Jody Craddock hopeful of new deal
Wednesday 25th May 2011, 10:30AM BST.
Jody Craddock is hopeful of winning a new contract at Wolves – but defensive team-mates Christophe Berra and Steven Mouyokolo could face an uncertain summer.
Craddock, who turns 36 in July, believes the chances of him extending his Molineux stay to a ninth year are good after ending the season back in the team and feeling at his best for years.
He said: “I feel fit enough, strong enough and good enough to carry on and my movement is the best it’s been for years.
“So hopefully I’ll get a deal. I don’t want to say too much in case I don’t get one and I’m just enjoying this moment for what it is.
“But I want to carry on playing and I’m keeping my fingers crossed and my ear to the phone, and, hopefully, people will see me here next season.
“I feel better than I have done for two or three years, so I do feel confident. The hip is good – fantastic in fact. I have no problems whatsoever with it.
“I might not have the pace I had at 21, but I have the experience and I don’t feel out of place; I feel comfortable, which is nice.”
Manager Mick McCarthy has been given the green light to sign two centre-backs this summer with Birmingham’s Roger Johnson targeted.
If both deals come off, question marks will hang over the futures of Berra, who lost his place for the last four games to Craddock, and Mouyokolo, who has barely had a look-in after his £2.5m move last summer, while it looks unlikely Chelsea’s Michael Mancienne will be pursued for a fourth spell at Wolves.
Misfit Stefan Maierhofer, meanwhile, could return to Wolves after Duisburg revealed they refused to pay a £1.3million fee for him.
The 6ft 8ins Austria forward has been on a season-long loan at the German second division club, but they are not prepared to pay for his permanent transfer.
Duisburg sporting director Bruno Hubner said: “The contract will not be extended further. MSV Duisburg cannot pay the release clause.”

I still think Craddock is the best defender we have. If his fitness is ok he deserves another year.
I think he played a big part in keeping us up. Great pro.
To all the dings who questioned us signing a 31 year old – good luck with Craddock – McCcarthy only likes him cos they were at school together !!
Happy Baggies – For a baggies fan that was quite funny!
He maybe on his way to the pension office but I for one think he deserves another year. I think if he hadnt of come back into the side we were down for sure.
Time to get rid of some of the dead wood we signed last year – The Hoff, Moloyoukou et al but cant see us getting our money back.
Only quality now please Mick! O Hara would be a good one, i think a year ago we would of only dreamed of a signing of his level. I think when he has a full pre season and is fit will be even better like he was at pompey.
Craddock deserves another contract despite his age. His experience is invaluable and he is much better than Berra.
I think Berra is out of his depth, the one thing he lacks is pace which you need at this level but unlike Craddock, he doesn’t have the positional sense to make up for it. He also gives away to many free kicks, looks uncomfortable on the ball and has poor distribution.
As for Mouyokolo, who can judge. He played 2 games and the whole team played badly during those matches. I don’t feel he was given a chance. Maybe Mick saw something we didn’t but then why sign him and never give him a run in the team. I remember Zubar had to wait nearly half a season before he established himself as our best defender!
I’d like to see Johnson come in and maybe Williams who’s had a great season in the championship or Dunne if he’s got no future at Villa.
We have to improve the back four and a left back is also crucial.
I think everyone will agree that we tend to play better with Craddock in defence. It’s proven time & time again when he’s been out & then come back – he is definitely the best we have.
Could never quite understans the Mouyokolo signing, Berra makes too many mistakes as does Stearman….maybe we will see a completely new line of defence for the new season…. Mancienne has made some big errors this year but I still think he would be worth keeping, he has the potential to become a very good defender for England.
Hope the board hurries up – need to offer new contracts to Jody & Jamie O’Hara asap!!!
We have wasted alot of money on some players let’s hope we spend better for next season.
yeah Happy…. and how great did that new defender of your’s look last night…. shocking just didn’t describe his performance!!
With pace, simply one of the best centre backs in the prem… how many centre halfs read the game better then craddock?? most definately another year, but get rid of berra…
Report abuse
Typical load of nonsense from #2, obviously nothing of interest on his clubs’ message boards then.
totally agree with wolfmiester. He has proved that he can stil play apart this season and he isnt gona get any worse . I wud rather have him coming on off the bench than the likes of stearman and berra anyways. So he must be given a new deal !
Happy_Baggie – Very mature!! I’m guessing you were probably one of the people telling us to enjoy life next season in the championship before the start of the game against W.B.A
Think Craddock would be a great backup to have in the team next season and someone you can throw on if the defence is looking a bit wobbly! Having said that I won’t be happy if he is still in the starting 11 come next season.
Definitely think Berra’s days are numbered, might be tempted to keep muyokolo though as we’ll have no mancienne or berra so might be a bit light in numbers if we get any injuries.
Well a new full back is certianly on the cards and Mick may also want to sign the younger fitter and more diverse Manciennce permanently. Craddock may be offered a new contract but probably wouldn’t be first choice any more. I’m afraid Moyokolo will go being 5th choice then and I doubt Berra will want to be a 4th choice either when he’d be 1st choice elsewhere. Harsh but it has to be done if we are to progress.
Craddock has done nothing since he has come back to say he doesn’t deserve at least another year. He is fit enough and is still a real threat up front from set pieces.
give craddock at least one more yewr, what about matthew upson, he’s available on a free, high wages yes but no transfer, same as reo coker at the villa, worth looking at
Report abuse
Steven Mouyokolo should be given a chance to prove his worth.
As for Berra, he makes too many mistakes so if the right offer comes in we should look to let him go.
Roger Johnson would be a terrific signing.

