Stoke 3 Wolves 0

Sorry Wolves were torn apart by Stoke as they blew the chance of getting out of the drop zone on a desperate night where they also lost Steven Fletcher to injury.

Mick McCarthy’s side simply had no answer to the power and skill of Stoke match winners Jermaine Pennant – who was involved in all three goals – and Kenwyne Jones as they went 3-0 down by the 51st minute.

Jones headed Stoke in front in the 16th minute from Pennant’s cross and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made three fine saves, before Ryan Shawcross tapped home a fortunate and deflected second on the stroke of half-time.

Pennant then scored a deflected third as Wolves were caught on the break.

Wolves remain second bottom but the margin of defeat pushed their goal difference to minus 23, the equal worst in the Premier League.

It was an unfamiliar Wolves side that finished the game.

Fletcher departedn the 69th minute clutching the back of his left knee to leave his replacement Sam Vokes and fellow sub Adlene Guedioura as the strikers.

Michael Mancienne switched to left-back, after Stephen Ward had been moved from defence to attack then taken off.

Boss McCarthy made two changes from the side that drew 1-1 against Fulham on Saturday.

Michael Kightly made his first start since a 2-2 draw at Stoke on 31 October 2009, replacing Guedioura.

The other change saw Mancienne coming in for Nenad Milijas in central midfield, as McCarthy opted for extra insurance in the middle of the park.

Stephen Hunt returned from the bench for the first time since his hernia operation at the expense of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who was out of the squad due to his hamstring injury.

Kightly had the first attempt in the seventh minute but, after a clever dummy on the corner of the box, he finished poorly with his left foot.

After a pretty even start, Stoke took the lead in their first serious attack in the 16th minute.

There seemed very little Wolves could do about the goal, which in effect beat their entire back five.

Jones got between Jody Craddock and Richard Stearman to head powerfully down into the centre of the goal from a chip by Jermaine Pennant, who got a yard on Stephen Ward to chisel out the cross which saw Christophe Berra dragged to the near post.

Four minutes later, only a smart one-handed save from Wayne Hennessey prevented a second Stoke goal after Wolves’ left-hand side was penetrated again.

This time Pennant clipped the ball over Ward’s head for right-back Andy Wilkinson to produce a fierce, first-time angled shot.

Wolves had just started to settle and hold down some possession as they appeared to gain an advantage, when Matthew Etherington went down injured unopposed on the far side on the half hour.

The winger was eventually stretchered off to be replaced by Dean Whitehead.

But any inroads Wolves attempted to make were comfortably thwarted by Stoke’s superior physical strength while, with one up front, it was difficult for the visitors to build attacks.

McCarthy decided to switch things and put Ward up front alongside Fletcher, with Mancienne at left-back.

But it failed to change the course of the game, with only the heroics of Hennessey preventing a scoreline similar to Stoke’s 5-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Bolton.

Jones headed over Jon Walters’ cross from point-blank range before Hennessey brilliantly smothered Whitehead’s shot, after Pennant sliced open Wolves’ defence a minute before half-time.

And, after Kightly was booked for bringing down Marc Wilson, Hennessey produced another fine stop from Shawcross’ header via Pennant’s free kick.

But Hennessey could do nothing to prevent Stoke’s second goal which, although deserved, was fortuitous when it came.

Shawcross tapped home the loose ball from three yards out, after the unmarked Glenn Whelan’s daisy-cutter from Pennant’s corner hit Karl Henry’s right leg and rebounded into his path.

Wolves pushed for an immediate response after the restart but, instead, they were caught on the break as Stoke scored a third goal in the 51st minute.

A careless pass by Mancienne was picked up by Stoke and Jones raced goalwards, as Wolves were left three against three.

Jones fed Walters to his right and his cross was met by a shot by Pennant, that deflected off Stearman and into the top corner of the net.

Typical of Wolves, they responded by forcing five corners almost in succession, but never really looked like scoring from any of them.

But Steven Fletcher did hook against goalkeeper Asmir Begovic’s gloves, after Jamie O’Hara’s flag-kick had been headed back into the danger area by Ward on 55 minutes.

From another, which Matt Jarvis worked short to Henry, Berra headed over from inside the six-yard box.

However, Wolves were a sad second best, as Stoke made a mockery of McCarthy’s pre-match instruction to keep clean sheets.

