Matt Jarvis’ vow on England future
Wednesday 30th March 2011, 10:00AM BST.
Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has vowed ‘this is just the start’ after winning his first England cap.
The 24-year-old made his debut as a 69th minute substitute for Jack Wilshere in the 1-1 draw with Ghana last night.
And wearing the England shirt in front of a Wembley crowd of 80,102 immediately gave him the taste for more.
Jarvis, who has kept his number 15 shirt as a memento, said: “Fingers crossed there will be more to come, but it’s given me the appetite for more.
“Hopefully this is the start. It’s what you dream about and you want to represent your country and it’s a fantastic feeling.
“I want more – but I’ve got to make sure I play consistently well for Wolves and make sure we stay up.”
Jarvis couldn’t wait to get on the pitch, which made him the first Wolves player since Steve Bull in 1990 to win a full England cap.
He said: “It was fantastic, a great feeling, hard to describe, but I’m delighted.
“I had my mum and dad, fiance, my brother and his wife, and all my mates from back home there – it was quite local for them coming from Guildford, Surrey, so there were quite a few cheering us on.
“There were a few Wolves fans and the Wolves gaffer, Mick McCarthy, and assistant boss Terry Connor, came down so it was great for everyone to be there.
“When I came on, I tried not to get nervous. I wanted to get a touch and show what I could do.”
Jarvis revealed he was encouraged by national boss Fabio Capello before and after the game.
The wide man said: “He told me to ‘go out and enjoy it.’ It was my first international experience and I wanted to enjoy it and I did.
“Afterwards, everyone said ‘well done, congratulations’.”
Jarvis believes playing for England will only help his and Wolves’ survival push.
He said: “Hopefully playing for England will give me a lot of confidence and the club.
“It’s going to be great to go back full of confidence and enjoy the rest of the season.”
Jarvis didn’t take long to settle down.
He said: “I was trying to get my first touch and, after that, I was delighted with how it went.”
The winger also backed Wolves to cope with losing Kevin Doyle.
Jarvis said: “He will be missed. But we have got a great squad and whoever comes in will do a fantastic job.”

Nice work, Jarvo – did not set the match alight, but no disgrace either.
As an aside, did anybody else find it rather tiresome how the commentary team kept blathering on about how great the Ghanaian fans were? As I recall, they booed all of our substitutions and when Danny Wellbeck came on they booed every touch and made obscene gestures at him for having the temerity to choose England over Ghana! It’s like, African fans are more than capable of being just as idiotic as anyone else…
Report abuse
Congratulations, Jarvo! Hopefully, there’s lots more to come.
Congrats… huge milestone and some great touches.
I guess it must have been difficult given the fact that you are used to playing with better team players around you ;)
Well done Jarvo!!! Hopefully the first of many caps!!
Jeremie Alidiare???? We don’t need him, we have more than enough suitable cover for Doyle.
Well done matt we know at wolves how well you play we see you every week.Wolves will be in the premier league next season with you in it.
Congratulations Matt, let’s hope it’s just the start of an International career..
It was a decent game for a friendly, probably because Ghana wanted it and the England team had players who wanted to show what they could do.
Much as I hate saying this, why are Villa in a relegation battle ?… it can only be mismanagement. The Villa players in both internationals looked very good.
In our relegation wish lists and fag packet calculations it may be better to let Villa go and hope they beat Wigan, Baggies and West Ham (even Stoke)
On the other hand their fans were so cocky and arrogant at Villa Park before we beat them it would be very appealing to see them playing Doncaster, Brighton, even Peterboro next season.

Very well done, Matt. Now you have had your well-deserved recognition, build on it by dazzling a few more full backs as we march up the table to a safe haven. UTW.

well done matt, nice to see a wolves man back in a england shirt

8) I normally like what you have to say but must respond to you about Villa. Why are they in a relegation battle? Firstly, there defensive record is worse than ours. Friedel and Dunne are not the players they were, for starters. Players do not like the manager and the three players that you are obviously praising up – Young, Bent and Downing – were non-existent against us the other week. Give me players like Jarvis, Hammill and Doyle any week. Good, honest professionals. Not money grabbing prima-donas!

no.11-well said, why can’t Young play like that for Villa? perhaps he wants a move and he thought he’d be in the shop window.
Well played Matt for the time he was on he was fine.