Can loose Mancienne Berra and Stearman. Not seen much of Moyokolo to say. Wolves certainly need a good clear out of players. Starting with Keogh, Halford and Mierhoffer..

#2 Happy_Baggie – Nice to see your new centre back proving what a rock he is last night for Northern Ireland, was it 5 he shipped in the end haha!!! Same old Chairman snapping up the free transfers because he’s to tight to put his hand in his pocket, at least he’s proven in the Prem…… oh wait he came from Ipswich didn’t he? LMFAO!!! Jog on back to your own pages son, these pages are only for teams that have been in the Prem for 3 consecutive seasons.
As for Craddock…… yeah thinking about it he should probably get another year he’s been a great servant to the club and at present he is the best centre half we’ve got. Berra and Mouyokolo need to be moved on asap if we can get 2.5m for each of them I’d take that.
Let’s get a bid in for Stephen Warnock as early as possible before anyone else does, I’d love to see him down the Wolves.
For what hes done over the years, he deserves another contract, hes been a credit to the club, and hes still got just enough in the tank to play a healthy amount of games for us, probably not all of them though. Hes better cover than Mouyokolo, and Id rather him in the team than Berra.
Hopefully we will get two decent centre halves though now, at least one (Johnson?) being a nailed on first team starter. No more deadwood Mick please, we dont need any more Hoff’s/Mouyokolo’s etc, just 3/4 quality signings.
Oh, and how about a left back (sorry George, Im a big fan, you cant buy that sort of enthusiasm, but we need to move up in quality there)
Sign Craddock for another year, he is good enough..also i think as #15 that Mouyokolo is much better than he shown so far at our club!

If Craddock is the best defender we have, then we are in trouble!
What does that say about the quality of the others?
I have nothing against Jody but at 36 he shouldn’t be the best we have.
2 experienced PL defenders are needed to add to Craddock who should only be a stop-gap to fill in when required but NOT to be a regular, that IMHO would be stupid.
Berra has proved he cannot hack it at PL level being too inconsistent and too unreliable and Mancienne is much the same and who should look for a club at Championship level where maybe he can get away with the type of errors he often commits.
Mouyokolo is one of McCarthy’s errors which he seems to make every season – Maierhofer being another – and MM should stop looking at players from relegated clubs and look a little further up the PL table as there are squad players who would be only too glad to play regularly and probably wouldn’t cost the earth either.

