Mick’s meddling to blame at Wolves

Wolves blogger Tim Spiers has got a few home truths for manager Mick McCarthy after a dreadful run that has dropped them bang in trouble.

Well, what an absolute shambles that was.

Let’s not pull any punches – the players, goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey aside, collectively gave a disgraceful performance against Stoke on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t good enough by a long shot and displays like that wouldn’t get us far in the Blue Square Premier, let alone the Premier League.

At least, manager Mick McCarthy made no excuses this time, but he also admitted he didn’t know what had gone wrong in the past four games.

I sincerely hope that you’ve got an inkling, Mick, and that you’re just saying that to protect your under-performing players. Because I certainly don’t know what’s happened since Sunday March 20.

Oh yes, March 20, that beautiful day when the sun shone brightly, the birds sang wonderfully and Kevin Doyle’s left knee was tickety-boo.

I was a different person back then – proud, content with life, hopeful for the future. If someone smiled at me in the street, I would smile back.

I would open doors for people, say things like “what a pleasant morning,” or “come on chaps the economy’s bad but it could be worse – think of the poor blighters in Japan, let’s go on a fun run.”

But then a Wolves devotee like myself had every reason to be cheerful. We had just beaten Villa for the first time in 31 years.

In the process we had earned our seventh point in three games and looked in pretty good form to beat the drop, with just three points separating us from 12th placed and only goal difference keeping us in the relegation zone.

Matt Jarvis had been called up to the England squad and we were about to embark on an eight-game run-in, which couldn’t have been more favourable if we’d hand-picked it ourselves.

But you know what happened next. In four games we’ve stumbled to an aggregate defeat of 11 goals to two, picking up a lucky point against Fulham and getting shellacked by Newcastle, Everton and Stoke.

Kevin Doyle is injured, so is George Elokobi, and players previously high on form and confidence, such as Jamie O’Hara and Richard Stearman, look a shadow of their former selves.

Our tame run-in against teams around or just above us is now fraught with more obstacles than a Krypton Factor assault course.

If people smile at me in the street, I scowl and tell them where to shove their chirpy optimism.

I slam doors in little old granny’s faces and say things like “what a disgustingly pitiful excuse for a morning.”

I actually would rather be in Japan, as far away from Molineux as possible.

And, for this current state of mind, I’m afraid there’s only one man to blame – McCarthy.

I’ve backed Mick through thick and thin since July 2006 and I still think he’s the right man to lead us forward, whatever division we’re in next season. But our manager has made some extremely bad decisions in recent weeks.

It’s so easy to say in hindsight but his haphazard meddling with the side, which started in the 30th minute at St James’ Park when Steven Fletcher came on and we switched to 4-4-2, has done more harm than good.

The only thing he should have done after the Villa game was replace Doyle with Fletcher.

But Kevin Foley, Richard Stearman, Michael Mancienne, Jody Craddock, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Nenad Milijas, Adlene Guedioura, Michael Kightly and Adam Hammill have all been moved in or out of the side, in varying positions and with varying degrees of success.

Again, it’s the easiest thing in the world to sit back and criticise after the event and I’m not for a second suggesting that I would have done it differently in that situation.

But Mick gets paid to make the decisions and he’s made a very decent career out of it – he should know what he’s doing.

Selections like putting Adlene Guedioura on the right side of a five-man midfield make little sense.

Neither does dropping a specialist right-back in Foley and replacing him with Stearman, because you’re reluctant to leave out a player who’s been doing well, even if it means playing him out of position.

Then partnering Guedioura and Stearman together down the right flank against Fulham, an experiment never attempted before and with good reason, predictably failed miserably.

Mancienne was absolutely shocking in midfield on Tuesday, while a perfectly good and extremely effective midfielder in Nenad Milijas was left on the bench.

As for Adam Hammill, I don’t even know where to start. The young winger isn’t the be all and end all but why on earth has he been left out in the cold?

In the past few months he’s been one of our more vibrant, unpredictable players, keen to make a name for himself and willing to be direct or try something different.

But since being hauled off at Newcastle he’s played only eight minutes and didn’t even make the bench against Stoke.

A half-fit and fully-rusty Kightly, meanwhile, is back in favour despite doing hardly anything of note since his return.

I’m a huge Kightly fan and I’d love nothing more than for him to help fire us to safety, but the man is just not ready for the Premier League.

Save him for next season – we can’t afford any passengers. Sadly, Kightly is one at the moment and his selection smacks of desperation.

Our success last season was built on having a settled side, where every man knew his role and stuck to it.

Meddling like this, with panic selections seemingly made in hope rather than based on common sense, will only get us relegated.

Perhaps something has gone on behind the scenes but, whatever has happened, it needs to be rectified quickly, because the only place we’re heading at the moment is Brighton away on a Tuesday night.

The way we were going before April, playing well, suffering from more than our fair share of bad luck, but working hard and giving our all, I could probably just about accept relegation.

Hard to swallow, yes, but we had a team to be proud of and if they came up short, c’est la vie, they did their best.

