Stars out for Matt Murray’s golf day
Wednesday 4th May 2011, 2:00PM BST.
Robbie Keane today led Wolves players past and present at former team-mate Matt Murray’s golf day at the Belfry.
Manager Mick McCarthy, along with eight of the current squad, took part in a celebrity golf day on the prestigious Ryder Cup Brabazon Course at the world famous course.
Former Wolves golden boy Keane is currently in opposition to Wolves at relegation rivals West Ham, but put aside his temporary differences for his best friend Murray’s event to raise money for the retired keeper’s four charities, as part of his testimonial year.
England international Matt Jarvis, goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, Richard Stearman, Kevin Foley, Christophe Berra, Stephen Hunt, Jamie O’Hara and Andy Keogh all played.
Joining them were Wolves legends Kenny Hibbitt and John Richards and former Molineux stars Denis Irwin, Alex Rae, Don Goodman and Rob Edwards, as well as Villa assistant boss Gary McAllister and defender James Collins, along with Birmingham captain Stephen Carr.
Each footballing celebrity took their place in a team of three, who paid £1,000 per trio for the event.
Following the golf, a gala dinner is being held tonight with former Wolves defender Joleon Lescott and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given are attending.
More money will be raised via a raffle and auction.
Murray is donating 50 per cent of the day’s proceeds between his four nominated charities, the Alzheimer’s Society, Penn Hall Special School in Wolverhampton, Stroke Services Cycling Group at West Park Rehabilitation Hospital and Mzamowhethu Pre-Primary School in South Africa.
