It’s win or bust for Mick McCarthy

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy believes it’s win or bust time in their Premier League survival mission.

McCarthy reckons the clashes against Fulham, Stoke – their game in hand – and Birmingham over the eight days from this Saturday will go a long way to determining if Wolves stay up.

He said: “It’s a huge week for us with the games we’ve got. I think what we get out of these three matches will be a determining factor.”

For a while McCarthy has believed three more wins will be enough to seal safety, but the manager now reckons it could be less after defeats for West Ham, Blackpool and Blackburn at the weekend.

Hammers boss Avram Grant is also targeting three wins, but they have one game less than the six Wolves have left.

McCarthy said: “That would be remarkable because he’s talking about a 60 per cent win success rate. If we get three wins out of six, we’ll stay up.

“But will we get those three wins? Looking at what’s happened this season, it’s unlikely.

“It can be done. But I’m a realist – I look at the other teams and think they’ve got five games left so let’s say they get a point a game, then 38 might be enough to stay up.

“We can all speculate, but no one has a clue how many it will take. My view is just to try to beat Fulham.”

Despite going bottom, McCarthy remains convinced Wolves will stay up.

He said: “There are enough teams still in it and the games we’ve got are tough but winnable ones.

“As it is one win could take us out of it. In terms of being bottom, it’s not like any other season.

“Whether you’re in the bottom three or 17th, 16th, 15th, no one is certain of getting out of it this time.”

In the round table with Messrs. Houllier, Hodgson and McLeish, McCarthy said:-

‘We are second bottom of the table but does that make me a bad manager? No, I don’t think it does. But you lose your job because of results’.

Due to the results of others, we are now bottom of the table. And yes Mr.McCarthy, I think it makes you a poor Premiership manager.

You are the man who has chosen this squad and I think I’m right in saying that you’ve had more money to spend over the last few seasons than most of the managers in the bottom third of the table. If you choose players who are not up to Premiership standard that is your fault alone. If you choose players who are error-prone that is your fault too.

You are the man who decides the strategy and the tactics. You are the man who chooses the team on the day and you are the man who makes the substitutions. How many times this season have Wolves supporters been left scratching their heads in bafflement at some of your decisions?

The only mitigation can be injuries to key players and yes, you’ve had and are having your share of those, but any more so than other managers in the basement area?

We are now backs to the wall and the drop is a very real possibilty. The only consolation is that if you had to pick one manager to get you promotion from the Championship it would be Mick McCarthy.

He’s a very fine Championship manager.

The problem is always going to be next year. IF we stay up, what then? Mick buys players in that he then does not play, preferring the Championship team too often in place of players we have shelled out money and hope for. And will it be another season of struggle – Stoke have turned the corner, we should, but I’m not sure Mick has the calibre to do that.

Going down it will be a case of who stays. Doyle gone. Fletcher? Jarvis most likely. So we are left with…………the Championship team again. Either way, Mick looks happy as he keeps the player HE wants.

Stay up or go down, he has to go. Simple as that. Wolves need a manager who can cope with and provide success, someone who understands that tactics are not small mints. Someone who doesn`t try to be a comedian when what is required is sensible facts by a very knowledgeable group of supporters. We are not numpties or nuggets. He should show more respect and humility.

I think the penny is finally dropping with a number of fans that Mick isn’t the greatest of managers and the club isn’t quite as well run as the 3 M’s would like us to believe.

Gone even is the argument we are debt free having pushed the button on taking on millions in debt to fund an expansion of the stadium that isn’t needed, yet.

The 3m’s have carefully maniuplated fans with their choice of words. How can any of us forget the ‘Young and Hungry’ policy that was spouted for a couple of years to cover the fact we werent spending a lot of money on transfers. Most recent is the ‘Top 5′ finish bla bla bla, to cover the fact we are going to change the manager, no matter what happens.
A classic case of diverting the attention away from a poorly performing team.

The way the club is run is a shambles from top to bottom.

Not one single youth team player has come through under McCarthy, and in my opinion we have an abundance of talent that isn’t being used. Criminal, truely shocking.

A shocking transfer policy too. I reckon we’ve had 3 maybe 4 good buys in McCarthy’s era and 2 dozen poor buys.

And now, gone is the financial prudence that the club has been run under. We are now saddling the club with debt, which we will all have to pay for as ticket prices will have to go up.

I’m sorry, but the writing has been on the wall. McCarthy is a poor premiership manager
and has expensively assembled a poor excuse for a premiership squad.

The opportunity to change things around in January was spawned by the club, and grabbed with both hands by the Baggies. Well, look at us now.