But going down with performances like the one at Stoke, without a fight, is absolutely unacceptable.

We’ve lost our work ethic and organisation and, without those two assets, we’re not much of a team at this level.

Perhaps it will take two win-or-bust derby games to bring back their passion, not that it should be like that.

But as for the organisation, Mick has got to sort it out on the training ground, and fast, if we are to at least compete and not embarrass ourselves further.

If not, we haven’t got a prayer of staying up.

MM is tactically inept, against Fulham he takes off Fletcher and Milijas who can both keep the ball and replaces them with players who can’t. All we did the rest of the game was concede possession and ultimately the equaliser.

He’s out of his depth and heading back to where he should be in the Championship.

Back end of the season is no time to experiment. Why does Mick persist in playing players out of position? He must see that it doesn’t work. However if he can get the players playing in their positions AND with fire, commitment and passion then the last 4 games might go for us. Still think we could be saying goodbye to West Ham, Blackpool and Blackburn come the end of season.

Couldn’t agree more on the Hammill vs Kightly and in the last game Hunt.

Kights is trying far too hard, without the smoothness that comes from being fully fit and Hammill was looking like a great prospect whose crosses werre looking incredibly dangerous.

However in favour of Stearman he was the only guy on Tuesday to make potentially dangerous forward runs. Unfortunately they only came in the 2nd half. After Pennant’s own efforts had caused the damage.

    The Usual Suspects

The disaster in Japan as a comparison to the misery of a relegation battle is done in very bad taste!

As for the Wolves and MM – This is a self forefilling prophecy brought about by an arrogant manager and coaching staff who seriously lack in tactical and motivational skills at Premier league level

Regardless of outcome – Wolves will always be a bottom 6 side under the guidance of MM and Co

If Mr Morgan really desires stabillity in the Premiership he needs to invest in a manager that has Premiership abillity – a coaching team to match and a CEO who can attract more investment into a club that can match the club’s ambitions

The fan base has always been there – but fans are not as easily pursuaded by Moxey’s spin

At present Wolves heavily rely on the ‘hardcore’ fan base – But if we really want to grow its time we moved forward

Imv – MM and Co and Moxey are out of their depth in the Premier league – Whatever division we are in !

    We hope for far better!

This article will ring true with most objective Wolves fans. Although I would go further and question whether Mick has ever really been the sage some people try and make out he is. Remember the prolonged period without a win in the promotion season and the three awful teams that went down last year. I would suggest McCarthy has had quite a bit of luck during his tenure at Molineux. His record in the transfer market has been dreadful and if we do go down look at all the overpaid average championship standard players we will have on our books. I am sure if you bumped into Mick in the pub an enjoyable couple of hours could be spent, he seems a decent bloke, but his arrogance, stubbornness and failings at the highest level of domestic English football are plain to anyone. Morgan is proposing building a stadium where Wolves will need to attract substantially larger crowds than they get now – one thing is sure that McCarthy will never manage a team that will draw in huge crowds. Morgan owes it to the fans to stop this becoming a fractious period for the Wolves and do what he should have done earlier in the season and get rid of personnel that are past their sell by date.

I cant think of another EPL Manager that would have survived being in the drop zone for most of the season.
Mick is completely out of his depth in the Prem he is tactically nieve and doesnt have the man management skills required at this level.
What the hell has Hamill done wrong he doesnt even make the bench,if you read between the lines hes probaly fallen foul of Mick.
If we get relegated McCarthy should be the first to go,there are far better managers in the market place,Gus Poyet,Allardyce,Chris Hughton to name but a few all far better than McCarthy.Look what happened when the Baggies recruited Hodgson a manager who clearly knows what he is doing.
McCarthy said after the Everton game he was going back to basics to sort out the defence problems which hasnt worked either, the problem is we still have a Championship defence playing in the Premier League and nothing will change untill we get quality premiership experienced defenders.
The last few performances have been abysmal no fight,no passion,no energy,no leadership.
Instead of showing the players the video nastys of the last few games he should show them the Blackpool v Newcastle video, now thats how to fight when your in a relegation battle.

Like you I have tried my hardest to back him over the past couple of years, but just as you suggested, when he gets one injury – instead of replacing that one player – he seems intent on shuffling the whole pack, so you end up with 5 or 6 changes. With regard to Hamill, I’m as baffled as anyone – he was in the zone, playing well but now he has been left out of the squad entirely. And what about Dave Jones ? He’s a midfielder who knows how to keep possession, but his final nail was hammered in by the signing of O’Hara, who has gone from hero to zero in no time at all. Still Brighton have a nice new stadium for us to visit.

