Wolves’ extra break after survival

Wolves’ survival success has got the players an extra week on the beach – and a re-run of last season’s pre-season plans ahead of their third successive season in the top flight.

Manager Mick McCarthy has ordered his players to report back on July 4, at which point they will be whisked off for a training break in Ireland.

The squad are returning to Kildare to start getting into shape at the Carton House sports complex which was their first base of operations last year.

But McCarthy could only ink in his plans after the team’s safe passage through Survival Sunday.

He said: “We couldn’t confirm anything until Sunday afternoon since when everyone has gone away and I am having to speak to players on the phone – which is not the way I like to do things.

“We were too busy preparing for the biggest game of lives, careers, maybe in the club’s history and there’s nothing that can be done to upset that. If the day had gone badly, we would have been back on June 27 for the Championship.

“Actually, I think the lads got wind of that and weren’t very happy about it! I told them the best way to make sure it didn’t happen was to stay in the Premier League and thankfully they listened!

“As it is, we’ll be back for July 4. The lads have just fought their way through as hard a Premier League as it has been for some time and they have earned that extra week off.

“We will use the training pitches at Carton House but I am not planning any matches.

“It will be too early in their return for that.”

Wolves will return from Ireland on July 10.