We are pretty much doooomed!! It seems that nobody wants to go forward on the attack. Even O’Hara hangs back. We need a different game plan. IMO it doesn’t matter to the 3ms if we go down, you know why?? Because molineux will still be a sell out most week, we will be a top 6 side, we have sky money etc etc.. So it doesn’t matter to them… The only reason I renew every year is because I LOVE this club, I love the people I sit by BUT I cannot explain how angry I am at this clueless manager we have, it’s a disgrace and as I’ve said ALL SEASON we are going down.. I hope your happy Morgan and moxey for sticking by your man and not listening to 90% of fans about mcclueless, I hope your happy to be taking my £376 again next year and I hope your happy for not going and getting big sam, a man who would of had us save by now…

Anyone who defends this manager after watching this rubbish is not a true fan and needs to hold their head in shame. All season playing favourites, players out of position and changes the team every week! Although it hurts to say it west brom did the right thing at the right time changing their manager I only wish our owner had the balls at the time!

After being in the bottom three for most of the season we are now playing like a relegation team. The failure to bring in experienced quality players when we had the chance has caught up with us. We have simply not progressed.

We look like a team without leaders and our confidence is shot. The successes against Man U, Chelsea and Villa seem a long, long while ago.

Unless something miraculous happens now we are doomed.

Very, very disappointing and it could and should have been avoided.

Is anyone else as angry as I am tonight to see such a debacle, another team selection, the same result, tactics what tactics, Ward lost again and moved defence to attack, then eventually off the field.

No shots on target, no midfield, no defence! Thank god that Hennessey made some good saves, O Hara has also lost the plot.

2-0 down, no change at half time until we get an injury then another change 70 mins.

For the “Mick in we trust” brigade, sorry guys this has been comimg since December and you have all been in denial when he should have been sacked,No defenders purchased before the season started let alone in January, but I also blame Morgan for not making the decision.

Well as long as MM continues to play that ‘clown’ Ward at left back,we’ve got no hope. Stoke played everything down the righthand side with pennant/Etherington swapping to take Ward to the cleaners. The bloke ain’t even a good striker, let alone a good DEFENDER. Im so bloody angry,in all the years ive followed Wolves, whenever we’ve had the chance to move up,we LOSE the game. So much for people having a go at Hennessey, without him it would have been 5-0. Ive said all along MM isn’t and never will be a PL manager. Roy Hodgson was there for the taking, a PROVEN manager with Fulham,he took them to 6th got them in the Europa Cup Final? What better credentials do you need to be classed a proven/good manager? So why the hell didnt MORGAN get him in,instead of P-ing about with his sodding ”QUALITY BRICKS” As a so called football person, who’s followed Liverpool why as he put up with this CLOWN of a manager???? I wouldn’t let MM manage my local Co Op, he’s clueless totally clueless, and dont get me started on his No2 TC another x crap player, even worse as a coach. Bite the bullet Morgan give Poyet/Wilkins a go next season,at least under those two you will see proper football 1-2 touch ,not the crap you see under MM/TC, or even give Alladyce a go for the last Four games? Im just amazed to see our negative tactics against a Stoke team that is best faced by an attacking side. Mancienne in the first 11 in front of Guedioura, i was really dissappointed.

We had the chance to pass other teams, had nothing to lose but comes out with a defensive team..If it was not for Hennessey we would have lost 6-0..

Ok, i can give them that the second and third stoke goal are a bit lucky to say the least but they had so many other shots so i guess they deserve the luck.

Please Mick, the tactics bit you have to understand more..copy this team against Birmingham on sunday:

    Hennessey

    Foley (RB)
    Berra (CB)
    Craddock (CB)
    Jarvis (LB)

    Hunt (LM)
    Guedioura (ACM)
    Henry/Milijas (DCM)
    O’Hara (ACM)
    Hammill (RM)

    Fletcher (CF)

Why not Jarvis left back, he has the pace and never gets passed..we need to tighten defence and strengthen attack..i know this seems a little desperate but why not try, we have been under par some games now..

The good run we went on before the international break was down to playing a settled team. Yes we lost Doyle , but now why change the midfield and defence for the sake of it? Mancienne with Henry in midfield is a proven failure already witnessed this season – no forward thinking and no creativity – why drop Milijas again?. Why has Foley been dropped and why was Hamill dropped? I thought Mick had finally learnt something but the selection in the last 2 games proves he has not learnt a thing. The blind followers will again chastise us all for daring to be critical and in some cases I have already seen actually blame Matty Jarvis for everything rather than acknowledge the manager may have made a mistake, but I support Wolves and will do long after the manager and players have cleared off. Time to own up, admit your mistakes and go for it at Blues or hand over to someone else as we still have a chance.

