Wolves boss defiant in fans backlash
Wednesday 27th April 2011, 2:30PM BST.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has stood defiant in the face of an angry backlash from disgruntled fans following the crushing defeat at Stoke.
A 3-0 setback for McCarthy’s men last night left the club entrenched second from bottom, with four games to save their Premier League status.
The Wolves boss was subjected to angry abuse from some of the 2,000-strong travelling contingent of fans as he made his way down the players’ tunnel at the end.
But with a show of typical defiance, the manager returned on to the pitch and made a point of shaking hands with his players in a clear show of unity amid the peril of the team’s position.
Wolves now have away games at Birmingham and Sunderland and home matches with Albion and Blackburn to save their Premier League skins – and McCarthy’s popular standing in the game ensures there are many hoping he can turn the team’s fortunes around.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis said: “Mick will know he has to win his games at Molineux just as we have to do at the Britannia Stadium.
“But he’s a great football man, straight as a die, honest and a great fella.
“I’ve got a lot of time for him and, personally, I hope Wolves will stay up.”