So as it stands, we have a Welsh international goalkeeper and an American international as our #2 goalkeeper. Our right-back is a Republic of Ireland international, our central defensive pairing are a Scotland international and someone who is being spoken of as a future England centre-back (provided he stays English) and our left-back will surely get the call-up from Cameroon soon – and if he’s not fit, we can play a Northern Ireland international (out of position).
We have a Republic of Ireland international, a full England international and an Under-21 international to call on on the flanks, and a Serbian international and an Algerian international in the middle of the park, and up front, a Republic Of Ireland international, somebody who could be a Scottish international if only he was willing, and an England under-21 international.
Heady times indeed for the Newhampton’s local football team…

congrats matt, hope you can go on and win more caps and do wolves proud.

Jarvis played great last night. Really chuffed.
I enjoyed watching the team without all the “big” players….
And well done to Ghana and their supporters for making an ordinarily dull friendly in to a cracking game of football!
I too would like to add my congratuations to Matt’s England debut. Coming on late in the game it was not going to be easy to make an impression. I thought he did OK without doing anything sensational, and seem to fit in with the other players.
Now that that his first appearance is out of the way, hopefully he will get a chance to shine in another game from the start.
Well done Matty, when you came on you didnt show you was nervous, and i thought what you did you did it well, the more game time you get for England the more confident you will become. You’ve proved that players dont need to cost £20M+ to play at International level, you’ve come a long way since your (peanuts )move from Gillingham, and are now looking the top class player, we at Wolves always thought you could/would be. Also we should be saying the same about Adam Hammill, who the night before made his England U21 debut, another lad we got for peanuts, whose looked very good since his first game in a Wolves shirt, we are blessed at present at Wolves that we’ve got some very good ‘young’ players who can play at the highest level for many years to come like Stearman who ive stuck up for many times on here, yes he’s made mistakes and given sill pens away and got Red cards for his errors, but at least he’s kept his head up and worked very hard to improve his game, and now looks a good solid pro,’who could’one day join Jarvis/Hammill? Even Karl Henry? The hardest part will be keeping hold of them? As the big clubs will no doubt come and ‘cherry pick’ our best players, should we get relegated, but i think we’ve got enough good players to keep us up,players with skill and players with bottle who will work for 95mins every match. Also well done to ALL our players who’ve played International matches over the weekend/last night. UTW:

Just on a totally different subject, I have just read on Wolves website that MM is looking at the striking options for Saturday, he said he has 3 quality strikers in Doyle, Fletch and Wardy………..Wardy?
Well done Matty, another one of MMs buy’s that has become an international with more to follow, we don’t need to sell so if /when the minnows come knocking tell them the second word is OFF.

While we’re on the subject… It’s not really necessary to vow “this is just the start” after your first cap, generally most people can figure it out.

11) Brummierobwolves.
Hang on, that’s EXACTLY the point I’m making ! Young, Bent and Downing were awful against us at Villa Park. I’m not “praising them up” I’m just pointing out what everybody saw in the Internationals.
So, why the difference in performance ?
It’s symptomatic of the problems Houllier has created with his tactics and team selection.
No team is too good to go down, as has been proved a number of times, but, if Villa do it’ll be because they’ve been totally mismanaged.
Allowing Young to wear gloves ‘cos he wants to play with Rooney and Berbatov next season ?
The man’s lost it !