I have been a staunch supporter of McCarthy since he took over. Remember where we were at that time? He’s achieved great things in his time at Molineux, notably a superb work ethic and (when we were in the Championship) some great attacking, free flowing football. So I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon at this late stage by calling for his head. BUT: Tactics tonight and on Saturday were awful. We all know it may well come down to goal difference at the end of the season, so why not go and play with the most defensive set up possible and simply spoil the game but take a point, which away to Stoke would be perfectly respectable?
Both tonight and on Saturday we’ve seen utterly baffling selections for games of such magnitude, ie Guideiera, Mancienne and Kightly starting games when they’ve been out for months and cannot possibly be match fit; Stearman at rightback- why?
Such selections are the hallmark of a manager who has played his best hand to no avail, and is now desparately experimenting with random combinations, hoping one of them may just happen to work.
I think we’re down if we don’t get 3 points at Blues, but if so, let’s give Mick the chance to come straight back up and, (sorry 3 M’s), but if we do get another crack at the Prem we have to swallow our principles and just get on and pay Premiership wages. I think the young and hungry policy has been excellent and should continue, but staying in the Prem means playing at not one but two levels higher than the championship.

I’ve never been one to slag off players, manager etc etc as I believe we have to be realistic sour our hopes and ambitions otherwise we would all support man u, and I am very grateful to big Mick for getting us up on a shoestring and make us a exciting young team full of passion (90% of time), we all know in past years the crap we signed on big bucks in the twilight of their careers, but now I’m worried, when we stayed up last year and beat Stoke at home on the first game of the season I was truly chuffed, but what the he’ll has gone on, facts please
1, we spent 18 million in the close season, Barr hammill (who must have upset someone not to play), we have not really seen any return, we were the third biggest spenders too,
2, we are joint bottom in goal difference,
3, we have just played 3 average teams, 2 at home, I don’t think 4 or 5 points would have been greedy, we get one with four games left and concede a bucketful of goals
4, moxey I worry we won’t be in the prem next year, so the balti pies to fill tour ample frame will have to be purchased from farm foods and the wet look gel from the pound shop
5, I fear Martin o brill would have kept us up as woy hodgson has done down the road,
Sorry folks, the future is not bright and not orange, I struggle to see our motto, out of darkness cometh light
    Fingers crossed

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The useless managed by the incompetent. Hat and scarf gone into the loft and that’s where they are staying until this excuse for a management departs.

All the bravado, mission accomplished, job done, muppet knows what he is doing. All bunkum and hot air. As far back as the 1970′s we have been landed with incompetents on and off the pitch.

From Hoddle with Frankoski (icing on the cake) to this latest excuse for a manager. Millions wasted on rubbish. Just think of who Muppet has brought in, done nothing and gone.

Started with Halford (familiar face he said), through Van Damme, Bia, Castillo etc etc. Millions down the drain spent on dross.

This is what he calls consolidation. Most of the blame must lie with Morgan who has consistently refused to sack him. Just goes to show what ambition he has for the club.

On TV before the match he was telling the players to relax and not worry. Well the scoreline certainly proves they were relaxed enough.

Anyone buying an earlybird for next season?

We are as good as down. The confidence has disappeared from the players and the fight has gone. Mick picks his best mates not his best team. Our midfield tonight was a disaster, Stoke are renowned for their big powerful battlers and he plays lightweight Mancienne in the middle. Kightly was hopeless, not surprising since he hasn’t played a full game for over a year, O’hara wasn’t interested in tackling leaving Henry as our only physical player in midfield and we were overrun, leaving the defence exposed time after time and Fletcher isolated. Why mess with the midfield and drop Hamill and Milijas and replace them with two players who have hardly played all season? Why drop Foley when the weak link in the back four is clearly Berra? Why don’t we cut out crosses or tackle forwards instead of letting them run at us? I think we deserve answers because the mood amongst the fans began to turn tonight and I’d hate Mick to be driven out by the fans after what he’s done for us but now is the time for Morgan to grow a pair and act.

I don’t like to critise the managers but what on earth was micks plan for tonight? Ward against pennant?! surely you need a players with pace to keep him at bay. And Kightly starting ahead of guedioura?! He’s been our best player the last 2 games The last 2 games continue to changing the formation over and over again. Pick a formation and stick to it! Our defence was again a shambles, I thought elokobi’s injury was a blessing in disguise but stearman and berra are just terrible!

These lads need a wake up call, because at the moment there is no desire at all. What happened to the wolves we saw earlier in the season?! Hate to say it, but it looks like micks lost the lads.

Usual story. When Wolves win the doom-mongers stay silent but after performances like yesterday’s they all come out to criticise. I know that Wolves were woeful but its when things are going bad rhat we have to support the team.
Many clamoured for Craddock to come back, but what stability did his presence create. Nothing. The first goal Jones scored was when he headed in from between Craddock and Berra and the third was a deflection by the veteran siumilar to the one Arsenal netted in their 4-1 win at Molineux last season when it was Craddock again with the deflection.
And what about the second goal. Pure lucky guy as the ball was going wide he put out a foot and it was at the back of the net.
I say that Stoke won by sheer physical strength as this is their main weapon.
Surely Wolves have to play a lot better to beat Blues on Sunday. Anything can happen.
Look at United yesterday they overwhelmed Schalke yesterday on their own patch after the latter out-gunned the champions Inter twice.
So keep the faith as the other teams are still in the same boat.

