Defender Christophe Berra has declared Wolves’ fight for Premier League survival is the ‘biggest four weeks’ in the club’s history.

Mick McCarthy’s side face derbies against Birmingham and Albion before travelling to the manager’s former club Sunderland, with a final home game against fellow strugglers Blackburn to finish the season.

Although McCarthy’s future is not under threat as he approaches his fifth anniversary, relegation would be a blow to Wolves’ ambitions.

The drop would cost millions in lost TV revenue as well as possibly half the current team, at a time when the club are committed to the first phase of the Molineux redevelopment. The wages of many players would halve.

But, despite their recent record of one point in the last 12, Berra insisted the players can respond to the pressure as they go into the weekend before Sunday’s game at St Andrew’s a point from the safety line.

He said: “We’ve got to stay positive, there are four weeks of the season left which are the biggest for the club.

“It’s where we want to be next season but we’re not going to be going into these last few games despondent.

“As people have seen in previous times, we’ve bounced back with good performances – we could win two in a row or be unbeaten for the rest of the season.”

Berra believes Wolves have the best run-in of their relegation rivals and that they wouldn’t swap their fixtures.

He said: “It’s going to be difficult, but we can pick up a couple of wins. If you look at the remaining fixtures, there aren’t many teams we’d swap to play if we had the chance.

“They’re all teams in and around us and they’re ones we’re capable of beating. We just need to get points and take each game as it comes.  The next one is Birmingham away. That’s going to be a difficult one, but they’re not totally safe either.

“They’re going to be hurting as well after getting beaten 5-0 at Liverpool.”

Berra added the players are concerned, but stressed the important thing was not to panic.

He said: “If you panic, you’re going to be punished. The boys have been in this situation before.

“We all go through periods when we’re not performing well.”