Many, many congratulations, Matt. I was proud as punch to see you make your England debut at 9.28pm last night. Congratulations to the gaffer and coaching staff at Molineux, too. It’s been a real pleasure seeing this young player develop from a very promising young kid to a full international.
No need to tell matt to keep his feet firmly on the floor -he’s already showed himself to be a model professional so there’s no way he’ll get above himself.
All we need now is to see the same kind of loyalty that we saw in Bully. Okay, it’s a long shot, but who knows? This is a very special club with very special fans who know how to look after their Molineux idols.
Here lies your invitation to join the Gold & Black all-time greats, Matt…

Obviously fantastic for Jarvis last night to see him holding his own on that stage. Didn’t look out of place at all. It’s also fantastic for the club and shows the coaching staff & the whole set up in a very good light. Hopefully it’ll help us when we’re trying to recruit other top youngsters that they can see Wolves is a good route to international football.
On a side note, sad to see Lescott in such a state. He looked big & clumsy last night. Man City appear to be quite quickly ruining the poor lad.
Well done Matt, well overdue.
Now, as our best player by far, and considering the squad we have at our disposal, less Doyle of course, would love to know as our match winning winger who you would prefer to play with in the forward line.
Hope the ‘muppet’ consults our best player especially Ebanks V Fletcher, and I was a betting man, he would pick Fletcher every time.

Brilliant Matt! Lovely touches. You really looked the business. Keep on waving for the ball too!

Jarvis played as well as anyone could have expected, considering he only got 20 mins in an unfavoured right midfield slot!!! Well done son…

13, Petenuts. Thanks for that info, can I just add…
Considering where we were in 2006 when McCarthy joined us, you have to say Mick has done an incredible job.
In my view, Mick is becoming to Wolves what Fergie has become to United. The press and players, even the commentators last night, always refer to MM when the club or one of its players has media mention. He has well and truely embedded his name into Wolves FC.
It is nationally recognised how hard the Wolves players work for him and Jarvis running out for England lastnight encapsulated everything Mick has installed into our wonderful club.
Would Jarvis of played lastnight if it were not for Micks guidance and football ethics since he signed him from Gillingham?
Should we stay up this season, Wolves are rapidly on the way to becoming a very well respected Premiership club. We are almost truely back to being the club we used to be before our decline in the early 80s.
Thanks Mick, you are certainly the best manager I can remember at Wolves and well done to all the Wolves internationals who played their part in the highest level of competitive football this last week, you all deserve your call ups for working so hard together.
Well done Matt, hopefully we will not have to wait another 20 years for a Wolves player to grace the England shirt.
Did just fine in those 20 minutes, it was the most competitive ‘friendly’ I have seen in recent years and I was fearing the worst with the tackles that were flying in!

One of MM’s better buys!! a real Wolves success story – well done to Jarvo and the club!

Congratulations Matt Jarvis!!!
I, like all other Wolves fans was so proud when he came on last night, hopefully this will be his first of many England caps. I thought he did well too, didn’t give the ball away, showed good control and did some cleaver interchanges with Milner down the right.
We need 4 wins from our last 8 games now to stay in the Premier League so we can keep hold of players like Jarvis, O’Hara, Doyle and Milijas.
Come on lads I know we can do it, would love to see blouses, the vile and sandwell go down that would make my season.

21) Not having a dig at you mate. You talk some sense unlike many idiots on here. Yes Houllier is a clown but I am not going to be one to praise up Ashley Young. He was lively but also made an Iwelumo miss last night. He has a chip on his shoulder and is very much a diver and is most definitely trying to get a move to Man U, Liverpool or Spurs.
Jarvis did not look out of place. Stay up, which we most certainly can, sign up O’Hara and about 4 others and Wolves will have a strong squad. Wolves ay we!

Very proud of Jarvo and this time next year I wouldn’t be surprised to see Stearman and O’Hara around the squad aswell.
Great news about Guedoiura who I feel is the best central midfielder at the club and Hunt who is great to bring on with 25 mins to go and unleash him onto a tiring defence, he relishes games like the Tescos and Blues etc.
I can’t wait for Saturday although its a five hour trip from where I live It’ll be a shorter trip home with a positive result! I’d start 4-5-1 and change to 4-4-2 if required.

