Ex-Wolves wingers back Matt Jarvis
Friday 25th March 2011, 3:00PM GMT.
Two past Wolves wingers of international experience believe Matt Jarvis has the high work-rate to succeed with England.
Jarvis will become the first Wolves player since Steve Bull in October 1990 to win an England cap if he plays a part in tomorrow’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.
No Molineux winger has been capped by the Three Lions since Alan Hinton in 1962-63.
But for all the pinpoint crossing of wing great Dave Wagstaffe, the bludgeon-like goalscoring of Johnny Hancocks and Terry Wharton, the sheer pace of Tony Daley and Steve Froggatt and the ability to glide past opponents like Robbie Dennison, Jarvis’ workrate is up there with the best of them.
Daley, who won seven England caps from 1991-92 and is now fitness coach at Molineux, and Dennison, who covers every Wolves game for local radio, are two men well placed to judge.
Former Villa flyer Daley said: “I’d heard a lot about ‘Jarvo’ before I joined the club but what struck me was his work ethic.
“He can be a quiet lad but when you ask him to do something, it’s done. That’s held him in good stead.
“He’s gifted with natural pace but I can honestly say I don’t know anybody quicker from a standing start.
“What he adds to his game is his workrate. Jarvo is the modern winger. He can do stuff people want to see, but also with the tracking back and the workrate.
“We can see what he contributes going forward but, even if he isn’t having any joy, he will always track back and do his bit.
“He’s always willing to work on his set-pieces with assistant manager Terry Connor and the gaffer
“He’s very good at those so his all-round game is improving.”
Daley believes the 24-year-old is a model professional.
He said: “Matt’s an excellent professional and thoroughly deserves what he’s enjoying at the moment.
“It’s a great pleasure to work with Jarvo in the gym or on the field doing extra work on speed or agility.
“He’s very diligent working on the things to prevent injury.”
Dennison, who won 18 caps for Northern Ireland during his 350 games for Wolves spanning a decade from 1987, also reckons Jarvis’ work ethic has seen him excel.
He said: “Jarvis has been very consistent this season, which gets you noticed. He’s improved so much over the last couple of years and that’s secured this call-up, which he fully deserves.
“That improvement comes from a lot of hard work which Matt has clearly been putting in. He’s worked very hard and what’s particularly improved is his end product.
“He’s also starting to chip in with a few goals.”