Happy Steptoe
Thanks for the 4 points mate.
It kept us up
See you next season ;-)
Definitely need two central defenders and a left back. Johnson would be a very good signing (must be other clubs in for him). Williams from Swansea a good shout, if they lose to Reading. NOT Stephen Warnock, please, he is one of the most ineffective full backs I have seen, which is why Villa don’t play him.
Let Berra & Mancienne go. Give Mouyokolo an extended try-out pre-season, he has height & pace and is a goal threat in attacking set pieces.
16) Nope you couldn’t be further from the truth mate! Was gutted to see the blues go down as I’m a fan of midlands football and want to see as many teams as possible from the region playing at the highest level! I’m all for friendly rivalry but don’t take it as seriously as most!
Defence is definitely the priority and I know our front-line isn’t bad but I really think if they don’t go up Reading’s Long would be a quality signing.
We all talk of Stephen Warnock being an ideal choice for left back and I agree, but how about Paul Konchesky? He is out of favour at Liverpool and did the business at Fulham… He played in the CCC last season just so he could play football as he wasn’t able to play for another Prem club… I think he has the right attitude and definatley the right skills
Report abuse
i think Jody Craddock is fit enough and good enough in this league but i do feel we deff need 2 central defenders to give jody some cover. but i would send mancienne back as i dont feel he has proved anything..
Jody should never be allowed to leave this club, he is a legend and surely a coaching role beckons.
Berra, Stearman to go first please…
Report abuse
We should keep Craddock and if he maintains his form continue with him possibly appointing him captain.
Wolves really lack leadership on the field, and Henry is not the right person.
He is , despite his age, a reliable defender and earned his place back in the team….he should retain his place in my view.
Now my heart beat is back to something like normal, or what passes for normal with me.
IMO I think that if we were to play Mancienne at left back with Zubar at right back then with the addition of two new (better) centre half’s, Craddock as first reserve the defence would be in a better place next season. Too much change of personel at one go can be counterproductive!
Of course this has to be funded but the sale of fringe players no longer needed would help.
I am sad to say but I do think we need to replace Henry with a sound, steady even tempered defensive mid-fielder.
No more rollercoaster seasons please my poor old heart will not stand it!

Would love to see Jody stay on another season. For his performances the last 2 seasons (and before), he has certainly deserved it. Would love to see us get Johnson in aswell.
Would also like to see Mouyokolo get a proper chance….he was really highly rated by the Hull fans. It’d be a shame to see him move on without us really knowing what he can do. Maybe a first half of season loan stint somewhere would be good.
Really looking forward to next season……hang on to our best players, sign some more, extending the ground, some good youngsters coming through…..happy days ahead I feel.
Happy Baggie – failing to grasp the difference between a new contract for someone who has been a good servant for us and signing up a 31 year old on a free who has never really done anything in his career. Interesting how you have reappeared on these boards pretty much as soon as you were guaranteed to finish above us in the Premiership, the last time having been the season you were in the Premiership and us the Championship.

5)Mairhofer
6)Keogh
I think Mancienne has done nothing but pass to the opposition and make numerous mistakes this season when he has played, and he has to go. Jones doesn’t want to play for the club, and he is 5th/6th choice centre mid anyway, so get rid. The sell list is pretty obvious with the likes of Mairhofer/Keogh/Halford, but I think while Mouyokolo hasn’t really been given a chance, I would prefer to see him go and someone like Roger Johnson given a go instead. Berra/Stearman-both have shown glimpses of superb defending, but both have been guilty of terrible errors-Take your pick as your 4th choice centre back, and sell the other. Vokes, I feel for. He showed real glimpses of quality at times in the promotion year, and while he hasnt really been given too many chances at this level, when he has been given a go, and come on as a sub, he has missed one or two real guilt edged chances. He also has been given a chance to prove himself at championship clubs on loan, and while I accept that he has been unlucky with injuries, when he has played, he has hardly set the world alight. This coming season, he will no longer be classed as a ‘youngster’and so will take a vital place in the squad of 25, and at present he is 5th choice striker behind Stephen Ward, and therefore, should be moved on.
In terms of potential signings, I would love us to go for Roger Johnson, definately NOT steven warnock-so overrated. I wouldnt mind the other two from the Bluenoses either, ie Dann and Ridgewell as the other centre back and left back needed. We need to commit O’Hara to a permanent contract, and we need a better holding midfielder, with Henry as second choice-i dont really have anyone in mind though at present. In all, a good Left Back, holding midfielder and 2 centre backs are definately needed!

Jody deserves a new deal, he is the best defender we have by far and that’s because the rest are SHOCKING! Mancieene is clueless so is Berra and stearman. We need to get Roger Johnson, it’s a must.

