Karl Henry has focus on a clean sheet

Captain Karl Henry has urged Wolves to go back to the future in their battle to stay up.
Almost exactly a year ago Wolves went to Fulham and virtually secured their Premier League safety with a 0-0 draw. Twelve months on from that stalemate at Craven Cottage, Fulham come to Molineux with things a lot tighter in the survival race.
But Henry believes Mick McCarthy’s side need to show that same solid look that saw them concede just once in four games as they look to bounce back from the heavy defeats to Newcastle and Everton.
“I think the way we’ve got to approach it — which is the way we’ve been doing it all week — is that we want to be more solid,” said Henry.
“Clean sheets are massive — if you keep a clean sheet, you’re guaranteed something from the game.
“There’s no shame in doing that and we’ve got to believe in ourselves that we can score goals, but not by going gung-ho.
“If we do that, everyone is excited for 20 minutes, but then we can concede two or three goals. We want to attack, but with some thought that if we give the ball away and the opposition breaks, we’ve got numbers back behind the ball and they’re not going to score.
“Blackpool play like that — their games are end to end and they score a few goals, but they concede as well.
“Maybe we’ve been guilty of that ourselves in the last couple of games, and that’s certainly not the way we want to go about it. Going gung-ho isn’t going to get us out of our situation.
“We can’t afford to concede four and then try to score five.
“I don’t think we’re a good enough team to score five goals every week — it’s going to be ones and twos and we’re going to have to defend properly if we’re going to stay up.
“It’s what we’ve been working on for the last couple of weeks and hopefully we’ll show that against Fulham.”
The last two defeats have sparked a ‘back to basics’ approach on the training ground from boss Mick McCarthy and Henry believes it was just what the doctor ordered.
“I think we needed to go back to basics — some of the defending in the last game especially showed fundamental, basic errors that we shouldn’t be making at this level,” he said.
“We needed to be reminded of how we play so we’re all on the same page.
“I think we’ve done that over the last two weeks and I’m sure we’ll all be better prepared for it.
“We go into the game knowing that first and foremost we’re going to be solid, difficult to beat and score goals against.
“We have to get back to that because this league is so unforgiving — no matter how well you play, a second of madness with someone switching off and you can be a goal or two down.
We can’t afford that to happen so we must get back to getting difficult to beat.”
Those losses to Newcastle and Everton have led to the Molineux masses beginning to doubt their team.
And Wolverhampton-born Henry admits Wolves must win their public over again.
“Speaking to people outside the club, a lot of them seem to think we’re doomed,” he said.
“I certainly don’t think so and no-one here does either. We’re in the thick of things — if we beat Fulham, we can be out of the bottom three with a game in hand.
“If that happens, the feeling will be ‘Wolves aren’t going down’.
“We’ve got six tough games now but all of them are winnable.”
The defeats have triggered plenty of strong words between players and management staff alike.
But Henry insisted it’s ‘good to talk’.
“A few harsh words have been exchanged, but that’s a good thing and morale is still high,” said the midfielder.
“I don’t think we can go through the season losing games, conceding goals and making mistakes without saying things to each other.”
