Villa’s plight shows spirit at Wolves
Tuesday 22nd March 2011, 9:40AM GMT.
Wolves columnist John Lalley believes the plummeting fortunes of the Villa side they beat away from home on Saturday is in stark contrast to life at Molineux.
At times during this season, I’ve wondered whether Wolves as a club has been guilty of overstating its case with the constant insistence that team spirit and solidarity of purpose remains sky high, regardless of our placing in the league.
You know, just a bit too much of the self-appreciation and giving themselves the highest possible marks for their own appraisal of their performance.
Anyway, given the vastness of their salaries, the least any group of players should deliver is a collective sense of purpose for the common good of the club.
Manager Mick McCarthy and chief executive Jez Moxey have not spurned a single opportunity to beat the harmony drum and occasionally it has been tempting to translate this testimony of togetherness as a front to cover for our inadequacies.
But events at the Villa last weekend sharply put into focus that maybe there is more to the strength of the Wolves’ bonding than mere rhetoric.
Villa Park was angry, dysfunctional and disunited before, during and after the game as the increasingly inevitable Wolves triumph inexorably took its course.
The whole place was spoiling for a family row, a bust-up of civilian war proportions, intent on a voluble display of seething discontent.
Badly let down by the boozy ramblings of two senior professionals who risibly chose a so-called residential bonding trip to ignite festering disharmony, Villa, their management, their players and their supporters obligingly imploded leaving Wolves as the delighted and grateful benefactors.
The ‘Had Enough – Houllier Out’ Holte End banner augured well for Wolves before kick-off and so too did the appearance of the Villa manager on the touchline.
Decked out for deliberate ostentation attired in a Villa scarf a la Mancini, Houllier transmitted the distinct vibes of a desperate man vainly trying to ingratiate himself into the affections of a group of belligerently unconvinced supporters smouldering with resentment.
His claret and blue snood hadn’t been on show at Anfield earlier this season when Houllier played to the gallery on his return to Liverpool, when he was happy to take an extended curtain call in front of the Kop and ignore the travelling Villa fans.
This act of self-indulgence and the show of disdain for the supporters of the club currently paying his wages has clearly not been forgiven or forgotten.
The FA Cup fiasco at Manchester City has done little for his credibility either and, although he is by no stretch of the imagination the first Premier League manager to show disdain for the competition, at present a large proportion of simmering Villa fans are hardly likely to give the Frenchman the remotest benefit of the doubt.
In contrast, our manager can irritably refer to Wolves fans as ‘a bunch of numpties’ with impunity when we get on his nerves.
McCarthy doesn’t give one of his famous ‘flying flutes’ when we lapse into grumbling mode but, soon enough, the tetchiness runs its course, equilibrium is restored with the boss happily acknowledging ‘Super Mick’ chants and telling assembled media outlets that ‘Our fans have been brilliant.’
Uniquely for a manager flirting with relegation, McCarthy can openly tell the world that he carries on in post next season regardless of the club’s league status.
Houllier and just about every other manager in the country can only observe such job security with a mixture of envy and amazement.
At the final whistle, when Houllier took the walk of shame from dug-out to tunnel, the crescendo of vitriolic abuse from the home fans matched the intensity of the ecstatic delight oozing from the Wolves supporters.
Hands in pockets, head bowed and mute as a mackerel, the Villa boss was a broken picture of bewildered confusion and abject dejection.
Football does not do sympathy and there was none from either end of the stadium. When he finally set foot in the Villa dressing room and locked the door, the atmosphere must have been threateningly claustrophobic.
I wonder what his players made of his post-match de-brief? Intelligent, multi-lingual, architect of the hugely successful French Academy and multi cup winner on Merseyside and at present it counts for as little as one of McCarthy’s flying flutes. And what’s more, Monsieur Houllier knows it.
The following day, Jez Moxey happily informed the national media that Matt Jarvis had heard of his England selection whilst at home dutifully drying the dishes after washing up.
This all sounds very mundane but it is quite deliberately expressed to stress the lack of presumption and hubris running through the very core of Molineux, even amongst its potential England stars.
Jarvis, like the rest of the squad epitomises the straight, honest and hard working type of individual that the club seeks to project and has proudly invested its future in.
Like motherhood and apple pie, you can’t dissent about it. I still remain absolutely convinced that there must be a rogue hidden somewhere at Molineux but, whoever he might be, Jez is keeping it quiet!
Demonstrably, no team can survive in this league simply on the strength of an abundance of spirit and solidarity.
Quality will prevail and clearly many teams have bucketfuls more class than we possess at Molineux but, just the same, no player donning a gold shirt this season can in any way be reproached for lacking commitment to the overall cause.
The likes of Stephen Ward, George Elokobi and others will always have their critics insisting that they simply do not have the capabilities necessary to function effectively at this level.
This is a subjective exercise open to rigorous debate but no rational supporter of this club can reasonably question the desire, courage and professionalism of the squad.
When the season ends, these attributes may prove insufficient for us to retain our status and, if the worst occurs, we can offer no hard luck stories or pleas in mitigation – the failure will have been ours and ours alone.
But this abundance of spirit and determination displayed in recent matches indicates that Wolves really do have the resistance to beat the drop.
Villa have the players to reverse their downward spiral and the likelihood is that they will but for the present, the evidence of exactly what McCarthy and Moxey have been espousing all season was on display at Villa Park and very encouraging it was too.

