Wolves boss hails Jarvis’ England call
Tuesday 22nd March 2011, 2:00PM GMT.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has insisted Matt Jarvis will remain unfazed by the England set-up and is ready to become an international star.
Jarvis linked up with Fabio Capello’s 26-man squad for the first time last night in preparation for Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
Despite joining some of the world’s biggest names – including John Terry and Wayne Rooney – McCarthy backed his winger to remain the same down-to-earth player.
He said: “Matt has a belief in his ability and he’s caused problems to every full-back he’s played against. You don’t have to act any differently to play for England.
“And you don’t have to be arrogant, brash, over-bearing or obnoxious to be a good footballer. You just remain the same in that company and I’m sure he will.
“Actually, I hope he gets better by being with England. His personality will remain the same, I don’t doubt that.
“He’s that sort of character who wants to improve.”
McCarthy is convinced his Player of the Year-elect will only get better from the experience.
He said: “Being there will improve him. I hope it has a positive effect on him straight away. I know it will because I remember how I was when I first joined an international squad.
“I was suddenly training with Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton and Mark Lawrenson and I felt better about myself.”
McCarthy acknowledged Jarvis’ selection could open the door for other Wolves players.
Captain Karl Henry was named in the provisional squad for the recent friendly against Denmark.
The Wolves boss said: “I don’t think any of our lads can try any harder or put any more effort in.
“They train as hard as they can and all they can do is play to the best of their ability and hope they get recognised.”