As sorry a Wolves performance as you could hope to see, particularly when it matters most. When I looked at that team I knew we were going to lose. Against one of the most physical teams in the league he puts Mancienne in midfield.. hardly a dominating presence. Kightly was a golden boy two years ago, I feel sorry for Hammill. We also let in over 50 goals in the Championship in 08/09 with the very defence that played tonight (perhaps Foley played instead…)

I feel so let down by the lack of ambition, desire and guile tonight. None of them looked interested. This is a club that should be in the top half, but a team that looks to be heading where it deserves.

Oh well, what do I know, I’ll always be a Wolves fan no matter what, so I guess I’m just a ‘numpty’.

Can’t see us winning another game this season – altho’ I hope I am wrong! I fear that on current performances we are going down. If this happens MM should go … and take Connor with him!

However, even if relegated, I fear change is unlikely because things seem a little too cosey between the 3 Ms in the Molineux boardroom. Even the most fervent among us has to admit that this was a sad day in the history of this Club. Our first half performance was wretched all over the park. We seem to have regressed severely over the last four games. If Hennessey had not had his wits about him it could easily have been a 6-0 drubbing.

There is clearly no confidence – our efforts to go forward were miserable especially in the first half when their keeper did not have a save to make. I wish I was paid a tenner for every backpass to the keeper – I could comfortbly afford my retirement!!!

The ownership leave me befuddled with their grandiose plans for developing the ground – the investment needed to be on the pitch. We need Premiership quality players – hardly any of our squad qualify on the basis of this performance.

Try as i did to be positive, I could not figure out what our game plan was tonight. Mancienne should not have been on the field. He was useless and lightweight. Jarvis has become completely ineffective and O’Hara must have aborigine in his blood as he went walk about tonight. Admirable as it is that Kightly has got back to fitness, he was lost in this battle and should not have started.
We can why Pulis got rid of Henry – no more to be said!!!

As much as I dislike Stoke City, Pulis has to be credited with progressing his team – there are now real signs that they can play football combined with their physical presence and strength.

MM has failed miserably to progress the squad – we will be playing back where we belong next season but, hopefully, new team management will be in place. MM , on any measure, has failed and must face the consequences.

I will support my team and the old gold and black as I have always done but I cannot support the management’s approach.

This result doesnt change my position, but what is really worrying is that we dont look remotely up for a fight.

I went to the fulham game and all the midfield apart from henry were passengers. Ohara looks half fit and hasnt got the sharpeness to get up to support fletch. Jarvis should have been on the bench today with Hammill starting as he just looks tired and everyone knows hes a danger so he is very well marked.
kites should be out on loan.He has never played in the premiership before and cant be expected to make an impact after 18 months out injured.

Sad, very sad. He has to go, regardless of what happens this year. We do have some decent players, but they cannot get into the team, none of the players we have bought have improved, in fact many if them have gone backwards.

No threat to Stoke tonight, o’Hara and Jarvis suddenly struggling under the burden of having to cover for our fullbacks. Now Fletcher’s down too. Seen some criticism of Wayne Hennesey in some of the posts on this site recently but he is probably the most improved player we have, and he saved us from a hammering tonight.

Presumably Adlene G. was left out because he keeps trying to score, and that does not match our game plan, similarly Hamill has been seen in the opponents half, cannot do that too many times.

Tragic, we’ve put in enough good performances to show we should not be in this position. Give us a coach who thinks we can win every week.

I hope the team finds some belief and inspiration from somewhere. I hope our manager actually comes up with tactics that are not so negative or rely on the long ball.

The reality is that we look like a team shot to pieces, the manager has lost the plot and we will be lucky not to finish bottom.