Slightly off-topic, but I thought I’d just share this in the light of the Jamie O’Hara ’43 points’ prediction.

At the end of the day our star player from Sunday thinks that 38 points is enough. 42 points no way.

Number 1: U know nothin. Of course 38 points will keep us up with these atrocious teams at the bottom who’ve virtually all got to play at least 3 or 4 games against the likes of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool.

Nuts, yes it will. Probably less. You and gamblino make the mistake that other teams win their games. They dont.

Pete – last season we finished 15th with 38 points and 31 would have kept us up. Only 1 team has been relegated in that last 7 years with 38 points. So here’s a tip for you – if you’re typing rubbish don’t have a go at those who correct you.

Great article. It shows the spirit of the club. It shows why my dad was proud to be a Wolves fan, why I am proud to be a wolves fan and best of all, for the future it shows why my kids are so proud to be Wolves fans.

So in summary we are a well run club where the majority of people get on,are hard working,Mick’s job is safe and we are expected to stay up…..just.
Keep the faith 43 points as Doyle said yesterday and we will be fine. 3 points at Birmingham,Albion home and Newcastle away!! you heard it here first!!

Pete Nuts You Are Ledge!! Love It
O’Hara Even Said 43 Points BEFORE The Blackburn Game, So It Could Be 44 points Or 46 Points
38 Points They Are Mad!!
Only 5 Points Off Ay Lads Haha

1) Jamie O’Hara is putting that down as a target. He too has said that 38 points could be enough as well. Due to others fixture lists, 38 points still could be good enough and that is a fact. Go on the BBC football site and there is a predictor and you will see what I mean. Have you got nothing better to do?
Anyway in terms of who is going down it’s a very hard call. Albion are showing some fight but still have some bad fixtures left. I cannot see Wigan getting much more and then I am going on two out of the following three – West Brom, Blackburn and Blackpool. The team that Wolves currently have on show and players like Craddock, Hunt, Fletcher, Kites and SEB being on the bench, all bodes well. Time will tell!

@6 BRW
“Have you got nothing better to do?”
I can’t actually think of anything that could possibly be better than the above, mate!

Superb, wonderful article, John – your best ever and all so spot on. I don’t know if we’ll stay up but I do know that I’m proud to have been a lifelong fan of this great club, which is more than those Villa fans can say about theirs.
Come on me babbies, we can do it – together.

I think we’re all agreed that Wolves players always give 100% effort, courage and conviction. That cannot be questioned, so fair play to Mick and Co for instilling professionalism.
As for the Vile, who cares tuppence about their plight? A good spell in the Championship might do that egotistical club the world of good. In fact, their fans remind me very much of Wolves situation, many years ago.
For example, following their defeat to the mighty Wolves last weekend, a Villa fan being interviewed by Radio WM outside the ground screamed:
“We’re a massive club! We don’t deserve to be where we are!” (quote)
On the contrary old pal, YES YOU DO.
If you go down, you’ll have earned that, too. Time for reality to sink in at Villa Park or they’re doomed, much like the 1975 Wolves team were hailed as “Too good to go own”. But we did.
Thankfully, once we cast aside our spendthrift, ‘Big Time Charlies’reputation in the Championship, our club began to finally thrive. Over at Villa Park, they’re in chaos and, worse still, in denial about their situation -at least it looks that way.
So, Wolves have finally learned their lesson and the fans finally see a committed bunch of guys that wear the shirt with pride. It’s all we ever asked, but took a long time to realise.
Villa, it would be sad to see any of our four West Midlands clubs go down but, if I had to choose one, you’d be the fall guys. A little humility might go a long way to curing your over-inflated sense of importance.
Just ask the Wolves fans.

