Christophe Berra relishing Brazil test
Wednesday 23rd March 2011, 3:00PM GMT.
Wolves defender Christophe Berra is relishing the prospect of facing Brazil stars Kaka and Robinho this weekend – so he can test himself against the best.
The Scotland international joins battle-scarred Albion midfielder James Morrison and Villa’s Barry Bannan in Craig Levein’s squad for Sunday’s glamour friendly against the Samba favourites at the Emirates Stadium.
And the 26-year-old is eager to compare the silky-skilled Brazilians to his current No 1 – Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.
Berra said: “There have been so many good players I’ve faced but I would say Dimitar Berbatov is as good as any.
“I know he didn’t play particularly well against us when we beat them at Molineux, but he’s got everything. People don’t think he’s not fast but he is, and when he gets the ball, it’s so hard to get it off him.
“His touch is so good it’s unbelievable and he’s very strong as well. I’m sure Kaka and Robinho will compare well with him, although Robinho didn’t play for Manchester City when we played them last season.
“We play against international quality strikers every week, so it can only be good for me as an individual to have this sort of experience.
“I’m only 26 and I’m improving all the time – I want to carry on learning and improving my game and playing in games like Brazil is only going to help me.”
While Berra is quick to acknowledge Scotland are expected to be mere fodder for the Brazilians, the former Hearts man believes the Tartan Army squad is on the up and have players to cause the Latin Americans problems.
He said: “We’ve got good footballers, especially in midfield and up front, so hopefully we can step it up for that game and put in a good performance against Brazil.
“Lads such as Charlie Adam and Barry Bannan will love it and there’s no better arena to do it on than that pitch.
“It’s not just Kaka and Robinho – I’m sure they will have a lot of players who we haven’t even heard of who will one day get a move over here and light the place up.
“We’re not kidding ourselves – it’s going to be a difficult game because they’re a better team than us with better individuals, but we want to continue our progress.
“We beat Northern Ireland 3-0 and played very well, creating a lot of chances and showed a lot of quality.
“The future looks bright – we have got a young squad but we are all of a similar age and hopefully we can all gel together.
“We have a lot of players who play regularly in the Premier League, so we have got good experience.”
Berra believes Arsenal’s gleaming home is the ideal footballing backdrop for such a fixture.
He said: “It’s the best pitch in the Premier League by far this season and it’s always like that – you never see it run down. It’s a beautiful, modern stadium and it’s a great arena to play in.
“As long as we put a good performance in, we’ll be happy because you only enjoy matches if you’re winning and playing well.”
Berra believes that, despite having to travel some 315 miles south of the border, there will be no shortage of backing for the Scots in north London.
He said: “I think I read a week or so ago that over 20,000 tickets had been sold. It won’t just be Scots there, either, because London has a bigger population than all of Scotland anyway.
“There will be a lot of Scots in London and south of the border going to the game as well as a lot of people who just want to watch a good game, especially as it’s Brazil.
“It’s not very often fans get to watch Brazil, so hopefully there will be a big crowd and it will be a good advert for football.”