Anyone brave enough to come on and say “Mick’s the man”, probably, even though he is by far the worst Manager in Premier history; 1 win in every 5.5 games, 1 point out of every 5, 80% loss rate, 2.2 goals conceded every game on average, with 0.75 scored, drops 5 points to rivals like West Ham, Stoke,Newcastle and probably West Brom/Blackburn; 6 points lost to the likes of Wigan; That’s not the full story, by and large the tactics and use of what are very limited players have been at times shocking, even bizzare; He should have gone 18 months ago, just look at really ambitious clubs, Bayern sacked thier manager, they were 5th, 1 point off Champions League with 8 games to go, Albion, too got it right havent they ! Blame is also to be spread amongst the supporting cast, the Coach, Fitness staff, scouts and the two at the top, did they want relegation so as to cut the wage bill and cash in on the the few players worth a few bob, then bring in more 3rd,2nd,1st Division players on peanuts, whilst making a profit with Parachute payments for 4 years to come, hoping to be in top 6 Championship, to keep the mug punters interested? ( look at Middlesborough Morgan, crowd 15,000 officially, taht was including season tickets, there were less than 10,000 in the ground against Coventry, Boro had 35,000 ave in the Prem!); The manager exudes an air of depression and cynisism, never happy with his lot, always got an excuse as to why he is not the problem, he is; As for Henry winding up the opposistion with his recent rants, you couldnt make it up! Bring in Sam, a £2m bonus to stay up, at least he might sort out that defence by playing the youth team squad ! At that rate we get one more point this season and finish on 34 points and a goal difference of minus 32, that means MAD MICK is named Premier League Manager of the Year in the eyes of Morgan and Moxley. A bit of advice to QPR, Cardiff and Norwich, don’t look at buying Wolves players when you get promoted as I can’t think of anyone that would benefit you.
CUSTERS LAST STAND: Today is Wednesday morning and there are four days to the match against Brum. I demand that MAD MICK is sacked and for the last 4 matches do a 4 match contract and bring in one of the two or three managers constantly mentioned, pay the guy Half a Million quid so that he puts the players through the wringer and we may get the 2 wins that may keep us up. If not, then I suggest Morgan and Moxley pack their bags and head up the M6 to Alice in Wonderland land.

Wolves were undone by a team and a gameplan that just didn’t work. Some individual shortcomings: Kightly played well enough the first 15-20 mins, later almost absent (e.g. on the second goal); Stearman looking very insecure and without confidence on RB; Ward and Mancienne together failing to prevent Pennant’s cross for the first goal; Craddock and Stearman failing to close down Jones for first goal; O’Hara lost form (and interest?). Then, there were decisive collective shortcomings: Bad passing, giving the ball away and feeding Fletcher and Jarvis scraps to work on; bad positional play preventing any flow and speed going forward; then passing the ball backwards for Hennessey to hoof it up (or out of play); failing to work together to close down opposition; midfield totally outplayed/outmuscled. And so on and on. And finally, some suspected tactical shortcomings: Playing Kightly, and later Guedioura and Hunt, none of them really up to it after beeing injured; changes in line-up leading to unbalanced midfield and disorganised defence; no Milijas, no Hamill, no Foley, no answers, no inspiration.
Positives? Hennessey, most of the time. Henry, some of the time (I know a lot on here won’t agree). Mancienne clearly improving after beeing moved to LB.
Personally, I hadn’t expected to get much from this game, but neither to lose by three goals. Let’s just hope Fletcher’s injury isn’t so bad he can’t play against the Blues. Needless to say, we can’t afford any more of the kind of performance offered last night. UTW!

As a fan of a team that has been in this position more times than I like I would like to offer my sympathy for what you are going through. The only consolation is that it is very tight this year and a win would change everything. However team confidence and belief will be at a low and luck hasn’t been on your side. You’ve had good games where you’ve played well and lost. You have rarely been out of the bottom three, a situation that we have been in many times and your next two games will really be tough. Both Blues and us will play to win since we also need the points. I wish you luck as I would like to see all the Midland sides in the prem, including Walsall, then maybe the media will take Midland football seriously.

You’re currently ONE point behind the safety line, only Wigan are showing better form than the bottom five. Blackpool, West Ham & Blackburn are all suffering poor form. It’s in your own hands!! Forget inept management, you’ve four games to save your season against winnable opposition. WTF is all the negativity.

The time for moaning is not now it’s at the season’s closure, you CAN still do this. If not you can hound the manager out but for four games unite your club. Do it for West Midlands football, do it for the Derbys next season, most importantly do it for yourselves, in the knowledge that you guys could do no more.

Mad Mick picked that team, that team was sadly, un balanced and outfought, the same as when we played away at, Blackpool,Wigan,West Ham,Newcastle, these teams are not even established in the Premier League.
Its time to play Mancienne at centre back along with Craddock, its time to play real fullbacks in the correct position, and its time for an attacking midfielder like Guiderera to replace the static Karl Henry, If Hunt is fit then he should get the nod over struggling to get fit Kightly.Stephen Ward is not a centre forward! McCarthy YOU should know this, not read it in the PAPER!