Congratulations to Matthew Jarvis on his first cap. I can’t see him getting as many caps as Englands no.1 Scott Carson but good luck to him.

Anyone who say’s Mick will pick Ward over Fletcher & Ebanks-Blake: you really are in cloud cuckoo land. Yes, for some strange reason Mick does rate him. But not more than a player he payed 7 million for or a striker who was top scorer in the championship 2 seasons in a row & is also our top Premiership scorer this season with 6 goals. Newcastle have only won 1 of there last 5 Premiership home games & we will take them apart the way we have been playing. We’ve won 3 drew 2 lost 1 of our last 6 games in the Prem (& that was away to Arsenal)
I’m confident that we will run out winners & that’s why Ive staked £250 on us to beat the Geordies at 3/1….Going to sit bk saturday & watch the money roll in!!!

Am I alone in being really very excited about the coming few weeks? I can really see us pulling off a Phoenix-esque rise up the table and leaving our troubles behind us. We’re galvanised, confident and I can see goals coming from several departments. I feel it in my Newhampton Bone, which I keep sweet by feeding it wine.

Already that pic of “our” Jarvo coming on for England is my desktop background and WILL NOT BE REMOVED!!! But anyway….Matty ya a jewel in the Gold & Black crown we all love and breathe!! I was so very proud of you wearing that shirt and representing your country, club, family and all those who have helped you get to where you are now. BIG HUGE HUMONGOUS thankyous to MM and all the coaches for making Jarvo into the player he is today. When we signed him he showed how good he was, he fits in nicely to any team and he proved that again for England last night! Oh my…..words I only dreamed of ever saying or typing….”Jarvo in a FULL England shirt on his debut”….oh man if i died now i would die happy :)
Love da Wolves!!

Fancy Jeremie Aliadiere back anyone?

Well done to the flying winger, I cannot believe that some fans still think McCarthy is good, he has taken us to the bottom of the league!!! Because of Injury to Zubar he plays Foley in his best position at last, he continues to play Berra who is useless, Henry had two decent tackles in our last game otherwise he went missing all game, gave fouls away, nearly cost us a goal, argued with the Ref’s decisions, now we have an opportunity to re establish our true strike force of Fletcher & SEB, I doubt we will take it, as he is too thick to see we have to score goals to make us safe.
I have no confidence in his ability even when circumstances are forced on him.
I wish Doyle a speedy recovery, but 1 up field is not the answer, and to drop back as we did in the last game after 65 mins nearly cost us the game again.

46, bit old that comment now, however table dosen’t lie!!!

A bit disappointed he wasn’t played on the left..
Reminds me of our last full England cap before Bully…. Anyone?
…OK it was King John Richards, solitary England cap, funnily enough playing out of position on the wing – hopefully not a portent of things to come!
As for the table doesn’t lie, there are lies, danm lies and statistics! At the end of the season we could easily be up to 10th, the league is compressed so much! That wouldn’t really tell the story of our season either!!

39) Very funny. If England had to rely on Scott Carson we would be extremely desperate. It is a joke that he was drafted in, when he has not even been Albion’s first choice for all of this season!

48) Steve Barratt. Your right and your wrong.
In 1973 v N.Ireland, Alf Ramsey played the most lethal centre forward of the day, John Richards, on the right wing. Ironically Ramsey’s team of that time was nicknamed the wingless wonders.
Richards was not the last Wolves player to win an England cap before Bully, it was Emlyn Hughes who won three caps in 1980. Sorry.