Everyone has to wake up at some time and it appears Tim you have – finally!
McCarthy is the reason why Wolves nave been abysmal for some time.
Yes he managed the team to promotion, so I offer a ‘well done’ for that but 2 subsequent seasons hovering in or around the relegation zone is hardly progress since that promotion -
Any Wolves supporter as manager could have achieved that!
McCarthy has served his time at Molineux and come the seasons end his tenure should be ended.
Steve Morgan has big plans for the ground and probably big plans for the club itself but with McCarthy at the helm the team will be an embarrassment to both those ground improvements and the club’s ambitions.
McCarthy’s PL record is well known and he has done absolutely nothing to change what is a pathetic set of PL statistics, only in fact added to them with even more pathetic PL statistics.
IF Morgan has any bottle, he will forget how ‘nice a man’ McCarthy is and do what is right for the club and the team, get shot and employ a manager who has positive thoughts about both football and players and futhermore how to use the correct tactics when they are called for.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s method of using certain players for certain matches regardless of how famous or how much they cost and not playing favourites in any position that is available would serve McCarthy well but as we are all aware, the man accepts advice from absolutely no one. His ideas are the only ones that matter and as a result, everyone is a ‘numptie’ who does not know a thing about football!
    So to conclude my rant.
Whether Wolves stay up or not – and it certainly looks like ‘not’ then McCarthy should be dismissed pronto and a new manager brought in quickly to assess the squad and make the necessary purchases and sales as required.
So who could be in the frame? I saw the name of Chris Hughton mentioned the other day and he could be a good choice but as a long, long shot what about a punt at getting David Moyes from Everton? No chance I hear you say, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get!
2 names to forget at all cost – Sam Allardyce, who would bore the pants off everyone and our old pal Paul Ince who it seems just cannot cut it!

Reading between the lines there is a suggestion that the squad is just not good enough particularly if injuries occur and the 3 Ms collectively have to take responsibility for that.Throughout the close season and even the January transfer window good players became available and although we probably could not attract all of them I remain confident that we could and should have strengthened the squad.I do not believe Jez Moxey when he says that we struggled to get good players because if that was the case then why expand the ground. The level of complacency is ridiculous when you consider how long we were in the wilderness and a drop down to the Championship will be awful. Just look at Southampton,Leeds and of course Coventry who all have superb facilities and good crowds but are all struggling to get back to the promised land. Not good enough.

Like i said before though, Doyle gets injured and we play the worst football we have played this season, that is no coincidence.

The players arent performing, and i could understand Mick sticking up for them when we were losing but playing well, but they really need a kick up the back side now, not a shoulder to cry on. As for the team selection, these players have been dreadful for 4 consecutive matches now, and i honestly beleive that Mick should make wholesale changes, especially to the defence, by bringing in some fringe players. Hopefully that could shake things up a little and potentially improve our form, as sticking with them hasnt helped in the slightest. The only other option i can see is actually telling a few home truths to the players, not sticking up for them. Obviously he may well do this already, as we only know what he says to the press, but from what he says to the press, he makes it seem like he could never say a bad word to them.

Too much chopping and changing what had Hammell done wrong in the first place? Why play Guardiola on the wing he is a Central Midfielder. How does tug a shirt Berra get a place in the team? He may have been good a couple of months ago but he is shocking now.

And play positive attacking tactics, instead of the ultra-defensive display which Mick opened up at Stoke! The lads look like they have lost all confidence now and are resigned to relegation.Im sure Jarvis was tapped up after the England game because the hasnt been his usual self since then – and when O’hara first signed he was postive, attacking and a deadly threat to most teams!!!!!! Now MM has got him playing defensive last lustre football and he seems to look like a defensive midfielder!

We need all 3 points against brum this weekend or we are down and buried, and then possibly west brom could send us down!!!!!!

I still believe we can stay up but MM needs to play a positive team against brum and go out for all 3 points.

I also agree, with most of your comments, but didnt ‘Mick and a few of his players’ say in the E & S, after two heavy, against Newcastle and Everton, well we’ve got a two week break, so we will ‘get back to basics’on our defending etc. Well Mick either your’s or TC coaching is ‘crap’ or perhaps ‘your players’ dont listen, ‘or simply cannot do what you’ve asked of them’? Because on Tuesday night our defence was a shambles except for Hennessey, the whole team didnt look as if they would score if they played all night. They should ‘donate their wages to a local charity’after that disgrace.UTW:

So our Blogger has finally woken up!

Hurray for that. I’ve been saying all this for two seasons now.

One worrying thing. For those folks who think Mad Mick is a great championship manager, well I don’t.

I think we were lucky to go up when we did. Our form collapsed in December of our promotion year. It was only the fact that Readings and Birminghams did too that got us over the finishing line…..

Mick should have been sacked over a year ago. He wasn’t , now this is the result.

Some of these are worthy of there place but he has not brought quality and that to me where MM is week at this level.
Just look at the proven premiership quality Stoke have brought and where they are now.
Jones, Huth, Etherington, Pennant as examples.

We need someone who has a proven track record in the transfer market. MM has lost just over 50% of the games played in the Premier League.

    Bang on, Tim.

However, Mick can pick a winning team. It goes like this:

    In goal
    Hennessey

    Back 4
    Zubar/Foley
    Stears
    Berra
    Elokobi

    Midships
    Henry
    O’Hara
    Milijas

    Wide men
    Hammill
    Jarvis

    Up front
    Doyle

That team, from the United match to Villa, inclusive, won 3 drew 2 lost 1, simply a matter of record.

