Wolves boss hails Jarvis’ England cap

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today hailed Matt Jarvis’ England breakthrough as a watershed moment of his Molineux reign.

The manager and assistant Terry Connor were in the 80,000 Wembley crowd to watch Jarvis win his first cap with a 21-minute appearance in the 1-1 draw against Ghana last night.

McCarthy sees the moment as symbolic in the club’s recovery from the trough of 2006 when he was appointed, arriving at Molineux to find a threadbare playing staff and a club in danger of losing touch with its heritage.

Wolves had 14 call-ups during this international break and they have a further five full internationals back at Compton working towards full fitness.

And the advance of Jarvis from £650,000 bargain buy to the England stage is seen by the manager as a marquee moment in Wolves’ revival.

McCarthy said: “It just shows the change in the club since July 2006. The team and the squad of players – everything has improved and I’m glad it has.

“It’s brilliant that we’ve got all these internationals and it’s even better still that we’ve got one who’s played for England, because when all is said and done, that’s the benchmark.

“If you’ve got England players in your squad then you’re a top team. Just look at the rankings. Look at where England players come from.

“Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Villa – clubs who have finished in the top six in recent years.”