Anybody know where stand on yellow cards? It would be a real pity if we lost a player on that front and I think emotions are going to get severely tested during the run in.

PeteNuts you are pathetic asking if he’s got anything better to do when you’ve played cut and paste to get your point over…

There’s one thing about this article that I find very confusing……
Surely Jarvis should be able to afford the luxury of a dishwasher?!
This article is spot on.
Jamie O’Hara was quick in the paper yesterday to dicuss the spirit in the squad and believes this club is going places.
Matt Jarvis was quick to praise Mick and Terry Connor for the work that they have doen to help his game.
First fifteen games this season:
Won 3 Drew 3 Lost 9 Points 12
Last fifteen games:
Won 6 Drew 2 Lost 7 Points 20
I think it is time to start dreaming the future is bright the future is golden!

@11 Pathetic
I didn’t ask him if he had anything better to do, I was quoting him.
And as for your assertion that an opinion can never be right or wrong – it is my opinion that the sun will go down this evening, and come up again tomorrow. Am I not right in this opinion, based as it is on overwhelming evidence? Pray silence, sir, and let PeteNuts enjoy his moment!
I had a look at the disciplinary rules and our record on the club site. At this stage of the season you get a ban after 10 yellow cards. Stearman looks to be the closest to a ban on 6 so barring any return of “dirty wolves” we should be ok.
11) Yes John has written a good article and most definitely Villa and Blues are in the relegation mire. As you will see from my final paragraph, the points issue is totally irrelevant as I reckon with some of our long term injured nearly back in the frame, the team and squad are good enough. O’Hara and Hammill class January acquisitions!
Lots of unrest at Villa and Albion but our club have unity and spirit. Blues have done well to win the League Cup but they are struggling badly.
As somebody else mentioned players like Fletcher, Hunt, Kightly, SEB, Craddock, Mancienne on the bench our season is just starting as we have had terrible injury problems all season but if we stay up and beat the Albion at home it will be a season to remember anyway and a great way to say good-bye to the 2nd best stand at the Mol!!!
WE ARE WOLVES.

9 – Ye Olde South Bank…my sentiments exactly.
14 – PeteNuts…the bit about “the sun will go down this evening, and come up again tomorrow” is FACT, not an opinion.
In your previous posts you stated your opinion which was neither right nor wrong, as did brummierobwolves.

Nice collection – it must be nice to have the time, mind you if I didn’t actually go to games I guess I would have more time too. You may well be proved right (I’m sure you’ll let us know) but maybe you should wait to gloat until the end of the season. The bottom 8 teams are basically averaging 1 point a game. Some will do better over the last 8 games and end up with 40+, but some will do worse – are you sure there aren’t more than 3 that will gain 5 points or fewer?

@19 Noisy
When you know you’re going to be proved right, Noisy, you can MAKE time.
I think that in terms of winding you boys up, this will go down as my magnum opus…
Report abuse
19) Spot on and I do actually go to all the games. I reckon there could be a shock side to go down eg Blackburn, Villa or Blues. I think one side will just have a horrid last 8 series of results – Wigan probably? As I said Albion are getting some surprises but are not able to keep a clean sheet. Do not want to get cocky but Wolves always had the kindest fixture list at the death and we are only bottom three by ony 1 goal scored extra by West Ham. I believe that West Ham will be ok!
Lads, it’s really wonderful for you that you get to go to all the games, but sadly, my inability to leap 180 miles in a single bound every weekend means that I am destined to miss out. However, this is not a debate based around my ability to hypothesise on Stearman’s susceptibility on the turn or the pretty colours in Matt Jarvis’ boots. It’s simple mathematic probability, as I have been telling you all until I am blue in my handsome face for a month or more. There is no way – NO WAY – that those figures you clung to so gamely, like shipwrecked sailors on the storm-tossed sea, are going to keep us up. And I am greatly enjoying being proved correctimundo. Pop into the Newhampton sometime, I gather Mad O’Rourke’s have developed a new flavour – Humble Pie…