My point.
Throwing money about does not always improve the Team. Continuity has worked so far with small improvements brought in incrementally progress is being made.
More points last season, third year in the prem.
The thing is that we need to sell the (dead)wood to sensibly fund the new players required.
Top ten finish next season with the right players brought in.

I know the Wolves scouts have been active in scotland and are trying to set up a player exchange with Rangers – Berra going north (plus cash) and one or 2 of Papac (LB), Bougherra(CB) and/or Edu (LM) moving to W’ton.
My mate works for Carling (Rangers sponsors) and is working with Rangers on a contract extention

At 32 years old Matthew Upson could be a great signing for us.He is a proven England international. He was badly let down by thise around himin the free fall that West Ham suffered AND he is up for a free transfer.
I would also love to see Scott Parker replacing Henry, the master of the sidewards pass.
I know he is a “local lad” but he makes so many mistakes & is the weakest link in midfield. As for an insperational captain, give the armband to Jamie O’Hara.Since he joined us from Spurs ( thanks for letting us have him & sending the Bloos down…lol )he has gone from strength to strength. You can see why Redknap rates him highly!

Parker (player of the year) will join a top 5 club ….. not us (ever!). Same with Upson!
Bougherra would be a good call – with a couple of algerian/belgians already at the club he might well join

My take on the matter:
Keep Jody on a one year extension as back up.
Buy: Johnson & Upson & the CH from leicester (cant remember his name) & Knonchesky
Sell: Berra & Stearman (send back mancienne)
Buy: O’Hara & Holding midfielder (put a cheeky offer in for viera also)
Sell: Henry & Kightly (Jones goes on a free)
Buy: top class striker & get welbeck on loan or sturridge
Sell : Vokes & Doyle

#18, i agree with what you posted, especially getting Warnock in, I was saying in january when he lost his place at villa that we should of signed him back then. If we cant get him how about konchesky as an alternative, not great at liverpool but he prooved himself at fulham, and his spell at liverpool hasnt made him a bad player.

If, as the article states is true that McCarthy has been given the green light to sign two new centre backs, then it follows that there will be at least two current centre backs moving on.
Therefore two from Craddock, Berra Mouyokolo, Mancienne and possibly Stearman will go. Of those mentions I would speculate that Mancienne will go back to Chelsea and Berra sold.
Stearman is still in my opinion learning his trade and can be used either as a centre back or right back and consequently should be retained.
Even if we do sign two new centre backs we will need to have sufficient reserve strenght. On that basis we should keep Craddock and Mouyokolo as and when when suspensions and injuries occur to the new recruits, who I am assuming will be the first choice players.
We also have a good young centre back in Danny Batth.
Keep Craddock for a year as cover only , When he is in the team we play to deep.
Craddocks a great chap and a loyal servant and all that but he is clearly past it for Premiership level. Retain him as a defensive coach but no more playing time.
Berra, Stearman and Mouyoloko should be offloaded as soon as possible.
Sign Mancienne up, he is clearly not part of CHelsea’s plan. He had a dodgy return after his injury but this guy is class, no doubt about it.
So that leaves us probably needing 2 centre halves and 1 or 2 full backs, lets keep Zubar and see how he returns after injury. I could live with Roger Johnson. What about Samba? Would he switch Blackburn for Wolves?
I think the story to come yet is the deal with O’Hara , its probably going to involve more players going either way. Hopefully we can pick up a defender and hang on to Jarvis/Hennessey who might be targets for ‘Arry.

If we take it as read that we will be signing two centre backs (plus a LB and CMF) it’s gonna be quite crowded in the central defence department.
I do NOT agree with 34 that they are all shocking. It needs a bit more mature thought than that.
Mancienne is not clueless at all, but, for me he hasn’t improved upon his Championship performances and should return to Chelsea.
Berra to be sold. He has done well at times, but, a player of Roger Johnson’s ilk would be a major step forward.
Stearman. A good athlete has to tame the recklessness. Valuable member of the squad.
Craddock. The party’s over, thanks Jody. He showed his age in the first 45 against Blackburn. He’s a good painter.
Mouyoloko. Hull rated him, MM rated him. Let’s see what he’s got.
George. He may be the surprise package at CB and also able to cover our new LB. Clearly the Talisman to fans and players.
Danny Baath. Let’s hope that he’s one of the kids to break through at last.
As usual, it seems the 3Ms have already started to put their Premiership plan into action so we may see some arrivals and departures quite soon