Dart board selections – pin pictures of the players on a wall throw darts at them and the first 11 hit are in the team. Get rid today and appoint someone with tactical nouse and not a person who has built a career on one liners and wise cracks. There are 2 people to blame for this fiasco, Morgan for dithering in not having the guts to get his trigger finger out, and McCarthy for his total lack of football knowhow.

Stay-up or Go-down he is for the chop i reckon.

A far as players go, well lets start building the exit list (not by choice) :

    Hennessey
    Hahnemann (possible retirement)
    Craddock (possible retirement)
Zubar (back to France rather than CC)
    Jarvis
Milijas (wont stay for 2nd flight football)
    O’Hara
Mancienne (back to chelsea, then another prem)
    Doyle
    Fletcher

Plus how many others are on Premiership wages and dont deserve them (e.g. Mouyokolo)

Where does that leave us in terms of the squad ……. uh oh !!!

Well what else can you expect when you play 4 players in the same side that have hardly kicked a ball in the prem of late against a tough uncompromising prem side. One you can get away with – and in Craddock we do at least have a level headed leader. But tell me – how on earth Kightly can be picked over Hammil (who was playing well wehen dropped)when he is barely match fit, why Mancienne – who in my opinion is just one kick away from calamity – instead of Milijas who at least can create something – and why Ward at left back – where a lot of our goals have been conceded this season. Contradicting what I have said slightly – I would bring back Hannehman just for his experience for the last 4 games behind Foley Berra Craddock and Stearman – play 5 in midfield inc Hammil on the right – and whoever is fit up front !!
Still believe we will stay up – but we have made bloody hard work of it.

On the positive side, it is still in our hands with blackburn still to play at home, thats it though. No positives on the pitch at all. The defence is a shambles and has been for 5 years, foley should be at right back he has only had one bad game. We dont have a left back because mick wouldnt/ couldnt sign one in january! Stearman has potential but berra, craddock and by the looks of it mouyokolo arent good enough. Mancienne is not a midfielder and i doubt he ever will be. How negative are we. We need the right balance in the midfield. milijas o hara and henry for me. Although henry isnt up to this league long term. Why no hammill again, he was playing well and gets dropped, now not even in the squad, nice one mick. Cant beleive what has happened over this last month after our mini revival. We have to be more direct, 65% possesion and done nothing with it. Seems as if we just want to slow the game down and frustrate teams but our defence and midfield arent good enough to do it. Having watched the game on Sky summary would be
    - negative team selection
    - negative tactics
    - negative performance
    - inevitably leads to a negative result!
Looking back on the season everyone has their opinions on individual players which you could debate forever – however management need to review overall strategy as we have obviously failed ti improve as our constant presence in the bottom 3 has proven.
    Some things they may wish to review are;
    - effectiveness of huge amount of money spent over 2 seasons versus other clubs around us (Dave Jones would surely have appreciated this level of investment last time around)
    - tactical approach
    - team selection in terms of consistency and playing individuals in their correct positions
    - position of club at year end versus overall plan as surely we must have had Premiership survival as a minimum objective and a “Stoke” position as a realistic objective.

If on reviwe the board are comfortable with achievement versus objectives the it is their perogative to maintain current management – if not they should make changes and for next season clearly explain the club objectives to the fans and review progress against those objectives!
IN ANY BUSINESS IT IS CALLED MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVES!

And the hard facts of what a few on here have been saying most of the season are coming to fruition. We have never moved forward from last season and therefore we were always going to be in danger of finishing in the bottom three.
The biggest problem now is MM doesn’t know his best team and he is meddling. Kightly is not match fit and now is not the time to get him fit – he has the close season for that. Hammill should be in.
And how many times have we said on here that you cannot play Henry and Mancienne in the same team…..???
We have a clueless manager and head coach – oh, sorry assistant manager, who are out of their depth at this level. The players have now lost confidence and we need two wins from a difficult four games to ensure survival. Things will always look pretty bleak after a result & performance like that. More worrying than the result to be honest is another injury, we can still do this, as our Albion friend at 100 said, we’re only a point adrift. But we could do without losing Fletcher on top of Doyle & SEB already being out.

We can still do this, one point to make up, 4 games to go, we have proven this season we are capable of getting points in this league.

Use this page to vent your frustration at last nights result & performance, but lets use the stories that come in the next few days before the Blues game to get behind the team & be positive.

For two seasons the squad have been expected to compete at this level with a very suspect defence that shipped goals for fun in the Championship.

    THE TRUE PICTURE

Well fellow Wolves fan’s, it’s clear to me what path MORGAN has taken with Wolves….

