Graham Taylor tells Jarvis to kick on
Wednesday 30th March 2011, 9:59AM BST.
Former England boss Graham Taylor has warned new cap Matt Jarvis he ‘hasn’t made it yet.’
Taylor – the last man to award an England cap to a Wolves player when he gave Steve Bull the last of his 13 appearances for the country in October 1990 – insisted Jarvis did all he could on his 21 minute debut as a substitute in last night’s 1-1 draw with Ghana at Wembley.
But the former England, Wolves and Villa boss stressed the hard work has only just begun for Jarvis if he wants to add to his solitary cap.
Taylor said: “I would tell him ‘you have done something that many footballers won’t do, but you haven’t made it yet.’ That’s the most important thing to remember.
“He played for his country – he was deemed good enough to play for England. Well done son, congratulations!
“I know he’s had some setbacks in his career, with being released from Millwall. But he got picked up by Gillingham, got bought by Wolves and now he’s playing in the Premier League and playing for England.
“Now move on again.”
But Taylor believes the 24-year-old winger did all he could and didn’t let anyone down.
He said: “I think when you come on late in a game, it’s very hard to do something extra special.
“It’s very rare at international level that you see someone come on and be a dominant force in it.
“What he did was all you could have expected him to do, but he handled the situation very well.
“Whatever happens in the future, what you can never take away from him is last night – for his parents, everyone.”
Taylor stressed Jarvis’ international future rested entirely on his ability to perform consistently well for Wolves.
He said: “A lot will depend on his club form. He must always remember that he got into this position by his form for Wolves, and if he loses that, you can soon lose that international place. He must keep doing it for his club, so that people are talking about him all the time.
“You might only play 10 games a season with England, but you might play 50 for your club. So he needs to keep playing well for Wolves.
“Having been an international manager myself, you only have those 10 games, so the rest of the time, you’re going around watching players at club level.
“If they’re not playing well at club level, and they haven’t really starred at international level, you start to question them.”