Bougherra in a deal with Berra, I would love to see him alongside Roger Johnson in our defence!
Shouldn’t Dann be our target before Johnson? Look how Blues sank without him.
About O’Hara…..he does good things but he is one of the most one-footed players I have ever seen [on a par with Dave Dick, West Ham,many, many years ago.] This makes him seem awkward sometimes and leads to him holding up moves too long while he gets the ball on his left side. Positionally, too I’m not fully convinced.
O’Hara pretty average, about £2m would be right and we need better than that. Johnson has been terrible since Dann got injured – not sure about either. Jody still the best cb at the club. Get rid of Berra and Stearman, both championship at best.Need two fullbacks – Elokobi poor and Foley not good enough. Zuber worth an extended run when fit. Need to sort the midfield to accomadate Milijas, best footballer at the club creative wise. Get Hanneman back in the net – different class to the chicken.Doyle, Fletch and Jarvo top class. Lets hope Kightly comes back to where he was. Oh yeah – new manager please – one with a clue about what makes a good defender.

Laughingwolf #46+#47, I agree with a couple of the blanks, Bougherra has always been a player I have rated, and a swap for Berra would be a great move. Roger Johnson is also a great shout, and I would definately love him plus dann plus ridgewell, or any combination of the three. A few people have banded around Upson as a possibility, but Ive never been a huge fan, plus hes getting on a bit, plus the West Ham fans dont particuarly rate him anymore. Cuellar also sounds good to me if we could afford his wages, and gardener/noble for the left back spot also sounds good. Im not a massive fan of warnock, and i dont think Manciennes distribution is good enough to be a left back, but i do like konchesky, and he seems to have the attitude that we want from a wolves player. Anyone offering Scott Parker, and ive seen one or two, as an option is living in cloud cookoo land. He will be moving to a mid to the likes of Fulham, Villa, spurs-and yea, fulham and villa are not much above wolves, but they have more buying power and more wages to offer, having been in the league for much longer. At least we all seem to be in agreement that we need a more defensive midfielder, a left back, 2 centre backs and O’Hara. Lets just hope the 3Ms see it the same!

51) In case you haven’t been aware each team plays the others twice, once at home and once away. The idea is to gain more points than the other clubs.

Oh dear….Baggies fans now saying they “saved” us? lol but i wont get into that as its child’s play :)
Personally Jody deserves a year extension, as someone above said…he is loyal through and through, loves the club and is born leader on and off the pitch. Ye he probably is our best defender which does say volumes for the others. Mancienne hasn’t been anywhere near the quality he showed in his first season on loan to us back in championship days…i not been convinced at all. I heard couple weeks ago that Rangers are looking at Berra….I for 1 wont miss him where ever he goes. Upson will want wages that are out of wolves pay structure so he will go to a top ten club. johnson would be a good signing and i do like the rumours in this thread about Bougherra coming here…despite his suspect temperament he would be quality for us.
And as a dream signing what about Joey Barton?? He been refused a new contract by Newcastle and i would love to see him in Gold and Black doing Henry’s job (who i think has been given unfair flack on these boards this season) but Barton is much better quality and his discipline has been much better this season. But ye his wages would probably rule him out :(

I’d keep Moyokolo as I think we need to give him more action, perhaps loan him out. Jody has been a wonderful role model for the club and deserves some kind of a coaching role, but as for playing I think he will become a liability and he’s too good a bloke to be remembered for that. As for Berra, I’ll drive him him up to Glasgow in my own motor!
Dann and Johnson (along with Craig Gardener) were Blues best players last season, and all three would definitely improve us as a team.
As for the Hoff, don’t Rapid Vienna want him back? Cause we don’t!