… Last Season, stayed up through default

… Spent 17 million start of season to apaease the fans (spent poorly)

… Morgan decided to go ahead with bumping his investment up, by pumping him money into new Stadium on the cheap

… Despite promises that it wouldnt affect Wolves bid to stop in the prem, we didnt invest in Jan e.g Bought Van Damme, sold him again, didnt replace him as money went elsewhere is my guess

… it was clear we needed a new manager (Big Sam, Chris Haughton, even Woy Hodgson have better records than Mick), & Some PREMIERSHIP experianced defenders.

… Preparing for chumpionship football for a while i imagine Morgan has, with his puppet Moxey doing a great job of pullin the wool under fans eyes and getting away with it.
    ……………………………………….

What ever league were in next year, i would still like to see a change of Manager & coaches, Moxey, you need to rip up that wage cap too & stop thinking about your bonus, & Morgan, prepare to spend to get out as it wont be as easy as you think to get out, oh & Mick…… Thanks for where you have taken us, but were as far as we can go under you, step aside please.

Well Well Well – Another defeat by 3 goals No leadership on the field The same defence that we had in the Championship and non existant tactics

So in truth What do we expect?

Didnt MM and Co learn last season that we had problems with our defence and because of that we couldnt field a 4-4-2 against most teams in the Premier League?

Can this man not see that the likes of Elokobi and Ward are simply not good enough against most Premier teams? Ward is a make shift left back and Big George gets caught out far too often!

As for tactics – Nearly all decent teams have full backs and wide players working together – supporting and covering in attack and defence – the same for centre halfs and central midfield players – So what happens with Wolves??? The term ‘box to box’ springs to mind for midfield players wide or central

Far too often the communication between the players appear non existant – Which leads me to say that the requirement for 5 quality Prem players was required to enhance our team this season and especially a players who can command and instruct players – a buy imv that would have made a major difference to our youngsters!

Whats the point in buying Fletcher when he only gets a game because Doyle is injured? Wouldnt the money been better spent on making the team far more solid? Imv this squad seriously lacks players in far too many departments to play 442 in the Prem – which we have seen far too often this season

There are players who we could/should have brought in But this falsehood by Moxey to not pay 5 Prem Quality players the going rate has shown that what we have cannot cope

The excuses used to suggest ‘not bankrupting’ the club also are so apparent – We could understand this if we were trying to bring in players on Tevez money etc but not just 5 Prem Proven on better money than our Championship squad – Hunt Doyle Myokololo Fletcher all players who have played in teams that are now back in the Championship

Imv these 5 Prem Proven additions would have helped our youngsters get to grips with Premiership life Just the same principle as a rookie learning a trade working next to an experienced hand in any business

Yes we have 4 games left and I hope for the best but this is self forefilling prophecy – we will reap what we sow – Unless we get lucky!

We desperately need wins – and I dont care how

    Up the Wolves!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, all you players should stop talking to the press and do your talking on the pitch. I’m sick to death of the “we’ll give them a footballing lesson” or the “we will be alright and stay up” quotes etc etc. We were unlucky with two of the goals last night as they were both down to deflections, however we didn’t deserve even a point on that display. I advocated Mancienne as left back (which he moved to in the second half) but his display in the first half (were he was playing as a defensive midfielder), seemed to me to be completely aimless, time and time again he just seemed to clear the ball upfield, to on one in particular, with the result that the ball almost always came straight back. In short we were clueless, toothless and hopeless. MM asking the team to remain unbeaten!! We will be lucky to remain unbeaten for one game let alone the four remaining!!! What is even more galling is the fact that the baggies seem safe now, when on paper (at least) I thought we had a far better team. I lay the blame fairly and squarely on the management, the Baggies were in dire straights like us, in comes Hodgson and look whats happened to them now. I admire Mick for some of his qualities, but I reckon he would make a far better assistant manager to someone else.

In the season when getting relegated with all the poor teams in the league, would take a Magician’s touch, Merlin has certainly been busy casting his “we’re all doomed” spells ! How has it come to this, chance after chance, ‘must win’ after ‘must win’ games lost due to incompitence, lack of skill, stupid errors etc: ‘Stears’ get your pre-match routine ready for the early kick-off Sunday; Hairdresser, Manacurist, pedicure kit, Turkish massage hairy bellied man in a loin cloth, Brut 33 or is it Hiya-karate, but hey man, that on pitch couffuring has to stop geezer. Embarrassing
Match Stats said it all last night.

Morgan at fault for letting situation go on so long, considering development ahead of team building. Surely he needs to show some leadership qualities.
What is Moxey to blame for, other than carrying out the Chairman’s policy?
Not Wards fault if he is not good enough, the manager picks him to play out of position.
MM picks the team, and probably needs to move on.

Well, it’s always darkest before dawn.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments of Simon (87) ulv (97) and Kentish (128).

