Mick McCarthy’s Wolves have ensured they will be playing Premier League football next season despite losing 3-2 at home to Blackburn on a dramatic final day of the season.

Wolves live to fight another day

Midlands rivals Birmingham City and Blackpool joined West Ham United in the Championship.

There were jubilant scenes at Molineux as the final whistle confirmed that Wolves would be staying up, after a rollercoaster afternoon for the supporters.

Blues were relegated after they lost 2-1 to Tottenham, with Roman Pavyluchenko scoring in injury time to confirm their fate.

They had looked on course to stay up when Craig Gardner scored an equalizer, with Wolves going down on goal difference.

Having been 3-0 down at half time, Stephen Hunt scored Wolves’ second on 87 minutes to ensure that they stayed up on goal difference at the expense of Blues, only for Alex McLeish’s side to be doomed by Russian striker Pavyluchenko’s goal for Spurs.

Blackburn led courtesy of goals from Jason Roberts, Brett Emerton and David Hoilett.

Wolves hit back in the second half with goals as Jamie O’Hara and hero Hunt, who is unlikely to ever have scored a more celebrated goal in a defeat.

Blackpool led the champions Manchester United 2-1 at one point, but eventually lost 4-2.

Blackburn’s win ensured they stayed up, while Wigan won at Stoke to gain Premier League survival.

Congratulations, you did it by default and I am embarrassed.

I would like to know where the Wolves football team was in the first half because it certainly wasn´t at the Mol.The first 45 minutes was a complete and utter disaster.

For the second half I decided not to look at the reports because the game wasn´t shown here, I had the ignomy of having to sit on my settee and watch the Man U and Blackpool game with my mate who is a Man U thoroughbred. To say I was embarrassed to rely on Man U and Spurs to help my beloved team stay in the Prem was a very hard and bitter pill to swallow.

I would like to say to any Blackpool players and supporters ” hold your heads high” your team played with heart and courage to the final whistle and I can only hope that Wolves will be worthy of the place you have given them in the next Prem season, ,,,to be worthy Wolves have got a mountain to climb as far as I am concerned.

Mr Morgan stated that Wolves players would take a 50% drop in wages next season if they didn´t stay in the Prem,,, well I think they should all take that 50% drop in wages after watching a first half debacle of a non team performance, after all they didn´t win when they had control of their own destiny. if there are any celebrations in the dressing room I would be very loathe to be a part of them.

My final words are to Mr Morgan, Mr Moxey and Mr Mc.Carthy. You have survived by chance make sure this does not happen again and spend money on proven Premiership, British players as the first priority and what ever is left spend on the Stadium.

Thank you for a Premiership season hopefully never to be repeated.

    So WWFC stayed up,despite the best efforts of the Muppet Mick,like I’ve being saying all along, more luck than by judgement; Time for MM to go, so Morgan, grow some and sack him and his staff in the morning, if Moxey moans, give him his P45; Get in ALLERDYCE in the morning, then bid for DANN & JOHNSON (£20M), a proper leftback(£8m), 3+quality midfielders(£24m), 2 strikers (£24m)(ODEMWINGE should be one); Get rid of ALL the current defenders xcept Foley, get rid of Edwards,Henry, Davis,gudiare,that frog, Hunt, Doyle, EBB, Vokes,Hoff,Keogh; Nett spend around £35m that will keep WWFC in the top flight for at least 5 years with no need to spend loads for another 3/4 years; Stop trying to do it on the cheap Mr Morgan;

Me too I guess and an exile likewise. Too close for comfort, too nail biting for the fans, no threat to the opposition football.

Are we heralding in the McCarthy era? All I can say is it’s bound to end in tears. Like Castles made of sand, eventually, we’ll fall into the sea.

I’d prefer to say I hope not but Steve Morgan seems as dumb as they come, when it comes to adventurous football. So we’re stuck with Mick until the sh*t really does hit the fans.

Yet we stay up. Pavyluchenko should be given a standing ovation next season when he comes to Molineux. But cant take away the second half fightback…we lose yet stay up by 1 point which makes it look like we breezed it.

On Sky it showed Wolves fans at half times with their heads down, some crying…..but after 94 agonising minutes it turned to cheers! Am happy for Mick who has been questioned on his ability many many times on these boards and the team who he has instilled spirit altho they go wanting at times like in first half. happy the fans ran onto pitch to show their joy and gratitude to a team they have screamed and cheered at who kept themselves up in the best league in world. But hope players get to do their lap of honor to thank the support and receive the love of wolves fans.

So it’s all about staying in the Premier League…..is it?

As Morgan said on Radio 5 this morning, we were the third highest net spenders in August and only 3 teams finished below us.