We need Craddock, Mick has had 2 seasons to bring in a younger replacement and gradually replace Jody but this has not happened.
The central defender we have cant cut it.
Berra- poor positional sense, poor on the ball, switches off too much
Stearman- poor positional sense, loss of concentration, poor on the ball
Mayouko- has had his injuries, but has not impressed to even get on the bench
Mancienne-good on the ball, but can caught in possession too much,a bit lightweight.
Also Berra and stearman are a waste of time when they go up for corners and free kicks. They only go up to make up the numbers and never looked like scoring. Craddock always gets a few goals a season.
We actually need a completely new defence of 2 new centre halfs and full backs

PLAYERS TO GO!!
Berra & Stearman for starters.
Maerhoffer on loan. Probably to Cardiff.
Mancienne back to Chelski or play him in his best position.
Sell Henry sideways to suit his style.
Jones to go on a free.
Milijas or O’Hara for new captain.
Give Jody, who is an inspiration and almost an institution another year.
Sign unexpected and not ancient goalkeaper to give Wayne a pain in the ass and to make him realise he’d better be a lot better.
Sam Vokes should stay.

We can probably offer them a couple to go with “their big free ready for Premier League defender from Ipswich” he is that good I can’t remember his name – TBH I have never heard of him.
I love the speculation regarding our targets – but lets all wait & see so we aint disappointed.
Up the glorious Wolves – all get right behind the 3M’s – however you look at it Mick said we wouldn’t go down & we didn’t – hey Baggies, we have achieved 3 consecetive seasons in the Premier League – have you???

Thats best case, forget about the Ex England ( eg Upson) and top 6 cast offs ( Bridge / Parker / Barton etc) we cant afford the wages. We probably hope for a couple of lower league gems/ Overseas players, if not the above. We need to stay realistic, mid table next year would be a big Step.Dont risk upsetting the wage structure, we need to build and it may take a 2/3 more years.
I would Stick with MM in any event.

You don’t think its time to plan ahead and get a prem defensive unit in????
Or will we have the same heart in mouth affair we did this season with our back four!

PLEASE get in the race for Hitzelsberger..he is quality!!
Forget about Upson, he has seen his best days..more impressed by Tomkins, place a bid..
Sign up O’Hara when we have the chance and forget about Mancienne, overrated..
Hope we get Roger Johnson

Please, please, please, no Joey Barton, yes hes a top quality footballer, but hes a thug, always has been, always will be, he toned it down this season, but he did have one or 2 wobbly patches, and i think he would be too much of a liability.
I wouldnt mind bringing in Woodgate, if spurs no longer want him, yes hes been injured allot, but hes definately quality, and as Harry said, any club he goes to he will likely be on a pay as you play contract, meaning it would be win win for us. He plays and improves the team, or he remains injured and doesnt affect our wage bill.

last summer, some were saying why are buying players from relegated clubs, hunt-hull, doyle-reading, and recently we have been linked with, roger jhonson, scott dann(bham) noble, upson(west ham), .
maybe we should try to sign players from teams who have just missed out in their leagues, like cardiff,leeds,forest/reading,swansea. i know they’re still in lower leagues but to have got so close to promotion means they must have some quality. utw

22) Yes the four points you took of us kept you up, and yes we had the opportunity to put you down, but it was a luxury we could afford to throw away, sadly for you, you have never known such luxury, and probably never will, think on?
If you are trying to claim that by taking four points from us, but finishing lower makes you a better team, I will take it you are also stating we are better than Arsenal and should be in The Champions League next season.
So which is it? you cant have it both ways!

72) It clearly still hurts. Get over it FGS we are currently all on nil points.
Is your nom-de-plume meant to encapsulate the first half at Molineux ? I should change it, we don’t need reminding and your lot certainly don’t.

72) We only need one half
You have to be pretty dim to come on the Wolves site with a name like that.
What was it again ? 2-0 to the Wolves, game over.
(See you’ve dumped Meite after his assist. Aaaaargh !!)

51,
Your very welcome.
Or at least you would be if you actually did gift us those points, the facts are that you didn’t, you couldn’t do anything about it & the only reason we didn’t take all 6 was down to McCarthy & his strange decision at your little ground to take a midfielder off for an attacker & give you lot the space to play & attack us.
And don’t bother boring us by saying the match at ours didn’t mean anything, since when has a local derby mean’t nothing???
Kev, shouldn’t you be looking after your gaffers sunbeds, you’ll lose your £3 a day wages if you’re not carful…………..
See you next season, Steptoes ;-)