What’s changed? No Doyle, sadly. Action, replace with Fletch, keep it simple, minimise the disruption. No Zubes, no Big George.
Crisis? Hardly. Foley, Ward, Mancienne, available.

Apart from Doyle, the big issue has been tampering with the midfield and the wide right. Why? What problems was the manager trying to solve?

Mick, if you can’t take our word then heed your own advice and get back to basics. Solve problems only when they arise, in other words if it ain’t broke…fix Birmingham on Sunday. Eight of the winning team are still available.

    Thank you.

Firstly, Guerdioura should be in Karl Henrys position not wasted out on the wing. I would be tempted on Sunday to play them both in the middle with O’Hara on Sunday for the battle with Ferguson, Bowyer and Gardener but otherwise central midfield 3 of Milijas, O’Hara and Guerdioura, Hammill and Jarvo on the flanks.

Sunday is a huge game and we need to win, lets hope results go our way on Saturday and make the occasion even bigger:

    Hahnemann

    Foley
    Craddock
    Stearman
    Mancienne

    Jarvis

I agree that some of Mick’s changes have been baffling and that, the principle you should stick with is: make as few changes as possible. However this can be difficult when players are really below par as, I believe, Foley has been. It’s also the case, as Tim acknowledges, that as fans we never know the whole picture, eg has someone got a niggle, domestic problems etc?. Mick has all this to take into account. It’s far too easy to pontificate from the sidelines when really we have such limited information.

On the other hand, issues such as the balance of the team, playing players out of position, loss of form in an individual player, someone returning from injury too quickly are surely matters for debate.

As a matter of speculation, I have a concern that O’Hara’s inroduction, even though he started well, has somehow caused friction and is perhaps behind his and others’ recent poor performances. If Mick thinks this is the case, then shouldn’t he be dropped, never mind that he is Mick’s latest signing? And don’t we have a full international, Jonny Gorman, who seems to have done well in the reserves, waiting in the wings? If you’re good enough, you’re old enough!

As a supporter of MM through the hard times, I as previously stated claimed exactly this point after the Newcastle and Everton matches.
I fear for MM now and feel that the panic he has quite clearly shown in selection and tactics over the last month, will see him replaced pre season, even if we do perform The Miracle and retain our PL status.
MM has done a great job for Wolves but this last month has confused and left all of us (for and against MM)in complete disbelief.
A cascade of bad decisions has resulted in the snowball effect which leaves us quite clearly staring relegation well and truly in the face.
    Examples of Panic:-

SEB instead of Doyle, then panic when 1.0 down at Newcastle – so went 4-4-2 with Fletch on.Then lost another 3 goals as our defence isnt good enough to play 4-4-2.

Everton we started 4-4-2. 0-3 by halftime.

Dropping Hammill for Guedioura, who clearly is not disciplined to play on the right – keeps coming in middle, suffocating O’Hara and now effected his performances.

Conceded 7 goals in the two games then again showed panic, by changing the defence. Instead of just leaving Foley at RB, Stears/Berra with intro of Ward for George and play the 4-5-1. No he drops Foley, Stears to RB and a clearly ‘very rusty’ Craddock back.
And the best of all brings a unfit Kites back, clearly not ready for this level yet.

MM you have 4 matches to revert back to the team before Doyles injury, with Fletch (if fit)replacing Doyle. If not I fear for your Wolves Career, but it maybe to late for you and WWFC PL status. UTW!!

4 games to go, one point from safety, 2 local derbies – what an exciting time to be a Wolves fan…..

You can do your post mortems at the end of the season but every Wolves fan has a duty to back the manager and team 100% over the next four games.

With a reduce capacity next season it would be great if some of the anti Wolves Numpties that post on here moved their empty support elsewhere.

Never ever give up until you have done everything possible to achieve your goal and at the end of the day if you fall short, take a step back, draw strength on your experience and march forward again.

Success is failure turned inside out.

Wolves have recovered from some very dark days, relegation from the Premiership would be a minor blip in the history of this great club.

Steve Morgan has ambitious plans for the development of Wolves, it is his vision that we become a competitive force in the Premiership, with an infrastructure that will sustain us as a viable entity in the Worlds most competitive football league.

Wolves fans should keep the faith and focus on supporting the team for the next four games.

Over two seasons, MM has succeeded in keeping us in and around the bottom five. He has an abysmal record at the Premiership level – FACT!!! If we survive the present crisis it will be more luck than judgement. Our performance against Stoke was beyond poor and it is clear that there is no confidence. And now we go to Birmingham and it is hard to see any other outcome than the one we have just witnessed.

We have been in the basement for so long it simply has to have a degrading effect upon morale no matter what MM says in public about the temperament of his players.

I noticed on more than one occasion when Jarvis stopped running and his body language reeked of no confidence. I like Jarvis and I enjoy his energy when he is on form. But lets be clear, an England player he is not – I’m glad he got the chance to play for his country but he will never be a fixture on the international scene.