We are now hanging on to survival by a thread . I hope we survive, but even Mad Mick is now fearing the worst, having been naively confident througout the year.

    You reap what you sow.

It isn’t a case that it should be win or bust for Mad Mick- it should be win or P45.

I could accept if we were just a poor team, but the reality is Mad Mick has thrown this season away.

It has been crying out for Hahnemann to come back into this team for weeks or months and impose himself on a back four who will actually listen.

If we go down it is due to Mad Mick tinkering, not dropping his love child from LB early enough in theseason, his persitence in bringing his love child on at every possibility and in not replacing Van Damme at LB.

There are other tactical problems that Mad Mick has as well, but it pains me to go into his poor use of substitutes and treatment of Fletcher.

Several years ago, when we were still enamoured with Mad Mick we went to the midweek game at Sunderland- think they beat us 3 or 4/0 and one Julio Arca did the damage. The Sunderland fans told us how he tampered and fiddled and had not got a clue and we were completely disbelieveing of them.

It really is time for a change and if Morgan is really serious in building this club up- I cannot imagine he wants a half empty stadium, then stay up or be relegated we need a new manager.

My preferred choice would still be O Neill.

One home game and two away in that period, so don’t expect too much, and the season doesn’t end there in any event.

You do realise, the reason we are going forward with this stadium expansion in phases is so we can stop whenever we want. For example, if we are releagted, its a gaurentee that we will not start phase 2. I really didnt think that it was that hard to understand.

The young and hungry comment, isnt anything to do with rose tinted glasses. My comment was 100% fact, the policy did get us promoted and it did keep us up, thats fact my friend, nothing to do with oppinion or preferance. I also know that if we do get relegated, we will get rid of a few of our players, but we will also hold onto a few, the same players that managed to get us promoted as champions, so im optimistic that the young and hungry policy would help us straight back up, rather than having to start from scratch like we did last time we were relegated.

If we go down, we go down. In this company it doesn’t make us a bad football club, with poor players and a naff manager.

That said, there’s all to play for still. I think we’ll win at LEAST 2 more games this season, whether that will be enough depends on the results of others, though….

Ward is a great left back ? Mick is doing a great job? Henry should be playing for England?

Come on tell me, I’m dying to know!!

I honestly think that if the club didnt have happy clapping numpties like you we wouldnt have any problem at all staying up ,but its idiots like you that have no opinion of their own that mean the club can get away with whatever they like!

I’m not sure what ill informed drivel I spout, but please do enlighten me.

Is it that I think we are hanging by a thread for our premiership survival ? mm well, we are bottom with 6 games to go.

Is it that I think Ward is useless? Well, so does pretty much everyone else.

Is it that I think Mad Mick is out of his depth? Well, err, we are bottom!!

Is it that I think building the new ground at this stage is foolish ? Well, err, the plans do include taking on a £15 million pound debt secured against the club.

IS it that I think McCarthy’s transfers have been on the whole poor ? Err, well, we are bottom.

Now, as for you, I think Ill informed drivel sums you up very nicely.

Given the last two disastrous results, we will be fortunate to get anything out of the match with Fulham. Fulham have a pretty settled team lately and have Zamora back. Hughes has got this team playing the way he wants it to and they are a hard prospect for any team to play.

As usual,it is difficult to see where our goals are going to come from and the defence has been an absolute shambles lately. And I am not sure that the two week layoff has been of any value to the team.

If we get a point that will be OK in the context of the game but it could be another nail in the coffin if all the other results go against us.

no28Brummie Rob, if we sell players for £25M and only spend £5M on replacements you can expect a long stay in the Championship. The fans, especially ones like you who go home and away deserve better. There is also a serious risk of debt given Steve Morgan will be itching to go ahead with phases 2 and 3.Don’t forget he has only spent Sir Jack’s legacy so far.

if we play against fulham like we did against newcastle and everton then we will lose 3-4 goals, these two bad performances have come at the wrong time of the season and could affect team morale.
the 3 games over easter period will decide our future…we need minimum 6pts from the 3 games.
i fear other teams will pick up points so we will remain in bottom 3
i’m hoping blackpool and blackburn continue to struggle but think the 3rd relegation spot is between us, wigan and west ham.

Spot on 41 Phil Smith. The muppet and his sidekick should have gone at Christmas. If he was working in Industry or commerce and wasted £35 million, it would be P45 time.

The tragedy for Wolves is this incompetent is fireproof. He could take us to the Blue Square league and he would still be getting backing from Morgan who has also turned out to be a waste of space. Morgan appears to be no different to Bonser at Walsall. Likes the idea of owning a club but has no commitment to it.

