Captain wants no regrets at Wolves
Thursday 21st April 2011, 3:00PM BST.
Wolves captain Karl Henry has warned his team-mates – don’t end the season with regrets.
Mick McCarthy’s side go into Saturday’s home clash against Fulham bottom of the table after heavy defeats to Newcastle and Everton.
Henry wants another three wins this season with their 32-point tally only two from the safety line.
However, they have a game in hand on the rest of the bottom seven after Birmingham’s 3-1 defeat at Chelsea last night dropped Blues one place to 15th on goal difference.
McCarthy’s men also have arguably the most favourable run-in of the relegation rivals, with all their opponents left currently occupying places from 11th to 16th.
And midfielder Henry said: “We’ve got what it takes to get the wins we need to get out of the position we’re in. But we’ve got to prove it.
“We don’t want to be looking back at the end of the season with any regrets – the chance is there for us.”
The skipper also urged Wolves to get the three victories as quickly as they can.
Like McCarthy, Henry believes nine more points from their last six games will be enough for Premier League survival.
He said: “They are all winnable and we still need to meet our target of three wins from the six.
“Anything less might not be enough to keep us up. We’ve just had two big disappointments but we’ve got to bounce back again for these last six matches.
“We want to get those points as quickly as possible.”
Wolverhampton-born Henry also urged the fans to remain behind the team, after admitting the players need them more than ever before in the run-in.
He said: “The supporters have been behind us all the way and we need them more than ever for the last six games. We all need to be together.
“We’re all working our socks off every day in training to do everything we can to prepare for what’s ahead.
“We’re in a position no one wants to be in but we’ve got to deal with it – and show our character as individuals and as a team.”
