Wolves now want to ‘do a Stoke’
Tuesday 24th May 2011, 9:44AM BST.
Wolves have vowed to ‘do a Stoke’ next season and finish in mid-table after learning from their brush with the drop.
Manager Mick McCarthy is hoping to make an early strike in the transfer market after being given the go-ahead to sign two centre-backs, while also targeting a left-back and a midfielder.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We want to be in mid-table – whether that’s a realistic step remains to be seen.
“But we’re looking to improve the team and hopefully those improvements will galvanise us again.”
The bold claim was backed up by utility man Stephen Ward.
The 26-year-old, who has missed out on a start on his first Ireland trip against Northern Ireland tonight, believes Wolves can establish themselves like the Potters, who finished 13th and reached the FA Cup final after ending up 10th in 2009-10.
Ward said: “We’ve survived ‘second season syndrome’ and stayed up and now we can build on it like a lot of clubs have in the past. We’ll look to do what Stoke did this season.
“If we can look at things we didn’t do right this season and come back next time I’m sure we’ll be stronger.
“Last year we stayed up with a couple of games to go and to be involved in this can only benefit you as a footballer.”
