Time to beat the derby jinx says Matt Murray

Matt Murray today declared it’s high time Wolves ended their Albion nightmare.

The former Wolves keeper played the last time the Baggies were beaten by their arch- rivals — 1-0 in March 2007.

But the 29-year-old recalls too much heartache either side of that for comfort.

At Molineux, Albion have won four of the last five derbies, while overall in Mick McCarthy’s time Wolves have drawn two and lost three to the Baggies, apart from Jay Bothroyd’s winner.

“Since I’ve been at Wolves they’ve had more than the lion’s share of wins and can’t remember us beating them apart from that one,” said Murray, whose testimonial golf day was a roaring success yesterday.

“So we’re certainly due another win and it would be perfect timing if we could do it on Sunday and redress the balance.

“Since I was 16 I’ve been involved in a lot of derbies travelling with the squad.

“I remember travelling for that game years ago when Kevin Kilbane put the free kick over the wall and into the top corner past Mike Stowell (November 1998).”

Murray, who still trains with the players, insists there is no hiding the squad’s determination to stay in the Premier League.

“What I know for sure is how desperate these lads are to stay in the division and the fact they’ll give it everything they’ve got,” said the former keeper.

“It’s not going to be easy and it will go right to the wire. But I’d take that if someone says we’ve got to beat Blackburn on the last day to stay up.

“It would be in our own hands and you can’t ask for much more than that.

“I’m sure the lads will step up to the plate and the fans will be right behind them and there will be a cauldron of noise at Molineux on Sunday.

“If we can get a result, I think that will give us the confidence to push on.”
