Matt Jarvis inspires Wolves’ hopefuls

Wolves’ England hopefuls has insisted Matt Jarvis’ call-up inspires them to do the same.

Jarvis is in the squad for tomorrow’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at the Millennium Stadium, hoping to become the first Wolves player since Steve Bull in October 1990 to pull on the Three Lions shirt.

Unlike Jarvis, Wolves team-mates Michael Kightly and Adam Hammill  have already represented England at under-21 and youth and schoolboy level respectively.

And they believe if they continue with their progress, they could one day follow in Jarvis’ footsteps.

Kightly said: “I’m only thinking of playing again, but I think it gives everyone at the club hope.

“Karl Henry has been touted for England this season and he’s been different class over the last couple of years. So it’s opened up people’s eyes to say that there are players at Wolverhampton good enough to play for England.

“Jarvo has said it’s everyone’s dream to play for your country and it is mine, but he has been different class for two years and unfortunately, I’ve been injured. I’m really pleased he’s got the call-up and if he plays, he’ll do well.

“Hopefully, one day, if I can get the form back that I showed when I was playing, then you never know.”

Hammill believes Jarvis’ call-up can act as a spur to him and others.

He said: “I’d like to congratulate ‘Jarvo’ on what he’s done. I think he’s done terrifically well to get the call-up and I hope he gets some playing time to prove what he can do.

“But it also gives someone like me a spur because it means the England staff are watching our games and there’s always a chance that any of us can impress.

“There aren’t many out-and-out wingers any more but Jarvo and me are definitely out-and-out wingers who like to take men on, get to the byeline which is good for Wolves.

“You can throw in Michael Kightly and Stephen Hunt as well as players who all like to get at defenders too. So it’s good for us and it’s something I want to emulate to the maximum.

“I can also watch ‘Jarvo’ in the matches to see what he does in the games.”