We spent £18m and finished lower than we did last year. Heh…but who cares? All McCarthy wants is to be out of the bottom 3 on 22 May….and the players haven’t got a 50% wage cut…so let’s jump around and celebrate that a mediocre team like Blackburn have done the double over us!

We haven’t progressed. We’ve gone backwards and the fact that Brum and Sunderland were injury ravaged at the end of the season has saved us.

The fact remains that our charismatic Manager is tactically inept, loves his favourites and won’t listen to reason. None of that will change and I, for one, think success is more than just creeping over the line!

Im being serious now, ‘we MUST get this defence sorted out this summer once and for all’ we know that MM will be manager so lets look beyond that, and look at the bigger picture. We need a 1-2 TOP CH’s & 1 TOP LB,no question about it,so if your backing your manager Steve Morgan, then back him with enough money to lure ’2-3 TOP PLAYERS” Mick’s been loyal to certain ( Championship ) players, but loyalty wont keep you up every season,we got away by the skin of our teeth this season? We also want one of those CH’s to be a leader we need a stronger Captain on the field, im a KH fan, but im sorry Karl isn’t a strong enough leader. why not ask B’ham for Roger Johnson/Scott Dann, and this time ‘pay the bloody wages’ Stephen Warnock? Never do that again please ! A nice boring mid table finish will do nicely please next season Mick! I have literally only just stopped crying! And we stayed up ! God knows what I’d have been like if we hadn’t! The relief was amazing. Boys I love you all, well done to the entire club, the team the managers, behind the scenes staff the lot! A dramatic day for a dramatic end and if we do need a pointer it was that escape that must remind the manager and the Directors that something must be done at the back to avoid silly defeats and concede silly goals. We have been extremely lucky to stay one more year and let’s hope something to be done to re-inforce the defence otherwise we shall be always in trouble throughout the season.
Hope Mick McCarthy has learnt a lot as well as the players. Some have shown great improvement and thanks to O’hara, Hunt, Jarvis and Fletcher we have obtained some vital points and I think with two or three quality players we should be a different team.
Also I would like to say that our away record must be improved if we are looking for a better place in the table and not to rely on the last day for another grand escape as this will not happen next time. At least we have shown how we were feeble when we could not even draw at home and we did the same mistake when we were defeated by Everton. There must be a rethink about the defence unless the players we have could learn with experience that they can deliver the goods next time.

First things first – we have retained our Premiership status by the skin of our teeth. Last season our final placing was on balance understandable but a second season of literally fighting for survival must now require a serious re-think of playing personnel if the new season is not again to be a fire fight. The defence needs a serious overhaul bringing in players with Premiership experience and getting rid of those who just don’t measure up – no names for we all know who they are. It is all very well bringing in young and hungry players but we need experience and someone who can bring some stability to midfield ala Ince/Rae. Two good wingers to provide width – what happened to Hamill as the season unfolded? Whether MM stays on or not/whoever is in charge, please do not put us through this again.

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

OK, we stayed up thank goodness and we are all grateful but let’s be realistic for next season

McCarthy has played no part in our survival, indeed he is the reason we were in this sorry state in the first place. We only stayed up thanks to a Russian in London, scoring a goal 5 minutes from time. In addition, one of our goals was scored by a loan player from the same club.

If McCarthy stays we will be repeating this horrible situation next year. To think the Chelsea manager has been sacked today because he didn’t come first and we are retaining a manager who has only succeeded by the efforts of a team 100 miles away.

The team needs new blood but what’s the point of giving McCarthy any more money when he only wastes it on rubbish.

The time has come for new blood, not only on the pitch but also in the manager’s chair otherwise we will have more of the same.

What a day.Have to admit after the first half when I think we froze and the occasion got to our players and we forget how to use our wide players and where indecisive in defence. We seemed to be playing with fear but then after some choice words by Super Mick(yes Super Mick) who I will come to talk about later we came to the party and played our football. The crowd did it’s part today and kept right behind the Boys even though some booed at half time but when the scores were coming through we made the ground Rock and it filtered to the boys and urged them one and when Hunt put that ball into the top corner everyone was hugging total strangers that’s the Passion that makes us the Best supporters around. Now let talk about the future ,for all new Mick knockers we are here because of the decision he has made and players he has signed and tactics he uses.In football we allways wants stability not sacking managers like West Ham,Blabkburn,Newcastle.Everyone knows he has his favourites but which manager doesn’t.One thing I will criticise Mick for is not finding a centre half like himself who will put his body on the line for us.We need to move forward as one Family and not be so negative.Three seasons in the Premier league can’t be bad.Do you Numptys who keep asking for big Sam Alleydyce want to see long ball percentage play it into the channels football dross or play with wingers win some and lose some games.

