Threat of wage cut facing Wolves’ players
Saturday 21st May 2011, 12:29PM BST.
Wolves players will be pulling out all the stops tomorrow — to avoid a 50 per cent salary cut if they go down.
Chairman Steve Morgan revealed this week that relegation would hit players hard in the pocket, and it is understood the drop would mean their wages being halved due to a clause in their contracts.
Captain Karl Henry insisted that while he was aware of the cut, survival was the only thing on the players’ minds ahead of tomorrow’s winner-takes-all showdown against Blackburn.
“I’m certainly aware of how relegation impacts on me,” said the midfielder.
“We’re aware of the financial implications for the club, but we all want to stay in this league — no-one wants to get relegated. No- one will go out with anything other in mind than staying in the league.
“Since we’ve got into this league, I’ve always watched Premier League football and since getting promoted I’ve found out what it’s all about.
“It’s a great league, going to all the places such as Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge playing against these top players.”
Wolves go into the game on the back of successive wins for the first time this season which has lifted them out of the drop zone for only the third time in 2011.
But Henry admitted he had not enjoyed the season.
“We’ve been down there in that relegation zone for 90 per cent of the season and the pressure has been on us every single game,” he said.
“So from that point of view, it’s not been an enjoyable season.”