MM has put a lot of faith in too many players that cannot CONSISTENTLY perform at the level required. The Club has to have some proven performers at this level but attracting those players (assuming the owner would even open his wallet to get them) with MM in charge is not going to happen. MM’s record goes before him and is an impediment to improving the squad.

I want us in the worst possible way to survive this mess. However, if we do, there has to be sweeping changes to the coaching staff and a willingness to change the pay structure and playing philosophy. Otherwise, we will suffer another season of poor quality football and inconsistent performances.

    spot on,
all we had to do was replace doyle with blake or fletcher, instead of that he panicked at newcastle by taking milijas off after 30 mins and disrupting the whole team, since that went wrong there has been 2 or 3 moves evvery game resulting in half the team playing out of position and our previous best players like foley hammil, milijas watching from the sides, put together that with the loss of doyle and elokobi and our 6 match undefeated team of 3 weeks ago is completly dismantled.
we finished tuesdays game with 4 center backs in the back four hence hoofing it up and completly by passing ohara.
all we had to do to survive was keep the same system same players, forced to replace doyle with blake then 2 weeks later elokobi with ward,

The whole season we have had a weak back four. Only Foley is consistent and that is only at Championship standard, exert pressure and they crumble (Spurs, Fulham twice, West Ham, Wigan etc…).The performance of the rest speaks for itself!

No need to bring the Japanese situation into it just to magnify your point about how upset you are, Tim. It’s bad taste, mate. However, you are not alone in feeling dismayed.

Can’t say I agree with you in having McCarthy at the club next season, irrespective of which division we’re in. Personally, I’ve had enough of his brand of management: Ridiculous adhesion to his favourites; crazy substitutions; bizarre starting XI’s; mouthing off at the very fans who pay his wages, etc. The list goes on, but the bottom line -even to the most diehard McCarthy supporter, surely?- is:

HE AINT UP TO THE JOB. Period.

Whilst Morgan and Moxey bog off on holiday, Wolves are left floundering, punch-drunk from endless tampering caused by a desperate boss who must KNOW he’s way out of his depth. At least when Sir Jack Hayward took off on his world cruises or simply enjoyed quiet rest in the Bahamas, we knew the old chap had earned his break because he put his WHOLE HEART AND SOUL into this wonderful old club -not to mention a huge slice of his personal fortune.

Okay, Sir Jack got things wrong at times; we all know that. However, his mistakes were honest and fuelled only by a passion to see his beloved club resurrected to the halcyon days of the glorious Fifties. So, we understood and ‘forgave’ him his quirky disposition. The great man showed the way…

    …but what about Morgan?

We barely ever hear a word unless it concerns ground redevelopment or Redrow. Take a quiet, unassuming role, yes, but at times of crisis I want leadership from the top ranks. Instead, all we’ve heard is that Mick’s the man for the job, fullstop. Worse still, McCarthy was backed months BEFORE anyone had an opportunity to assess the Manager’s second season. Well, I’ve heard the old chestnut about how his poor performance at Sunderland could be explained away by a paltry promotion budget of 6 million quid -but that doesn’t wash anymore. Take a look at the relative ‘jackpot’ he’s had at Molineux in comparison. Yet, still the incompetence persists. No wonder so many of you good people have lost faith in all three MM’s. Just remember that Moxey is only Morgan’s puppet, though. I know he only does as he’s told -much as I’m not overly keen on Jez.

Stick with McCarthy in the Championship and he’s a decent bet to bring us back up within a couple of seasons. That’s the good news. Another spell with him running the show in the Premier League will probably result in more of the same dross we’re already witnessing -with the added problem of the fans turning very nasty. That’s the bad news.

I can’t wait for the season to end, now. My enthusiasm is all but spent, thanks to Mick. When it does end, I’d like to think that Mick McCarthy will do the honourable, decent thing and resign -no questions asked. If he doesn’t, then the split within the fanbase could well damage the club for a very long time.

Morgan, you’ve got a lot of explaining to do, old pal. As many fans have already said, there’s ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you’d allow FAILURE and INCOMPETENCE on this scale this to afflict Redrow, so why are you not only allowing it, but practically encouraging it at Molineux?

The game against the Sandwell Tramps was always going to be a white hot affair. If things continue to go badly wrong in the meantime, that game will go off like a bloody sky rocket. We all know that.

My sincerest apologies Mr PeteNuts. It unfortunately never occurred to me to spell correctly of use appropriate punctuation on this occasion.

This was due to my concentration focussing primarily on my lunch and secondly on my entry onto this rather fine discussion.

In case you were wondering my lunch is composed of a glazed ox cheek with purple potato and oyster caviar washed down with a bottle of Bollinger, Grande Cuvee 1997.

Next season the Championship and a NEW manager.
Unfortunately the drop will rule Martin O’Neil out of the equation.
Ian Holloway with his all action attacking style is a much better option than the dire, no tactics, that we’ve had in the Premier, but if Blackpool stay up he won’t move.
Gus Poyet is an up and coming manager with the right attitude but he will already have a team in the championship.
So even if miracles of miracles happen and we survive McCarthy has to GO and be replaced by Big Sam, a local no nonsense manager.

