A tense Survival Sunday for Wolves

Wolves blogger Tim Spiers is ready for a nail-biting Survival Sunday as the club’s Premier League fate is finally decided at Molineux.

Sleeping has proved to be difficult this week.

As has talking, walking, drinking, eating and generally existing without thinking about anything other than Wolverhampton Wanderers versus Blackburn Rovers.

The nerves began when the final whistle blew at Wigan last week and the Premier League table after 37 games each reared its ugly head.

The gates to the apocalypse opened to reveal that one point separated five teams and two of them would be banished to the Championship come 6pm this Sunday.

I’m still staring at positions 15th to 19th and finding it difficult to comprehend.

After nine months’ of football it’s come down to this – the width of a cigarette paper separating the hopes, dreams and disasters of so many thousands of supporters.

No doubt Sunday will be a marvellous spectacle for the neutral, who can whimsically gaze slack-jawed at the TV, stuffing their faces with maize-based snacks and flicking casually between three live screenings without a care in the world.

They can revel in our misery, dance on our emotions, while we’re submitted to a particularly brutal form of Chinese torture. God help us if Blackburn score first.

If I hear the phrase “hey Tim, looking forward to Sunday?” one more time I cannot be held accountable for my actions. A crazed George Elokobi-style wrath complete with a wrestling clothesline finale is not out of the question.

In answer to everyone’s query, I’m not looking forward to Sunday. Who, apart from the former president of a certain motor racing federation, actively looks forward to torment and suffering?

“Come on there’s no way Blackpool will win at Old Trafford” say people with absolutely no knowledge of the notion that common sense does not exist in football say.

Does no one remember West Ham winning there, on the last day of 2006-07, when Manchester United had already been crowned champions?

It only happened four years ago. Wake up and smell your wistful ignorance – a precedent has already been set! Reason and sanity just doesn’t exist at this time of the season.

For a start who’d have thought, after the capitulation at Stoke just 24 days ago, that we were about to embark on a three-game unbeaten run that would include back-to-back 3-1 victories?

Did anyone predict that Bolton would score three at Blackpool last weekend and still lose, or that Wigan would come from two goals down to beat West Ham in stoppage time?

Sheffield United thought they were pretty safe when winning 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on the last day of the 1993-94 season, but ended up losing 3-2 and seeing five – yes five – other results go against them as they were relegated to the second tier.

Personally, I can see Wigan getting three points at Stoke and Tottenham narrowly edging out Birmingham at White Hart Lane – but it’s the Blackpool result I’m most worried about.

On a big Old Trafford pitch the game is likely to be open and expansive and, although Blackpool’s defence is leaky, they can score a few at the other end too.

Desire plays a huge part and, if they can play with confidence, I just wouldn’t be surprised to see them nick it.

Thankfully, it seems that manager Mick McCarthy is of a different mindset to this panicking deranged blogger and, in public at least, has his poker face on.

Listening to McCarthy, Jez Moxey and Steve Morgan confidently assess our survival chances at the end of season dinner on Wednesday, you’d wonder what this relegation malarkey was all about.

The trio were unwavering in their steadfast belief that all will be well at Molineux this Sunday.

It was an impressive front of defiance, in the style we’ve become very accustomed to this season, and it’s a mindset which hopefully drips down to the playing squad.

In McCarthy, as opposed to Sunday’s visitors, we have a manager equipped with the necessary experience to cope with last-day hysteria.

I see Blackburn as a decent team with a poor manager in Steve Kean and, on their day, they are capable of beating anyone.

Phil Jones and Junior Hoilett are wonderful young talents, Jason Roberts is always a handful and Christopher Samba is a colossus in both penalty areas. In short they shouldn’t be underestimated.

But neither should they be feared as we have a few things, such as our home record and recent momentum, on our side.

McCarthy can have the luxury of naming an unchanged side, or bringing in Kevin Doyle  – if fit – and Matt Jarvis.

This has been important in recent weeks, as has putting players such as Michael Mancienne and Stephen Ward in their rightful positions.

We’re at our best when we’re brave and bold and, although the stakes are so high, I would like to see us attack from the off, taking the game to Blackburn and playing with a quick tempo.

If they can block out the noise and the occasion we could – could – be OK.

There you go, I’ve nearly talked myself round.

Enjoy the game – if you can.

This blog pretty much sums up my feelings about the weekend.

    I think i should feel more confident than i do……. but………..

If it makes anybody feel a little easier about Blackpool, Fergie has said “Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Patrice Evra and Edwin van der Sar will play.” – So that won’t be a bad side & where West Ham had Tevez, Blackpool have DJ Campbell !

    Come on you Wolves !

