Jarvis urged to take England chance
Tuesday 29th March 2011, 11:37AM BST.
Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has been challenged to make the most of his chance if he gets to play for England in the Wembley friendly against Ghana.
Jarvis has missed out on a start for the first meeting between the countries tonight after boss Fabio Capello revealed much of his team at yesterday’s press conference, leaving out the Wolves star’s name.
But the uncapped 24-year-old may get an opportunity coming off the bench, especially with Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon having joined the five senior players sent home to have treatment on a hamstring injury.
And new captain Gareth Barry believes the door is open for players such as Jarvis to make their mark.
The former Villa midfielder said: “Now, with the experienced players going home, it’s an opportunity for the players who probably might not otherwise have had a game to get experience at this level.
“I’m not sure what formation we’ll be playing, but we’ve got players in the dressing room champing at the bit to show what they can do at Wembley in front of their home fans.
“It’s a great opportunity.”
Capello confirmed his two central defenders will be Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka, Leighton Baines will be left-back and that Jack Wilshere will play in a three-man midfield, with Barry and Andy Carroll will play up front.
Back at Molineux, Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey insisted the club were happy for Jarvis to play despite the risk of injury, after striker Kevin Doyle was ruled out for four to eight weeks with a medial ligament tear in his left knee.
Moxey said: “It’s great to be called up for your country and we hope Matt plays, scores and helps England beat Ghana.
“It’s a mixed blessing – clearly it’s great to be called up for your country. But we’re just not very happy when they come back injured.
“It’s great for them. Matt is thrilled and we’re thrilled for him and hope he does play.”
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is thought to be understanding about the loss of Doyle.
Moxey said: “He’s philosophical about it – we live with international football.
“It’s a mixed blessing – everyone wants to play for their country.”
Moxey admitted he feared the worst when he saw Doyle slump to the ground in agony.
He said: “I saw him go down and to see him signal that he was finished for the night filled everyone with dread.”

You could say that if Matt does well tonight, he will “Ghana” a lot of plaudits.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is why I get the big bucks.
