Bullish Mick McCarthy today vowed to banish the threat of relegation if he keeps Wolves up on Survival Sunday.

The Wolves boss is convinced his team will achieve their aim of victory against Blackburn tomorrow and finally cut loose from the season-long threat of relegation from the Premier League.

And with it, he hopes to attract the two or three major signings this summer to banish the threat of the drop for good.

“I’m three points away from being able to improve the club again,” said McCarthy.

“If we maintain our Premier League status with those three more points, then we will try to improve again.

“Every year I’ve been here, we’ve improved.

“If we survive, then I won’t be looking for that experience again — I’ll be looking for the experience of trying to finish in the top 10 rather than out of the bottom three.”

Wolves face a never-seen-before five-way fight to avoid the last two places for the drop.

And the boss warned relegation will be greeted by a feeling of ‘worthlessness’.

“All of us are only five or six points from having a good season and yet the ones that don’t survive will just feel hollow, empty and lifeless for a while.

“And that’s not the feeling we want for a while. The ones that do go down eventually will feel worthless.

“It does not matter how many points you have gone down with. I saw Glenn Roeder recently and he reminded me about when West Ham went down with 42 points. He didn’t need to really.

“None of us want to go down and we all want to be in the Premier League next year but two of the five are going to go.”

McCarthy believes Wolves, in the only club out of the five playing at home, are in the best position.

“I would sooner be playing here,” he said.

McCarthy admits is the biggest game he has presided over in his five years at the club.

“Just by the nature of where we are, this one is the biggest game.

“Was it bigger than getting into the Premier League with Sunderland or here? Staying in the league is the equivalent of winning the Championship.”