Enjoy the game! your having a laugh! would rather not go on sunday but simpley have too.
i am also worried about the blackpool result but after seeing birmingham’s game on motd 2 sunday i think there in trouble, i have also taken hope on stoke as in the week tony pulis made 5 changes to his squad against man city and with 5 clubs that could over take them in the table it looks as if stoke saw the wigan game as a better chance of getting a higher finish in the league with £750,000 per place at stake.
so thats it WE R STAYING UP SAY WE R STAYING UP!

I do admire Mick, but this season has been a weird journey watching players either NOT being played or being played out of position.

Has Fletcher not shown what he can do – actually what he was bought to do? Ward? We’ve all had our say, but put up front (remember beating ‘Pool?) he can play.

Have we found our Bull/Mutch partnership in Fletcher/Ward?

Doyle has been a busy player but he is intended to be a goalscorer, and hasn’t really done that. If he’s sold would it be a big issue?

I always wonder if we had Fletcher and Ward up front and Doyle tucked in behind, but that is probably too attacking for Mick.

At this point I simply cannot believe it is not yet over. Still it makes you get full value from the season ticket – no ‘nothing to play for’ games at the Wolves!

I have no doubts that all fans of the 5 clubs involved in survival sunday have talked about every permutation known to man as to what could happen on sunday, I know I haven’t talked about anything else and my poor wife is getting fed up of hearing it lol. In reality a million different things could happen and a million different twists and turns too, as for Wolves well we just need to win and then we’re fine will it be that easy well we’re Wolves and nothing is ever that easy or is it……/\_/\

Wolves supporters may fear what Blackburn might do on Sunday, but I think Blackburn supporters are more fearful of Wolves.

Irrespective of the result their manager maybe a dead man walking. The indian chicken farming owners sacked Sam Allydice earlier in the season and I suspect Kean will out of a job on Monday.

Blacburn have some good players but I get the feeling that there is not the same unity that exists at Wolves.

I am confident that Wolves will produce the goods on Sunday and we will end the day as victors.

I know what you mean, Tim. I’ll be there on Sunday but I would sacrifice my attendance if me not being there would guarantee three points in our favour. It is going to be agony but you have to go through with it. Still, the Blackburn blogger has probably listed a few of our players that offer cause for concern for them. We are going to do it, we have to do it.

Aren’t we all a shade nervous, or more so than we ever thought we could be! Saying that, we come into this match about as healthy as at any other time during this long campaign; Mick, with a healthier playing staff on hand gets to – wait for this you negative nellies – play his selections in their appropriate positions! Hence, the great results we have had down the stretch, unbeaten these past three, or four of last five! Thus, whatever happens will be because we were a very good team, presently, and that paid off on the day, unless a team in better form or greater desire took the envelope to us. Let’s be realistic. We will have desire. Our 26,300 supporters will, too, and will vocally spur on the troops while vocally pummeling Blackburn’s bewildered support. On it’s day, regardless of greater numbers, be it Old Trafford, Stadium of Light and St. James,’ we are notoriously famous, our supporters that is, for out-singing and cheering on our team. Wait until Sunday! Blackburn will be a force, no doubt, but with Mick geeing up his players, who need little motivation anyhow, along with our cauldron on fire, be it the Mighty Molineux, I truly believe we are going to prove our worth and win! UTMW!

Was at Blues on Sunday and they are in freefall. Spurs on the otherhand secured a great result at a resurgent Liverpool. Spurs win. Man Utd have not lost at home all season and will not do on Sunday! As for Stoke v Wigan? If they play like they did v Wolves, they will win but the FA Cup may have done them in. In anycase the new look Wolves team should have enough to win!

..we’ve been handed a ‘get out of jail’ card in the last few weeks and now find ourselves with a fixture to ensure our survival that three of our rivals would happily trade.
We’ll be home and hosed this time tomorrow!
By the way, I’m a ’3pm Saturday kickoff’ traditionalist and hate Sunday games… missed Spurs(best performance of season?) and WBA(best 45 minutes?)… should I stay away tomorrow and hope the sequence continues??

Lets put all this into prospective.
We are the only club in the league without debt, The board are showing a level of responsibility that should be applauded and the manager is doing a great job overall.Of course he makes mistakes, he is human for god’s sake.
With a capacity of less than 30,000 there is no way we can afford to pay the wages demanded by some of the players that fans have talked about us buying in these pages.
The club has a plan for the long term and it does not rely on any one indevidual pumping his own cash into the club.I for one dont want to return to the pre Haywood days or go the way of Leeds / Portsmouth etc. I would not change places with Man.City or Chelsea fans,We have a proper football club with a management that is trying to make sure we build for the future. We were always going to be around the bottom half of the table this season but at least we have some form and momentum ( unlike that lot up the road.
Ofcourse I would be devistated if we go down today but if we do my views wont change. So lets just get behind an honest group of players and the management team…..come on you Wolves!!!!