You are not renewing your ticket. Don’t blame you, who in their right mind would pay top money to watch a bunch of useless no hopers with an incompetent as a manager?

The same old story for a great club with a wonderful history being sold down the river by useless management on and off the pitch.

Looks like I will never see Wolves in Europe or lifting a cup ever again. Enough to make you weep. Totally brassed off.

There should be quality back up.
Blackpool aside, other clubs are rich with Internationals as back up let alone 1st team players. This team is a Patchwork quilt of players who will be struggling for a new club next season, Doyle/Jarvis/Ward/Ebanks Blake/Fletcher/Henessey aside?
Poor management, trying to stay up on the cheap, ground redevelopement more important than the team/supporters.

I can understand the frustration of supporting Wolves, we all wish we were in mid table but it hasn’t worked out like that – it’s called sport and there are winners and losers, we haven’t been relegated yet! this Premiership season is the toughest yet there are no bad teams.

Lashing out with negativity never achieved anything – 25,000 Wolves fans on Saturday giving 100% support will…..

72,I cannot agree with your comments, yes there are winners and losers, the losers generally have no game plan, ambition, spend money unwisely, have a poor manager and leader on the field.

They do not consolidate their position and improve their effectivness.

This in our case has to be landed at the Chairman, and Manager of the club, who are paid vast sums of money, much from the fans to acheive success, in our case I think most would have settled for modest success.

Best team for 20 years arguable?? Premier league team? Not a chance Bottom and going down.
We may have beat teams like Man Utd and chelsea. Why did you not mention Wigan or the performance last week against Everton.
We are very very poor. We have players that are not close to nor never will be premier league quality and a manager out of the same box.
I admire your loyalty but face reality. At present we are simply not good enough and never will be unless someone rings the changes.
It won’t be long before we’re reading your comments about getting behind the new manager.

and I and 5 of my friends and family will be amongst those there on Saturday supporting Wolves but….. I still think MacCarthy should be sacked at the end of the season irrespective of which division we end up in!

People on here should realise that even if some fans criticise the manager and the players on this message board that does not mean that they will not support them for 90 minutes on a Saturday for the greater good of the team!

    36 The Real London Wolf

So we should blindly support them irrespective of performance – I’ll give it a go . .. . .

ahem erm ‘that’s it boys keep it up – more of the same, well done – yes I know we’re bottom and losing 3 – 0 but keep it up!’

    The Usual Suspects

72 SBQ Comments on here negative or otherwise doesnt make a jot of difference to MM or the players

MM and Co identified last season that we couldnt play 4-4-2 in the Prem due to weaknesses in defence and midfield (quality players were required or even better tactics imv)

We’ve always had a problem at left back and with Elokobi – an average Championship player and Ward – a makeshift left back most Prem teams must be rubbing their hands!

Putting in a shift and enthusiasm is NO substitute for better quality in the Prem

Most better Prem teams appear to have their respective full backs and wide players work together when attacking or defending and their defensive and central midfield players working with their centre backs and communication is always key!

Wolves have clearly lacked this in most games and although beating the ‘bigger teams’ have been enjoyable – the clear lack of consistency is apparent – Who do we blame for that the fans? the players? or the manager and his team of coaches?

If we cannot afford to purchase better quality defenders then WHY change a formula of 4-5-1 that helped keep us up last season by a canter – WHY tinker with a formula that works? Or as they say ‘If it aint broke WHY fix it?’

Our position and inconsistency must firmly lay at the feet of the manager – and the lack of improvement must firmly lay at the managers door?

Imv If relegated MM will stay in the hope he can get us back up again – survival should imv mean that Wolves and Morgan seek a manager with Premiership pedigree that can develope us into at the very least a mid table team

As far as which players stay or go as a result of relegation or survival – well in any business casualties are natural and we cant dwell on what might have been – NEXT

Finally these are my opinions and observations and as a concerned Wolves fan like everyone on here we are all entitled to say what we believe – whether agreeable or not

    Up the Wolves!

My humble veiw is that its probably to late for us now, we have been in the bottom 3 most of the season i dont think thats going to change in the next 6 games. we have already lost 6 pointer games against Wigan Blackpool, west ham, thrown points away to WBA & Bolton, a plus point though when you look back at this mad season is Man utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man city, Villa have all fallen on wolves sword what a great load of memories we have to take into the next campaign probably a division lower but will get straight back up stronger and wiser & more hungary,

    Stoke- Defeat
