can cope againts Prem opposition and reduce our goals against column drastically

We hope for far better & enjoy the Bank Holiday to ALL football fans everywhere!

    Up the Wolves!!!

best player at the club by a mile, he needs the ball and our defence hasnt got the ability or confidence to play the little balls into his feet, even if he is marked that he requires, he should be touching the ball 100 times a game , using him as a wall to bounce balls off, and starting moves deep and arriving late on the edge of the box, in oharas early games you could see the frustration at coming deep only to see the ball fly over his head, he actually gave berra a rollocking one game for not giving it him to feet, milijas needs the same,

Milijas did well in midfield when he was paired with jones, while Henry was out the team. I feel as much as we need a defensve midfielder, the likes of Milijas and O’hara in midfield could potentially allow us to hold onto the ball much longer, giving the defensive side of our team more of a break. Milijas definately improved his work rate this season, and hopefully a full pre season could improve O’hara aswell. I would be interested to see those 2 together in midfield to see how well they gel.

Yes bags of skill, but he’s not the only one guilty of failing to keep up with Premier League pace and tanacity. My concern is if Henry goes, we might be even more exposed at the back.