Whatever happens let’s just all get behind the boys this Sunday as if results go our way and we get a positive result we could well be outside the bottom 3 by Sunday evening. Tuesday has gone draw a line under it and let’s out sing the Brummies.

Whether we stay up or not many of our fans feel a change is needed to progress but I am not so sure, I think Mick needs a huge wake up call regarding players who are not good enough (Ward, Elokobi, Vokes, Berra, Hennessey etc)and these players along with a few fringe players need to be moved on and replaced with QUALITY.

If Mick were to be replaced who would be your suggestions? Holloway? Allardyce? Lambert? Gus Poyet? My personal choice would be Chris Hughton if this were to happen.

A Baggie here, just sharing some distant observations …

To an extent, I like Tim’s article, as it shows some real honesty.

That said, I think his frustrations also show, and it takes him into areas he might perhaps regret in hindsight.

I was prompted to write, as I see a number of you commenting on the PAST, especially laying blame on recent mistakes.

I also see others focused on the FUTURE, suggesting a change at the managerial level.

Fact is, with only four games to go, energy spent in the Future or Past is wasted; the only area to focus where you can have real impact, is in the PRESENT.

When I watched you guys on the box against Everton, I was reminded of a marathon runner. That day, you hit the wall, and I could see the energy draining.

After Stoke, I’m not sure it’s come back yet?

Yet, if that Stoke performance was so bad, chances are, you are more likely than not, to be better next time.

But, not everyone that hits their wall can come back; it needs a strategy.

One that runners employ, is the application of a positive external shock, to speed up their system.

In your context, the best external shock that you could give your team right now, would be to all get behind them and lift them across the line at St. Andrews.

To that extent, I can relate to Sir Billy Q’s comments.

Let me leave you in no doubt about who I want to win when we visit you next week.

But, I do hope you can rally to survive, as I’d rather lose a northern or southern team any day, if only to strengthen the West Midlands football scene.

I do feel that if you come together to push your team over the line in the Present, you know what, this Saturday, you may be the curse of St Andrews.

    Good luck

He is completely out of his depth as when at Sunderland. Let the naive continue to support him and watch as we sink further into the mire. He will never quit because he is always right. Whatever happens he needs to go for the sake of the club. Mr Anonymous you need to act quickly and get a new manager in and give them time to assess the squad in preparation for next season. While I tend to agree with what has been said here, we don’t have the benefit of seeing what is going on on the training field.

Guediora, to my mind, has done little to justify a place in the side since his return. The whole right wing thing is bizarre – Foley generally has played well at right back and is a proven attacking option. Hunt scores goals but was overlooked; Hammill looks like he is due a goal but has similarly been overlooked of late.

Sunday is crunch time. A defeat a Blues will send us down, as emotionally I don’t think the team can recover.

Blues for me were shocking at Molineux and are a worse side than Wolves, but results and points are what speak in this league and our relative lack of them makes it hard to substantiate this view.

Let’s get back to the basis of the team that was winning matches only a few weeks ago and make Sunday our cup final.

About time that we had some objective views that are not misinterpreted as anti MM.

I’ve been on and off the MM bandwagon all season. I have however, been consistent in my thoughts with regards to his man management and competence as a PL coach. Until the last four games I could not criticise the teams’ motivation and put this down to MM management. His selection, tactics and substitutions were however, a different matter.

Now the one thing that gave us all hope has long gone, fighting spirit. Tuesday’s game rather summed up the season. Can you remember the first game of the season? We bullied (fairly) Stoke and took three points. I haven’t seen a single tackle in the last four games. We don’t have the quality and when we can’t match a team physically, we’re doomed. What sort of performance was that against Fulham? second to everything and lightweight – to Fulham??? Well, it was men against boys on Tuesday night.

For the past two seasons there has been a chorus of fans saying: Stearman, Ward, Elokobi, Berra, Henry and others are not PL players. Some may have potential and until the last four games, I can’t fault their effort. I blame MM because he should have got in a LB, CH x2 and CM to replace Ward/Elokobi, Berra/Stearman/Craddock. Take your pick re the midfielders. But no, what do we know, we just pay his and their wages and watch the dross, make mistake after mistake.

Now on to formations, he is clueless. Substitutions, clueless and as for selection consistency, clueless.

It is time for him to go, regardless of how things turn out.

Does he have the worst record as a PL manager? If not he must be close. Then what do we really expect.

Time for him to go and the CEO and Chairman as they have stoodby and watched the demise.

The manager must take some responsibility ,but the fundamental problem we have is a lack of quality.Playing players in their so called best positions may help but cannot mask the the overall lack of quality in our squad. The blame for that should be placed at the door of the owner and chief executive as well as the manager. The restraints on budgets and the salary cap has resulted in us missing out on many of the manager’s main transfer targets.Stoke and the Blues have been far more ambitious in the transfer market and the Baggies have benn smarter than us.Until we address this problem, Wolves will never be successful in the Premier league. All season I have been saying on here ‘footballers not bricks’.You should always concentrate on your core business, and in football that is on the pitch.Sadly our owner seems to have other priorities.Mick McCarthy will no doubt pay the price, but the blame should rest with others as well.Best of luck to Mick and the lads for Sunday.God knows we need it.