You mention the Villa game in your last paragraph. You were there?
I was.
You say that Berra is useless and that Henry made two tackles and then went missing, so I’m presuming you are referring to their performances in that game.
Says it all really.
I suggest you take somebody with you who understands the game and can help you through it.
The Flying Winger – The table doesnt lie at the end of the season, when every team has played against each other twice. So far this season, we have seen Chelsea make a rampant start to the season looking favorites to regain the title, talk of Blackpool qualifying for Europe, Talk of Liverpool getting relegated. Thats 3 lies the table has already made.
Firstly – WELL DONE MATT! That 21 and a bit minutes were great and as he was about to come on, I felt like a proud dad…..! He looked at total ease on the pitch and if anything looked more nervous when you saw a shot of him sitting on the bench. Anyway, am hoping and praying this is the start of things to come and lets you see Matt and the rest of our boys destroy the Toon on Saturday.
44 – not really!!
Hope to make the Fulham home match and hope even more that we will be – if not almost safe by then. I KNOW we can do it.
Oh and by the way, no-one has mentioned Sunderland in the dogfight at the bottom. despite the fact that they have 38 points already, I fear for them with their run of form. Exactly the same thing happened last year, although they did survive.
WE ARE WOLVES!!!

Good performance from Matt Jarvis in one of the best games i’ve seen England play for ages.
I jumped off the sofa when he came on, which was probably a bit over the top but a Wolves player on for England doesn’t happen everyday.
Would love it if Fabio stuck with this team – even if the ‘golden generation’ have more skill and experience this lot were loads more fun to watch, looked like they enjoyed it and wanted to be there.
Taxi for Mr Terry and Mr Lampard…

52) Quite right, Mick will keep etc.
The table doesn’t lie is a hackneyed old cliche and some people ought to know better.
The table DOES lie many times during the season for all the reasons you highlight…. and more….. and especially this one.
There again when flying winger says Berra was useless against the Villa most people ignore him anyway.
55,51, If you care to take time to read my post the comment about Berra was nothing to do with the villa game, he has underperformed all season but has kept his place, I have seen him countless times miss the ball down the centre of the field, which has led to goals or opportunities of goals being scored against us, his positional play in the centre of the defence is non exsistant.
Whilst your points about the table changing has some merit, my comment relates to us being in that position most of the season and the reason is McCarthy, who insists with this insane 1 up front and our two best strikers on the bench.
With comment about Villa, it was McCarthy who dropped the team back defensive again from the 60th min, nearly losing the game again.
Until he is sacked we will continue to try the same week in week out.
My only desire as all Wolves fans is to see the team do well and stay in the Premier League.
Whether I am ignored or not at least I have an opinion on our performances.

You made a definative statement.
“Berra is useless”
Are you now saying “but not in the Villa game where he was immense ” ?

The Flying Winger – It wouldnt matter if we were bottom all season, as long as we survive on the final day. If we continue our good form of recent weeks, we could easily finnish the season mid table, which would be a fantastic position to finnish in. Manchester United have been first almost all season, but it will mean absolutely nothing if Arsenal end up overtaking them and win the league. West Brom have been outside the relegation zone nearly all season, yet they could just as easily be relegated.
I could understand your comments if we had been playing poor all season. I could also understand if we had been dead and buried all season, yet we have been on the verge of a survival place all season. Maybe the reason we have been bottom is because of our fixtures? Having to play all the big teams in a row has no doubt prevented us putting in a run of form and getting out the relegation zone. Remember that our rivals still have to play against a few of the buig teams, and theres a good chance they wont pick up anything from them, which basically means we have at least 3 potential games in hand over most our rivals. It would seem your oppinion is disregarding these simple facts and just basing it on the present table, which isnt going to finnsih the same.

56. The flying Baggie.
Our record is far better playing 4-5-1 and when we attack its more 4-4-1-1 as O’Hara is the advanced midfielder. I would probably start with Fletcher on Saturday and revert to 4-4-2 with possibly Milijas making way for SEB if we can win the game or Henry if we are chasing an equaliser.
I don’t agree with all Mick’s decisions, especially giving Ward a run-out every game but he hasn’t yet completed five seasons, he started out with 12 pro’s on our books most of which were youth teamers and we had 17 internationals on duty this week not including the injured Guedoiura, Hunt, Edwards, Zubar etc, He is taking our great club in the right direction, we our nearing the of a second season in the prem and have a great chance of a third.
Who would you suggest take his place? Mc Claren? O’Neil? Di Matteo? Ian Dowie? A ridiculous post.