He’s done that and he should be given the opportunity to see if he can get Wolves a better start next season than this season. If we’re in the bottom three by November then think about a change but let’s at least give the guy a chance, so far he’s done what’s required which is to stay in the Premier League. Last game of the season was a microcosm of how we have played all season. Inconsistent.

Awful in the first half (as we were in so many games – both Wigan games and West Ham away spring to mind!). Brilliant in the second half, whilst riding our luck (both Manchesters, Chelsea, Liverpool).

We have to cut out the errors at the back. Hennessy needs to grow a pair (he’s a brilliant shot stopper and 2 saves yesterday went a long way to keeping us up but he needs to come for more crosses and command his area better). We need to be both stronger in midfield and more creative. Our strikers need to be more clinical. All these improvements should see us comfortably mid-table.

Wolves stayed up because of ultimately accumulating 1 point more than the Brummies over the full 38 games. So, the table doesn’t lie, fullstop.

On the other hand, Wolves seemingly did their very best to relegate themselves in possibly the most dire first 45 minutes of this or any other season in living memory. Recent praise about their professionalism and total commitment looked like leaving egg on our faces as they conspired to look like rank amateurs on the biggest day in our recent history. Boy, that garbage was hard to swallow.

The second half saw an unbelievable turnaround as Mick changed things around and the penny finally dropped that we were in deep, deep trouble. So, full credit all round for a stirring fightback that could easily have seen us win let alone draw.

It’s strange to think that the odd goal here or there could’ve seen us down, such was the tightness of this league. However, we got lucky. Very, very lucky. So lucky, in fact, that we’ve probably used up all our luck reserves for the next ten years.

Right now, Mick’s a hero to many but oh, how so very close we came to seeing it all come crashing down on our heads.

For now, I think I’ll just bask in sheer and utter relief rather than in any kind of ‘glory’. Too much adrenalin just doesn’t do the heart any good at all, does it?

My best wishes are sent to the club and every Gold-blooded Wolves fan across the world. Enjoy today my friends, and celebrate the survival of one of England’s genuine footballing giants. Let’s dissect the season tomorrow, not today. I’ve a feeling this site is going to be red-hot in divided opinion over the coming weeks and months. As a loyal Wolves fan and STH for almost 25 years, this is excellent news. I have always wanted us to stay in the Premier and it has been a rollercoaster season.
But, SM needs to decide where we go from here – MM and Clipboard are not good enough at this level and if we stick with them we’ll be battling against relegation again next year.
Don’t get me wrong MM has done a great job getting us here and keeping us here, but we finished 15th with 38 points last season – this demonstrates how the league has become more difficult yet we haven’t improved significantly enough.
We didn’t survive ourselves yesterday, we survived because other results went our way and we could just as easily be holding our heads in our hands this morning.
Overjoyed not to be going to Doncaster et al next season, but hoping that there is a future beyond MM and Clipboard.
Yes, we did survive under Mick, but we spent £18million last summer and have gone backwards. If we do that next season we won’t have to worry about other results on the last day of the season……..

Here’s an observation: Some of the negative posters (called “moaners” by some) have repeatedly throughout the season told us on here that “The table doesn’t lie”, commenting on Wolves’ prolonged stay in the relegation zone. Then they have offered scathing criticism of individual players, the manager, staff, board and so on, as an explanation for the dire position on the PL table. Today, basically the same posters come on here stating that “Wolves were lucky to stay up”, which amounts to stating that the PL table isn’t to be trusted after all (if not beeing an outright liar). Obviously a logical mix-up somewhere!

MM showed that he does have his favourites and that ended up 3-0 down, Thank you Mick for what you have done, but,we need someone who understands the game at the highest level. The club must develop young players and give them a chance to show what they can do.

I too am unsure about McCarthy & if he can take us to the next level, but he has got us here & ept us here, so for me should be given a chance next season, building the club in this divison takes a long time, ask Bolton, Fulham, Blackburn even Blues.

But oh dear…I knew we needed to score one more, that’s what we were singing, but I had no idea Hunt’s superb goal came with only 3 mins left! And remember, although the league table shows we made it by a point, it is quite likely Blues would not have conceded a second goal if they had not been on all out attack knowing we had scored our second. The January business included O’Hara, loan, and Hammill – decent enough?