38 points is still within reasonable reach of any of the bottom eight. No one has got tailed off or given up …yet, and while there might be signs of slippage you couldn’t really say that any team is a definite relegation candidate. The real problem is probably going to be putting enough daylight between third from bottom and fourth bottom, and I can’t see 38 points doing the trick there.
As the flying flute has said we just need to be above three clubs come 5.00 pm on 22 May. Course he’s right.
Sorry John, you were saying about Villa,
Report abuse
PeteNuts and co, you have cofused me! not too difficult to do, but this “38 or 43 points” to stay up, does’nt really matter.
I look at it this way– The current bottom team (Wigan) have 30 points and 8 games left so if they win those 8 they will achieve 54 pts. This is the relegation line. Looking at the league, I think this makes the top three safe, any of the other 17 teams could go down. After the next round of games this target will shift if Wigan fail to win, and more teams will become safe. So, how many points we require will shift week to week, at the moment we need 55 pts to be safe. Now THAT is fact, not speculation, not an opinion, but FACT. After the Newcastle game we will see how many points we need then. Stick with me lads!! All will be revealed!
C’mon me Babbies!!

Can’t disagree with the observations made in the article about the situation at the Wolves and Villa clubs. If I were a Villa supporter, I would not be that confident of survival at the moment.
By contrast, in recent weeks Wolves have pulled off some great results which have raised expectations amongst most supporters, of seeing Premiership football next season.
We seem to be the form team (along with WestHam) in the lower half of the table. With only 3 points seperating us with Blackburn, there is no reason why we cannot finish higher than we did last season.

Young Peter, whilst I am in complete agreement with your good self, Mr O’Hara and many, many other commentators who believe that 38 points will be insufficent to avoid relegation this season (for what it’s worth, I believe that it will be between the 41-43 point mark), may I remind you of one of your earlier predictions this season… Albion 1 Wolves 6.
I only refer to this as, in an act of huge faith in your powers of prediction, I literally bet my house on this specific scoreline and shortly afterward was forced to file for ‘super duper’ bankruptcy and move back into my parent’s garden shed where I now exist on a diet of beans, rice and reality television.

I have read many, many ALOB articles over the years where fans have called for good honest endeavour, hard work and commitment to the club, over big time charlies with inflated ego’s and wage packets who arn’t as good as they think they are.. (Steve Bull excepted, of course – he was the bench mark for what we wanted to see. It was some of his team mates that let us down)
Now we have that in spades and yet we see a small but vocal section of Wolves fandom CRITISIZING Wolves playes (even though they epitomize the above) because of a perceived lack of raw talent.. My guess is that they must be pretty new to being Wolves supporters, have a massive memory problem, or simply didn’t bother turning up much for the last 30 years!!
Mich has brought in the sort of players I want to see playing for my football club AND I think they are good enough to stay up AND kick on in the future.
PeteNuts, I think the target of 43 with a game to play is just something to aim for – a. so that we can relax on the last day of the season and b. because you have to aim high in order to achieve what you actually need. I reacon 40/41 points ought to do it, but I don’t know that and no one else (even including you!!) knows either ;-)

Like somebody has said on a previous thread, the difference in togetherness on Saturday between Wolves players and Villa players when play stopped for the lino to be replaced must have been embarrassing for the Villa faithfull.
If Wolves can match that spirit with points we shall be okay.
Points ? It’s a moving feast. I agree with 27 and 32. Who can possibly tell in this extraordinary season what is safe. I would have thought 43 with a game to play would be okay, but, that’s just mine and Jamie O’Hara’s opinion.

John – in the words of Mick I don’t think any Wolves fan “gives a flying flute” in what’s going on up at the Villa. Do you really think they & their fans are thinking about us. No way. We have to maintain our focus and make sure we out point at least 3 other teams to avoid the drop.
TBH I think over the last few games we have left the “hoof” ball behind & played some decent stuff. I consider us to be one of the best of the rest & should we keep this momentum going we will be good. We won’t win every game left (but wouldn’t it be nice if we did to confound the EPL) but we should have enough in the tank to do it.
I really believe we will be so much better next season. O’Hara & Hammill have both proved to be good additions in Jan. I really want Jamie at this club he has lifted the whole team since his arrival, we need him on board next season. I was hoping Richard Dunne might be approached but it looks like Man Utd & Liverpool are going after him.
Lets keep it simple but effective & let Villa, Blackburn & all the others worry about their own demise.