In reality, whether McCarthy is a good, bad or indifferent manager is neither here or there. The real culprits in this shameful debacle are Morgan and Moxey.

Any Executive Officer who does not take action over a poor performer is just as culpable as the poor performer. The man should have been dismissed months ago. The fact that he was not sacked means that they were also incompetent or they didn’t care. Either way the club is in the same disgraceful position as we are all accustomed to.

A sports correspondent writing in the “i” paper yesterday made reference to what I was writing last week when he wrote (paraphrasing) “A club who initiated playing in Europe will have to content itself with lesser challenges in the Championship”

Tim – spot-on blog, very well said. Unfortunately but like several others, I felt your comment about Japan was in very poor taste. Glad you have apologised.

Sir Billy Quiet – I have always been so proud at being a Wolves fan, but times like this are so frustrating and quite simply – they don’t need to be. I have actually always liked MM, but despite the fact that I don’t see any point in changing things at such a late stage, it looks pretty obvious that all is not well between (some) players and the staff. I have become VERY despondent over the last few weeks at MM’s total lack of brainpower and I really fear for next season – wherever we may be.

I know there have been dismal times in the history of our club, but actually relegation would not be a ‘minor blip’, because I think we would find it very difficult to get back into the Premier league. Morgan has to step in and sort this out – NOW, otherwise he may as well shelve any redevelopment plans.

I am sticking with the my club through good and bad – but there’s been too much damn bad!

If the tactic that is being used at present of hoofing the long ball ball up to Fletcher from the Goal kick and the defenders then you have to have somebody playing off of him.

Also with two wingers who can cross dangerously at least you would have some height in the box.

Hunt at LB would at least give us an overlap with jarvis and he is got to be better than any other option we have currently got.

Beyond that put Ishmail and Gorman on the bench and let them prove what they can bring.

On a plus point I can see us getting a result against either the blues or the baggies and a point against Blackburn.

I rang my Dad up on Wednesday afternoon, still absolutely apoplectic at what I’d seen the night before (the misery compounded by being stuck in that blased carpark until 22.40 after the game!).

Tim, you’ve pretty much transcribed word for word what I said in my angry monologue that my poor old Dad had to listen to, but for the shabby choice of using Japan’s current plight for your analogy.

What concerned me most about Tuesday is this – it took an injury to Steven Fletcher for McCarthy to make his first substitution, when we were already 3-0 down. McCarthy CAN’T have genuinely believed we were playing well enough to get back into the game, because the cold truth of the matter is that while two of Stoke’s goals had more than a hint of fluke about them, Stoke were certainly worthy of being 3-0 up because we were chasing shadows for the whole ninety minutes (bar that little flurry of corners immediately after the third goal).

As an aside, I’m still in disbelief about the reports on TalkSPORT & 5Live describing Pennant’s goal as having taken a “slight” deflection! If that was a slight deflection, then this post is only slightly more than ten words long!

Tim – this was a good blog until you brought in the Japanese disaster – bad taste mate. But the real discussion is our shambolic football team & the meddling that MM has done over the last 4 games …

Is Adam Hammil the new Michael McIndoe? What have you said Adam that has cost you your place in the squad let alone the team?

I think MM has now most definitely lost the dressing room despite all the BS we keep hearing about how together we are – the Baggies players went to their Chairman to say they had no confidence in RDM. What did he do he changed it immediately – memo to Steve Morgan – PICK THE PHONE UP TO JP DOWN THE ROAD & ASK HIM HOW IT IS DONE…

On a brighter note I have been racking my brains out in how MM selects the team & its formation, well I would like to help you this week with a line up against the Blues that you have yet to try.

Ward (he has played everywhere else try here)

Hunt (Left footed should feel at home)

97 (Wall Heath Baggie)- No way am I advocating violence, please be 100% assured of that. I’m a genuine, bone fide fan of many years’ standing, not a thug.

My comment merely referred to the strong possibility that, if Wolves lose both their crucial games to Blues and WBA, then I’d not be surprised to see similar disgraceful scenes outside Molineux to those we witnessed only a season or two ago. I don’t want that -nobody in their right mind would- but it’s a potentially high risk scenario that, even now, the Police will be very well aware of. However, let me also assure everyone on here that I’m not (repeat NOT) implying that our boss would be to blame should such a situation develop. Thought I’d better get that crystal clear lest my words are misinterpreted by someone, whether by accident or design.

108 – (Cuddly Dudley)- Thank you for recognising that I’m merely speaking from the heart. We all hold valid opinions on our beloved Wolves, therefore nobody has to agree with my personal views -I certainly don’t expect them to. I only ever say it as I truthfully see it, as is my prerogative. It’s just a shame that some immature fans on here obviously aren’t yet adult enough to digest and accept differing views to their own without descending into childish mud-slinging. How pathetically sad. Laughable, though.

