Ireland KO for Kevin Doyle
Monday 23rd May 2011, 1:20PM BST.
Wolves striker Kevin Doyle is out of Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia next month after confirming he came back too early from injury.
The £6.5m forward has revealed the extent of the aggravation he suffered after making his comeback nine days ago at Sunderland from torn medial ligaments in his left knee on March 26.
Starting with the Carling Nations Cup games tomorrow and May 29 against Northern Ireland and Scotland, he now misses four games for Ireland, including a friendly against Italy in Belgium and the qualifier on June 4.
“I’m definitely out for Macedonia,” said Doyle, who had been hoping to play some part in yesterday’s 3-2 defeat to Blackburn.
“Basically it was ‘touch and go’ for last week and we thought it was alright.
“It was on the borderline of being perfect and I had to try to come back for the end of the season to make two games, and maybe I came back a week too early, but it was totally my decision.”
Doyle, who had been out for seven weeks, insists the latest injury is not a major problem. “It’s just a little twinge and it’s set it me back a few weeks,” he added.
“I caught the medial ligaments and the knee is vulnerable for a week or two after you come back.”
