Fighting talk as McCarthy vows to beat the drop

Bullish Mick McCarthy today breathed new life into Wolves’ survival hopes when he declared: “There’s never been a better time to be bottom and get out of trouble”.
Wolves go into tomorrow’s clash against Fulham at Molineux bottom of the table and two points from safety after successive heavy defeats.
But boss McCarthy believes he has put things right on the training ground and remains adamant his team will get out of trouble.
“There has never been a time that the bottom team could feel so confident that they can get out of it — which we are,” said the boss.
“It’s so tight still and it’s in our hands.
“We’ve got a game in hand away at Stoke on Tuesday so there’s still everything to play for.
“Everyone still thinks they have a chance of getting out of it and we have to maintain that belief.”
McCarthy hopes he has ironed out the defensive problems that have seen Wolves concede seven in two games.
And he believes a solid base and a return to the form that helped them secure safety this time last year is the only way forward.
“Let’s hope it was a two-game blip,” he said.
“We’ve worked on being solid and trying to keep a clean sheet and let’s hope it works.
“There’s no point leaving the back door open.
“It’s important to stay in games and not concede because when you do, it’s tough to get one back.”
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is fit after coming off at half-time against Everton with a hamstring injury.
“Sylvan’s trained for the last couple of days and he’s fine,” said the boss.
“And Sam Vokes is back after his loan spell at Norwich.”
McCarthy confirmed Vokes and fit-again Stephen Hunt are in a group of 21 players he will whittle down to 18 for tomorrow’s game.
Meanwhile, McCarthy reacted with irritation when asked again about Bobby Zamora’s broken leg sustained against Wolves in September.
“Has everyone forgot Adlene Guedioura broke his leg?” he said.
“We hear about that one — it’s dragged out from breakfast time to supper-time, but I’m happy to say Adlene is back playing again after five months out,” he said.
