Mick McCarthy’s belief in supporters
Monday 28th March 2011, 4:00PM BST.
Mick McCarthy has revealed his belief that he has won over the majority of Wolves fans.
McCarthy is approaching his fifth anniversary in the Molineux hot-seat which has already made him the longest-serving Wolves manager since Graham Turner was sacked 17 years ago.
The 52-year-old still gets some criticism on message boards, but his record, most of his signings and his team’s work ethic ensure his future is assured at Wolves, regardless of whether the club stays in the Premier League this season.
And McCarthy, who has ‘outlived’ predecessors Graham Taylor, Mark McGhee, Colin Lee and Dave Jones and is three years behind Turner in the job, is aware of his detractors.
He said: “There were a few rumblings early on about me, like ‘he’s taken them as far as he can,’ and all that rubbish.
“There probably still is a bit somewhere but I don’t listen to it and I don’t read message-boards and get involved in all that. I’m not saying everybody feels that way because you never get everybody.
“But I think that’s a small percentage and the biggest percentage is happy with the way the club is run from top to bottom and recognise it’s a very stable, consistent club and there’s a good spirit throughout.
“It’s about belief, understanding, and knowing we’ve got good players.”
McCarthy, who became the first man since Turner in 1989 to bring a title to Wolves when he won the Championship 20 years later, believes the core support has been embraced through the club.
He said: “It always appears that the support is all one way, from Steve Morgan to Jez Moxey to me and the players. But it’s a thread through the club.
“What about me back to the board? And the players to me? And the fans to the players?”
McCarthy retains total belief in his ability to manage successfully.
He said: “I know we’ve been bottom of the league, but that cannot turn me into a bad manager.
“It was easy to say ‘he’s rubbish’ when we were bottom. But managers who’ve had success don’t just lose their ability.
“They might not be a good ‘fit’ at a club or they might have bad luck with injuries.
“The worst is to try to point all those things out because people think you’re making excuses – so I don’t!”