Hopefully, a serious post mortem will be held and the following points addressed:

    1) No-one except McCarthy talks to the press to avoid stupid comments that act as a motivation to the opposition.

    2) Jarvis has been a shadow of his former self since his England debut. He’s almost playing as if he wants to avoid a potential injury ahead of a move in the summer. Replacing him with someone who has spent the best part of two years injured is not the answer. Hunt and Hammill on the wings please.

    3) Please stop saying how great the central defence has been – they believe you even though the stats don’t lie. Only Blackpool, West Brom and West Ham have conceded more and all of them have scored more than us

    4) When we were getting plaudits – and decent results – we played attacking football. Now that the pressure is on and we need points more than ever, why have we reverted to loading up the defence/defensice midfielders (with the result being 11 goals conceded in 4 games)?

Birmingham have had their confidence shot after a mauling at the weekend. Please don’t make it easy for them by playing too defensively – it has never worked for us (how many late goals have we conceded this season?). With Zamora and Johnson on the bench on Saturday, why was it necessary to move more defensive for the last 30 minutes and invite pressure on us? Please learn from the mistakes you make

Have not played enough football to be involved in the way we have to play to get out of this mess he has created.

O’Hara didn’t want to know last night & is clearly thinking of being else where.

I’ll ask the question again, what has happened to Hamill????

And I have never seen a left back switched to centre forward in a match before, 442 for us just doesn’t work, yet thicko keeps trying to play it, in the last 4 games we have conceded 8 & scored 1 while we have been playing this silly formation, yet McCarthy thinks we look a better team for it, how’s that work????

GUEDIOURA IN PLEASE has been great 2 matches now in a row..HAMMILL IN and FOLEY IN at RB!

Kightly not up for it yet.. Jarvis at LB so we keep up the pace at both wings..HUNT IN at LW..

Get some adrenaline going and play some attacking football so we dont get pressure on our defence all the time!! But that requires midfielders with some technical skills!! not mancienne who clearly is a defender and everyone sees that!

This is my opinion and im sure more people agree in some of my ideas…

Rather than congratulate us, you’d rather revert to condescension and belittlement based on getting 2,000 more on the gate in the last 20 years from 4 times the catchment area.

Blues & Stoke never won nuthin yet getting Wembley glory. The Baggies survivin coz they had the guts to sack a failin’, manager whilst Morgan didnt. Maybe Morgan should make McCarthy manager of Redrow. See how long he lasts then! 5 years in charge, millions spent and right back where we started. As i’ve said a thousand times McCarthy aint a premier manager. Never has been never will be. He can’t find solutions to simple problems, Yet thats the main remit of his job!! An utterly embarrassing, pathetic ‘performance’ unworthy of a so-called Premier League outfit, yet it’s also a sad indictment of just how much Mick McCarthy has lost the plot. He fielded a joke line-up yet expected a result. Honestly, how anyone can keep stomaching this total garbage week-in, week-out, yet still feel the need to gratuitously back-slap Mick, God only knows. I’m all for solidarity within our beloved club, but jeez, this nonsense just has to stop. Morgan’s blind and deaf, though.

And yes, despite it being MICK’S fault for choosing the unbalanced line-up, the players still DESERVE to take criticism. There’s simply no excuses to be had for sheer ineptitude, yet that’s precisely what they served up. Despite that, McCarthy still shook their hands, even though good, hard kick up the backside was probably more warranted. One for himself, too, wouldn’t have gone amiss.

All the same, I’ll be backing them right to the bitter end as all genuine fans should do. However, I’d back the moon to be made of cheese before betting on Wanderers to survive the drop if last night’s fare is anything to go by.

Still, at least it’s nice to know that some fans feel too greatly hurt about our impending relegation. Keeping McCarthy in his cushy job is probably more important to them than Wolves survival prospects. Yes, quite amazingly some folks really DO think we still owe him a huge debt of thanks for our promotion, despite his fat pay cheque and virtually guaranteed managerial position.

Five years on and our defence is as bad as ever. If that aint dreadful management on the part of Mick McCarthy, I’d sure like to know what the hell is.

Mick, do the honourable thing and walk, ffs.

Why does M.M leave out players players. Ie Hamill? Is it because the supporters are offering suggestions and that, I am suggesting , in part he is saying to you,”I pick the team.”. I do not suggest a manager getting the sack because they are losing matches ,but, on a performance base, how many matches have Wolves won in the Premier League.? Would Steve Morgan allow his company to perform on a weekly basis as his football team does? He would soon root out the problem

Yesterday’s match showed the capabilties of the Wolves Football Club in general. It was clueless. The crowd back the team every week and in return the perfomance is below par for most games. I looked at the two centre backs and they just did not know what to do?