well what a roller coaster of a season, well if your stopping in charge MM you need some serious coaching help, get the ex toon boss in asap, stop playing the poor favorites and learn from the mistakes of the season, i.e. stop conceding goals in the last 10 mins, we should have been well clear if we had taken our chances and learned early on from our mistakes!
yes you need to clear out the deadwood and also look at what we really need 2 central defenders a quality left back, let Henry go to QPR ( if they want him ) as we better here already both in leadership and quality, also dare i say it another keeper and a striker, yes another striker about 6-10 million should be a must to support and feed off fletcher.
    To Go
Ward, Craddock, Edwards, Keogh, Mancienne, the Hoff, Moyokolou, Blake, Kightly, Henry,

we need to spend 20-30 million on quality not quantity- offer the hammers 7 million for Cole – get johnson & dan if possible from the blues, we have some cracking young players here as well MM its time to blood some of them pre season- Zeli for one, Danny Bath, you may be suprised,

I’m not being over critical, but Hunt & Fletcher allegedly cosy a combined £10.5 m, for a club like us that is top dollar & as such would have expected them to have had a bigger impact on our season & featured in more game than they have, the fact that they haven’t is down to the manager, if the had, then maybe, 27,000 of wouldn’t have been sat there bricking it with 3 minutes of the season left before we were safe.

Fletch at 7m, ok serious money, but I wonder if Owen Coyle or others were interested and we moved to shut them out. 129,

I agree with your sentiment completly, I just don’t think the transfers worked as well as could have last summer.

We survived by the skin of our teeth- no thanks to MM’s poor signings or tactics.

He has taken us as far as he can and should be relieved of his duties- he will never walk.

Failing that, if we are in the bottom three in November, he should go then.( But I would let him go now, no room for sentiment in football.)

Well done for staying up but I’m sorry to say this but yes the table does lie…

Its never a far off reflection from how good teams are but I just dont believe the saying “u finish where u deserve to finish” statement is always 100% true.
Its just a cop out for teams that have scraped what they set out to achieve and in honesty have been lucky.
Now I am not saying u have been lucky, u have had your fair share of injuries but no more than anyone else. And please dont think Im coming on here to rain on your parade or stir things. But I’m just stating my opinion as I really dont believe there were 4 worse teams than wolves over the course of the season.

In terms of how long teams have spent in the bottom 3 etc.
I think in no particular order the 3 worse ‘relegation teams’ of of the season have been yourselves, West Ham and a close call between Blackpool and Wigan.
And before u defend this stop and ask yourselves…. three or four weeks ago would u have agreed with this??
I think most of your fans would say yes. And deep down, a fair few fans would agree they have been one of the 3 poorest teams this season. U only have to remember the things that were being said on these pages just a short time ago.

And before u snarl and say how bitter I am being. I seem to remember when we stayed up in the great escape 2005 every wolves fan I know saying how lucky we were, how it was a fluke! And we should have gone down. But if u remember we actually won the last game 2-0 not loose it 2-3.

    And while u understandably point out the table does’t lie and that u finish where u deserve to be, therefore stay up;
Just think if that Pavlychenko shot had been just an inch higher & bounced off the top of the bar instead of underneath the bar and in the back of the net OR if Ridgewell’s missed sitter had been scored as 99% of the time it would have been. U would have gone down on goal difference, would u all be arguing the table doesn’t lie then?? Would u honestly have any complaints about going down? Or claiming u deserved to stay up?? I think not. And that could have so easily happened.

I know its a couple of if’s & buts but it could have easily happened.

But my real point is there is a fine line between success & failure and sometimes that fine line wont always be completley fair or accurate of how it shapes the outcome of things. It cant be! Lifes not fair and its just naive and too easy to just say football is the same just because it suits u.
Your telling me that the table is always bang on accurate with EVERY single position EVERY single year?? I dont think so….

Anyway looking forward to the next premiership Blackcountry derby, in all honesty it is where the fixture deserves to be

    # 133 shewolf, wrong on at leat two counts and that’s just in the first sentence.

    What about -
We survived by the skin of our bared teeth, and
this was thanks to MM’s signings and tactics.

Grace @131 has already said that the summer tranfers didn’t work as well as she might have thought and I have to give her the last word on that.

But, relieved of his duties, no room for sentiment – God, you wolver girls are sooo strict.

Mick should stay. We got the total number of points we set out to get in August. Our defence has been a problem, especially left back. My only dissapointment of the management has been the lack of urgancy to get one in January. He did buy Jelle last summer who was supposed to fill that role, and lets not forget, looked a good buy to begin with! Not alot mick could of done about the boy. The team is good, how many times this season have top analysts said wolves have played well?? i think if we carry on playing like we have we will do better next year, PLUS if we can get O’hara and new defence, plus yes maybe swap Henry for another, we maybe ok. Personnaly i dont think it would be bad business to have someone like Henry on the bench to come on if we cant get the game under control. He doesnt look impressive, but he can do a job, Wouldnt of got in the provisional 40 england squad if he wasnt doing something, But then again David batty got in the england squad!!!!!