It may not yet be time to hold an official inquest as such (as you correctly say), but I’ve seen plenty enough by now to have formed my own opinion on the merits -or otherwise- of Michael McCarthy. Whether we ultimately survive or fall will make no real difference to that opinion because I fear Mick has outstayed his usefulness…and I want continued progress, not stagnation. It’s nothing personal because, in many other ways, I like and respect the guy. He’s just not my cup of tea anymore -and Wolves’ fortunes will always come first for me, not the Manager’s welfare, nor indeed, that of any single player. Those lot just come and go on a regular basis. We don’t because we’re in it for life. Once a Wolf, always a Wolf.

However, I’ve always tried to back the team from start to finish on each and every matchday that I’ve ever attended. That won’t change a single jot. I save any grievances I may have for here (and at the pub) -but never at the ground. I’d say that was fairer than fair, wouldn’t you?

131 maltawolves, I agree with you, it is a shame when fans like Farmer Ted have a pop at fans whose comments seem to reflect the performance of the Manager and Team, he once told me I needed to be taken to a game to understand it, after I said that Berra was to slow had poor positioning, played more like a rugby player and was responsible for many goals being scored down the central channel into the box.

Alsoit was McCarthy’s fault for tinkering with the team.

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Of course I like everyone else wants positive results from our remaining games, but that is in McCarthy’s hands

Well said Tim….the only thing i will add is that it’s took MM till the last 4 games to rip into the players after a shocking effort…surely he should have done this before now, too many favourites comes to mind, Andy Bolt in oz…!!!

Actually, my prediction of 6-1 was an aggregate for the two fixtures over the course of the full season, so when we stick five past you at a canter it will still technically be correct.

A West Brom fan trying to criticise me over my humour? What next, a duck telling a donkey, “sorry mate, but you’re braying all wrong”? Why, the very notion!

“Steve Morgan has ambitious plans for the development of Wolves, it is his vision that we become a competitive force in the Premiership, with an infrastructure that will sustain us as a viable entity in the Worlds most competitive football league”

    No.
    Wise up.
He’s in it for the Money, and we don’t matter.

    I must apologise-

as you believe your ‘humour’ is superior to ours, and you predict a 5-0 wolves win this time,I seem to have missed out a couple of things that we have come to associate some of you guys with-

namely arrogance, and the ability to live in a fantasy world.

I see I was wrong about you not being funny-

    you’re actually hilarious!(unintentionally).

Suggest you wise up! nobody in their right mind would take on a football club to simply make money.

Developing the ground and squad (with young players) is a startegic plan to bring stability to Wolves as a Premiership club.

Anyone that thinks this is not a good startegy does not understand the economics offootball.

This is a farce, MM should have gone months ago and to skirt around the issue is nonesense.
His buys alone deserve the chop never mind our performances and league position.
Hate to say it but look at van damme, moulokolo, berra, elokobi, hunt against shorey, scharner, molumbo, reid, odemwingie as just an example. One set of buys is a bunch of over rated championship players at best compared to prem quality or well reserched foreigners who are now worth about 15 times their purchase price.
And then throw in MM versus Roy Hodgson. A bumbling baffoon next to a footballing brain.
If the baggies can take a bold cut throat decison at a crucial time of the season then surely so could we have.
Too late now but MM must go regardless of the divison we`re in next year.

nobody in their right mind would plough millions into a club these days unless they are a fan or on some ego trip.im sure afew americans would disagree with you.morgan is a massive lfc fan who was knocked back.making his money as a housebuilder(redrow homes),maybe his development plans of the custard bowl are to get the bulldozers in,build some nice affordable starter homes and ground share at bescot.not quite milan though

134,Flying Winger, thanks for the support, like you and all other Wolves supporters all i want is to see an established premiership club who eventually can once again compete for honours ie FA CUP/LEAGUE CUP ETC.Unfortunately any comments made about MM however true they may be are always slated by the give him a job for life brigade.MM in my opinion has give his best but a step to far is the premiership and for this club to move onto phase 2 proven management is needed and also some solid investment in QUALITY NOT QUANTITY SIGNINGS.2 massive Sundays coming up we can do it if our best 11 starts.

140 (Kent Wilf) – Dear, oh dear. Tell me: Did you actually read and digest what I actually said? Or are you so anxious to spout your ridiculous, puerile retorts that your haste precluded your common sense?

Put another way, demonstrate to me precisely where I’ve said ANYTHING that even REMOTELY insinuates that I advocate violence? Go on: Quote me if you can. Feel free. In fact, did you even notice Post 132, let alone read it?

Do you actually live in Wolvo as I do? And are you above the age of 15? If the answer to the former is “yes” (unlikely judging by your name), then you’d know the POSSIBILITY for trouble at this match. That’s bloody obvious and not rocket science!

If the answer to the latter is also “yes”, then kindly grow up, learn to accept contrary opinion….and try harder to win an argument at an adult level, child.

P.S. I see you used CAPS LOCKS despite admonishing me for doing the same. Naughty, naughty, child!
